this is so interesting! i was just accepted into amherst, but because of covid-19 we aren’t allowed to visit before committing. thank you for providing this perspective on the daily life of an amherst student!
hey! i don't know what exactly is needed to get in, but i believe that my essays were a large part of my acceptance. i think this goes for all colleges but they want to get to know who you are as a person. i wrote about how i had grown in a certain area as well as a skill that i have developed etc. hope this helps!
I honestly thought that the premed courses at Amherst were pretty well balanced. The professors are willing to help and are understanding of different circumstances. However, if you want to take upper division classes for biology I highly recommend you double major or major in biochem or biology since priority are given to majors. If you don't want to major it is possible to take premed courses at UMass Amherst depending on your schedule but that is also difficult because priority is given to UMass Amherst students. I have seen a handful of people, myself included, take biochemistry at UMass Amherst and it was manageable with my schedule. Let me know if you have anymore questions :)
Amherst looks so lovely, and I really enjoyed the side comments! I actually just got accepted this year, do you possibly have any advice for any lowly incoming newbies to Amherst? :^)
Congratulations!! One advice I would want to give is to choose a freshman seminar that you would enjoy taking. The seminars are a lot of work, but if you enjoy the topic it alleviates some of the stress. I hope to see you around campus next year!
Hey sorry for the late reply! Personally, as a poc I usually do not feel any sort of discrimination and since most of my friends are also pocs it makes me feel more at home. However, there have been some personal experiences where I have felt that I was at a disadvantage and felt frustrated. There are times when insensitive comments are made by fellow peers, but generally I have not experienced anything on a day to day basis. I do not know how my experience compares to other universities or colleges, but that has been my experience at amherst so far.
