    Easy. Count the least common multiple of 3 and 4 which is 12. The left hand hit on 1,5,9, right hand hit on 1,4,7,10

    Well, I guess the idea of verbalizing the patttern is cool. I dont know if Mike Johnston is really inspired by Benny Greb or not (in that case it should be cool too, since maybe Benny is his big inspiration, dont know for sure lol) but he has kinda the same idea about verbalizing :d. U can watch Benny on Drumeo, there's a part which he did do the football clave by hands while saying 4/4 signature out loud, which is then quite difficult to master.
    About this polyrhythm, I find it very useful to practice modern dance such as samba, techno disco...

    • @NguyenThang-yc9py
      @NguyenThang-yc9py 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still got lost with that Benny's concept haha. Even this polyrhythm, for me it's doable but back in the past, I struggled at this since I just practiced on my own with no method or verbalized lines or something like that :D.

    This explanation makes the difficult topic of polyrhythm a simple matter. It is wonderful! I suppose that Bossa Nova, the most famous Brazilian rhythm, must be played as a polyrhythm. May I suggest that you make a video about Bossa Nova? I would love to see you perform a Bossa Nova song.

    • @rosslmccallum

      Nice work! If the whole band plays something like this together then maybe intro or outro or bridge works!

  • @jeffd.3883
    @jeffd.3883 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ross I had a question, why can't you just keep your right hand where the bass is and your left hand where snare is? I play like this and it seems fine am I missing something? Maybe some of the super fast double bass or double snare stuff is a lot harder but besides that I don't really see a downside to playing the way I do. Thank you for reading

    • @rosslmccallum
      @rosslmccallum  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff D. Hey Jeff thanks for the great comment there’s lots of detail here for us to talk about. In my opinion, you can only get so far with a designated bass hand and a designated snare hand.
      Do you play ghost notes in grooves? It’s okay if it’s not really your style but ghost notes give that underlying flow to a groove in my opinion. So if your right hand is playing every bass note and your left hand is playing every snare note then that means sometimes you would have a large number of hits in a row with just your left hand. Even this is totally manageable I’m sure for some grooves at a reasonable tempo (not super fast).
      I’m doing a little experiment now to find some of the grooves that you might like to play in the future but would be difficult using the method you’re using now. Mostly I’m thinking of halftime grooves, triplet grooves and fills, shuffle grooves and hits like flams.
      I’ll link some videos in my next comment if that sounds okay to you.

      I'd think ghosts are still very doable with designated hands, even finger light drumming only snare, but I'm super new to this. Like, a drummer on a set had designated hands.
      Is this a common question? Thank you for reading bud :)
