That is freaking INSANE! For all those that don’t surf. I’m a 6,3 male with 2 hands and arms & ive surfed a lot in my life . I would not attempt this even with flotation devices. I didn’t see her wearing any floatation devices !!! That’s crazy !! That was a monster of a wave and it didn’t look hollow at all. It looked thick and epic. Go Bethany !

Hurt like bejesus. But, thinking of your brave example, I manned up and added more cream, cooled that bad boy down to lukewarm and slugged the rest down like a superhero.

If you push yourself you will have those moments, we all do. It's the Ocean keeping you humble, sometimes she is gentle with you and other times demands some heavy dues be paid. I almost died at 16years old in a multiple wave hold. I won't repeat the horror of it here save to say when I finally got to the shore I kissed the sand then sat there bawling my eyes out with a mouth full of sand! BEAT! No more surfing that day but in the long run it gave me an appreciation for life, it made me stronger.

Greg Loher and a couple guys came down one day and Chris Dorsey and Jimmy Chang showed up for a couple days heading down to Rio Nesba & El Faro. Nesba had five guys living there, Lazaro Cardenas had a handful of Mexican surfers. Those were the days !
I don’t know many guys (or girls) that would’ve dared to take that line, you have great instincts and truly belong out there in any condition the planet offers up. Keep charging 👍

If you mean I didn’t lose an arm, you’re correct. I left the water twice due to sharks in Poipu area. The big tiger shark was the worst experience. It was like Fannings encounter. In 1987 I surfed with George Orbelian in Hanalei Bay and gave him the dims of my 4 fin. My board is in the book “Essential Surfing” by George Orbelian on Amazon. You should buy it. Proceeds go to George’s ocean plastic cleanup boat. I don’t have to prove anything to you whoever you are.
I’m 72 and surfed all my life but smoke cigarettes and ate crappy food . At 60 my health went South, I’ve been recovering for the last 13 years. BethanyYou blow my mind, I’m not giving up, I’ll see you in the water soon! Thank you!

I think most people would have stayed away from the water after an event like that so she has a lot of courage more than most of us will probably ever know !! I know that feeling of being wiped out by a huge wave. I used to boogie board when I was 7 years old at Bellows Beach, and I was pinned to the bottom of the ocean. What saved me was that my boogie board strap was attached to my ankle. I kept praying to God that I didn’t drown. Time passed and finally I got a hold of my boogie board, and I was able to get back up to the surface. That was a scary moment. Another one was when my sister and I were swimming in North Shore beach, and we fell in this deep hole in the middle of the ocean. We had to take turns swimming to the surface, because a big wave came and took us with it. Time passed, and finally our dad saw us and he got us out of the water. We were living in Oahu for three years when my dad got stationed in Wheeler Airfield in the Army. Moving from Puerto Rico to Hawaii was a dream for me, even if I almost lost my life twice lol. Nature is beautiful, but at the same time it’s dangerous. That didn’t stop me from swimming and boogie boarding. I wanted to learn how to surf like you, but my parents didn’t let me. I will learn one day lol.
At 1:25 just look at how casually she begins that wave. She could have ridden it so much more conservatively, but no, she takes the low road to the bottom to set up a barrel. God damn this woman is hard core.
Once spent about 45 minutes in 50 degree water during a 8-12 foot nor'Easter after losing a board. Took nearly 4 miles of drift to get in. Was frozen, nearly gave up when I saw the pier coming up quickly. Backstroked to the outside of the pier, luckily. Was finally able to get in but never saw the board again.
Only happened to me once but after a hold down I couldn't make it to the top to get a quick breath because the water was so full of air I literally couldn't swim in it. Had I good fear of the bigger stuff since then
@@humzilla707 Same here, had a hold down where there wasn't enough water to swim up in, at least that's how it felt. I wounder if it's air or maybe enough of your body is being held in a downward flow but you just don't realize it?. It was dam freaky though, that's for sure.
Just had a 2 wave hold down today after a 20 foot wipeout trying to prove myself on something I obviously wasent ready for I caught one so I thought I could again will never forget the feeling
I would Never ride that wave. Lol. It's like five timed overhead about? Even head high waves are way more intense than they look on camera. This woman is a straight up legend.
Seems like an awfully hazardous environment...I've surfed big waves and there are times where you just run out of luck...hope she's being coached well. I know she surfs Jaws also but that somehow seems almost safer (easier to be cautious and pick waves). Heavy beach breaks are freaking gnarly and will just thrash you out of control.

I’m still scarred from a multi wave hold down in costa rica. Mentally I was never the same in the water.

What does it mean to be held down? As in the wave takes you to the bottom and then next waves don’t allow you to resurface?
