  • hamradioireland... Anthony Murphy EI8GHB is learning Morse Code for his two-letter callsign suffix. He uses free computer software to help. The software, Just Learn Morse Code, is free to download from the internet.

Your first lesson deals with just 2 characters. Subsequent lessons add 2 characters at a time and the most recent additions are emphasized (repeated more often) than the rest.
I found that doing just 2 characters for a few sessions and then moving on to the next 2 for a few sessions helped me make the process reflexive rather than intellectual. Then I would combine the 2-groups that had become reflexive into a bigger (n*2-groups) group and work with that until I was comfortable with it and then practice with the next 2-group and then combining that 2-group into a ((n+1)*2-groups and so on.
    Hope this helps.

@9m2pju It used to be like that in Ireland. In the old days, B licencees could only operate on VHF, but now they have access to HF as well.

I don't have a keyer yet, is there a way to use the mouse or keyboard to emulate one?

@9m2pju I passed the CW test in February 2010 and got my new callsign, EI2KC, in March of that year. Thanks!

Yes indeed. I presume you know what Morse Code is? Considered by some an outdated mode of communication, it is still widely used in military, aviation, amateur radio etc. In Ireland passing a CW (Morse) test entitles you to a two-letter suffix on your callsign. Currently I am EI8GHB but that could be shortened after CW to EI8??. I am just learning Morse at the moment. In aviation, morse identifies the VORs and ILS if selected on the pedestal. But you knew that, right??!

I searching a software we can write words or sentences with morse
(Like I using space button to use that bip bip (sry I dont know it's name) and it make it letter for me)
Or practice for morse like 20 bip per second and I will try understand it
If u know a software like this could u say me or where can I find it?

@mythicalireland ive passed my CW test and get my class A license which the prefix is 9M. everybody need to pass CW test to work on 40m, 20m, 80m here in Malaysia. Class B license only can work on 70cm, 2m and 10m.

As some others have asked, how can I program the keyboard key I want to use for input?

@WA5MUF Yes - now that I've had Morse for a number of months I'm really enjoying it. It's my favourite mode. And I've picked up a lot of DX on CW. I am now EI2KC. 73!

@mythicalireland the old Ireland's days is Malaysia's present days. The authority are planning to give 40m for the class B license. but i dont know when. i just hope that class B can work on other HF bands. Malaysia is still a rare station.

    @9m2pju I have done well with 9M2 with my small station and 100w power. I have 9M2 worked on 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m, 15m, and 12m.

@mythicalireland It's always interesting to note that those who consider CW 'outdated' have never bothered to learn it. If we were to drop all the "outmoded" methods of emission, we wouldn't be left with much.
SSB is in its 90th year, yet you don't hear many say that's outdated. Despising what you can't understand is odd, I think.
The HF bands are alive with enthusiasts of all ages working the DX with a few watts, and loving every second.
Good to hear you're enjoying the original amateur mode.

I've never understood why you are supposed to learn morse code by listening and sending just scrambled letters?
That is what have made me lose my patience with learning morse code.

Keep up the good work Anthony.
Merry Christmas to you (in morse code, hi, hi).
