What awesome quality of sending. It isn't just the quality of the key but the skill of the sender. Not telling anyone something we all hear. Beauty to the ear.
My Grandfather was a Chief Radio Operation on a sub during WWII. He is gone now, but even up until he was in his 80's, he could translate Morse Code, (not machine generated of course) just like a translator could translate the spoken word. I tried learning code years ago but couldn't get past 5 WPM. I am again trying it and learning it better than I did back when I was younger. I have a straight key, paddle and yes, in honor of my Grandfather, I found a vintage, and in very good condition a J-38 Key as well. I practice using all of them.
Look at joining the Long Island CW Club. They have all kinds of classes to learn cw and increase speed on ZOOM. It is FANTASTIC! You will not be disappointed! They even have classes to get one licensed from technician clear through extra class if desired. It is self paced so absolutely no pressure. You will not find a more supportive group of men and women. They even have course tailored for kids. Check it out. 73 KC0FDG
Hi, how are things? Bit of an odd question - do you know what I'd need to do to make a telegraph key compatible with a (eurorack modular) synthesizer? They have 3.5mm jack inputs, oscillators, etc. Just trying to figure out what I need to do to trigger a signal using an older model telegraph key like the one in your video (which is gorgeous, by the way! Fair play!)
very interesting post , thats the very key Pat (EI2HX) lent me to do my morse test with and really liked its action , another nice post ,thanks Anthony
I first watched this with the playback accidentally at 1.5x and I couldn't copy anything. However at regular speed I was doing ok :-) nice work, thanks
I can understand one thing every time. CQ, I can't understand C or Q but CQ is like hearing my own name in english. CW would be a lot of fun because I like to do things without voice. I run digital, but only FT-8 right now. I want to do more QSO type stuff but I haven't learned that yet. I'm going to today.
Hello greetings from Peru. I commented that I am learning telegraphy I have the instrumentation. My question to the following as I connect the machine to the radio that devices are needed for it .. thanks.
How huge was the margin of error communicating this way? For instance I heard --.- .-. .-.. ..--.. = qrl? But -- .- .-. .-.. ..--.. would mean marl? when I saw the other video where that guy was typing twice the speed I wonder how anyone could have followed him.
Hi. I have two ww2 training morse code boards. I would like to connect these together for communication purpose to each other. Is this possible and if so how.
Im glad I could at least understand CQ CQ CQ... Morse code is not something manual, it becomes something of a language when you learn it, it'll be as automatic as riding a bicycle. Titanic, MGY CQD SOS
FB on your fist. I am more comfortable using my Vibroplex bugs. They are easier for me to get the sound I want. I have them slowed down to 18-20WPM so it’s fun not work.
Imagine if there is a room full of ppl who are using Telegraphs and someone walks in and gets annoyed by it and says Jesus Christ shut the fuck up that stuff is annoying
For me sending it is not as hard as trying to copy it. Sending it you are spelling out the word along the way. copying code especially from another straight key and beyond your familiar speed... I don't know. I can copy letters at 5wpm from W1AW, I'm completely lost at 13wpm regardless of where it came from. I can send at 13wpm as far as practicing goes, just can't copy, I use a retired cellphone with an onboard app and dial the RIT on the radio until the phone can decode it. I use the same program to decode W1AW at 13wpm, lock the speed in, then use it to proof myself. I'll grab a random piece of junk mail and just key away. I'm not using the key right, I don't know what it is, I can't key over half an hour without something cramping. I copied OE5FBL Karl. I'd like to work Austria too some day. So far my only DX contact is V31AX in Belize, but that's 10W on 40m SSB. Have yet to make my first CW contact. 73 de KN4GEI
Sending is far easier. Back when code was required for an amateur radio license, they never bothered testing if you could send. You just had to pass the receiving test. They assumed you could send.
I guess I'm not the only one who loves the sound of a telegraph
Isint that why we all searched this up
yeah

And thus, dubstep was born.
I thought Vynal in My Little Pony did Dubstep.

Best way I find is learn all the sounds of letters, then learn the sounds of words.

Austria ! from Ireland !! That sounded so nice. Nothing like the of a telegraph. Nice key from so long ago. Very cool, all of it .
Regards from W3CV ! Back when I got my license, I did not have internet to look up the other guy.
We had the callbook :-)) CW Lives on!
Brushing up on my Morse. Taking this down is really useful! Thanks for posting.

Does anyone still have and use a telegraph machine? It fascinates me id love to find one and learn how to send/decode messages
i have one i also have one it came with a ww2 instructighraph and a headset

Nice to see you on an old J38. Keeping the old skills alive ... de N5KU 😃👍

Like your fist, hand looks very relaxed.
Hello greetings from Peru.
I commented that I am learning telegraphy I have the instrumentation. My question to the following as I connect the machine to the radio that devices are needed for it .. thanks.
Your radio will have a side tone when you operate the key, it is not transmitting what you are sending, you have to key the transmitter to transmit
what is the speed u use?😅🙏
15wpm lol
Ok

Watching this as I want to get back into straight key. Need to learn to do it properly. My callsign just has too many dits in it - GM4SVM
Am I wrong in saying I think you were doing "CQ" a few times at the beginning?
You are absolutely correct! 😊

I don’t know why but for some reason if jobs like these still existed I feel like I’d have it
Hi. I have two ww2 training morse code boards. I would like to connect these together for communication purpose to each other. Is this possible and if so how.
How long did you run the j38 before transitioning to the paddles?
Can anyone recommend a good program (free and downloadable for PC) for Morse practice?
This is what I used : www.justlearnmorsecode.com/

I've been a ham for 9 years, and only recently started learning Morse code. TBH the only thing I recognized after you started was CQ. LOL
Great to hear that you are learning. Stick with it! You will find it very rewarding.
I have a telegraph don’t know what to do with it
Nice, thanks for posting...

Any tips on speeding up? I’m slow af
Practice, practice, practice. And on-air practice with real QSOs is by far the best way to learn. Best wishes de EI2KC
Where I can buy this?
You can often find US Army Signal Corps Type J-38 Land Line Telegraph Keys on eBay.
