Thank you for this amazing review. I love how all of your little negative points got adressed in the latest version of the Scarp 1 (9mm poles, two way zippers, dual sleeve pullouts). Goes to show that the company really wants to deliver the best product they can make and actually listen to there customers 👌 This will be the tent I buy for solohiking in the Highlands as soon as I move to Scotland 😊
Its a cracking tent mate, unfortunately mine was eaten by mice!!!! we had a plague of mice when we first moved into our new house and they ate 8-10 holes in my lovely scarp! I would love the new version, anyway did you say your moving to Scotland? hope you have a fantastic time wild camping :) Tim/Mandy
@@savedpurplecat sad to hear about your tent mate 😕 As long as I get accepted into my first choice university for my Master's degree, I'll be moving to Glasgow in January next year 😊the wild camping will be amazing as it is not allowed in Germany...
I have never heard of this tent before, however after seeing your review I am very interested in purchasing on of these tents. A brilliant and seeming honest review. You earned a new subscriber from this video alone. Great stuff 👌
PATRICK ŻERKOWSKI Thanks Patrick, I always like to review things before I buy them and hopefully it wil help to make somebody's mind up about this tent :) Tim
Nice review. The current version (mine arrived 2 days ago!) has incorporated most of the features you recommed: 9mm pole, side guys attach at 2 points etc.
Brilliant review, so glad I waited, 2019 scarp 1 as totally been overhauled according to Henry’s website, ordered mine last week, super excited, 54 and dying to smell it, been 40 years since camped, just hope I bought the right one, with all the kit including seam sealing and import tax , cost half the amount of the soulo, only time will tell I suppose, thanks for the review.
Very good review Tim. A good overview after thorough use in nasty weather. You have yourself a great tent for your wild camping trips. You mention the Akto, I've had my eye on it for a while, maybe someday. Nice video, thanks for sharing. ATB Nick.
Nick Harland Thanks Nick, yes the Akto takes some beating I think. The new Enan uses the same 9mm pole but is 600 grams lighter if I didn't own the Scarp i'd be saving up for one of those lol! love your vids Nick keep up the good work :) Tim
Nice review Tim and a very nice garden, looks good for a BBQ. I've had a Hillberg Akto for about 14 years I think and it's still going strong but then again it doesn't get as much use as my Quasar. Must make the effort to wild camp again as I'm getting too lazy and staying at campsites. Attitude is everything! Be nice to paint a mountain background on your fence Tim, now that would be cool! Take care and live simply.
mike quinlan Thanks Mike yeh a big mountain landscape would look great lol! funny I enjoy just putting them up in the garden, we can always pretend were in the lakes lol! the quasar is a beast Mike love them :) Tim
Pathfinder; Fergus Films Thanks Sinclair, I do really like this tent and want it to last a good while yet, have just used two guy lines to tension the pole on the inside of the tent and it works a treat, apparently Vango do this on their single hoop tents, take care my friend :) Tim
Hey, thanks for the great review, it was really helpful in making a choice. I think there's still some time to wait before I get a new tent but it will most likely be this one!
Mo and Gill Outdoors Thanks yous two! I been trying to find a tent that is a good as the top brands but for half the price and after a year of using this one, it isn't far off at all, thanks for watching guys :) Tim
Great review and comments Tim. I love the smell of my tent too, and miss the canvas tent smell from when I camped as a boy. You camp in some extreme locations and weather so you need very rugged gear! I'm into my third week of physical therapy and making progress. I hope to get fit enough to camp in June. Take care, Ossie
Ossie Weinert Oh yes Ossie the old canvas was such a great smell, I remember camping with the scouts at about 12 years of age and there was no ground sheet, just damp grass and the smell of old canvas is unforgettable! Great your making progress bro, these things take time but the right kind of movement is very beneficial for your back as you know. Hope to see you out and about very soon, thanks my friend :) Tim
Great informative review Tim. Like that tent more all the time. The company I bought the Telemark from have arranged to collect it and assess it ! I'll let you know how I get on.

Great video bud 👍🏻👍🏻 Ive been actually trying to get one of these and also know Murray so we have spoke about these before. His channel is awesome indeed. Cant seem to find one anywhere!! Hi Tim great review and i am worried about you smelling tents lol i looked at one of these after you had yours at Tryfan but had trouble getting one at the time. Great looking tent and well made and the weight is great too best thing about one is its much cheaper than a hilleberg. I love the garden and its big enought test pitch your tents and waterproof them nice size for summer BBQs Take Care Gillian
***** Hey hey Gill, how are you? hope all is well ducky. Yes its a good all rounder the Scarp, going to try to find a way to strengthen the sides, garden is great Gill its weird not having one for so long, but now I can pitch my tents and pretend to be up a mountain Lol! :) Tim
Stampistuta Thanks for that, yes there are some good tents to be had today, you can pick up a hilleberg second hand which would be a fantastic tent :) Tim
Absolutely bang on review!!! What is the waterproofness rating on the fly and the floor? How many thousands? I haven`t seen details about that anywhere... Thanks
Good point! All I can tell you is this tent is waterproof, very much so and I have had zero condensation. Normally the tents from the US are not as high i.e. 3-5000mm like our Terra Novas or Vangos etc. I used a Mountain hardwear Trango for some time (Bomber) the hydrostatic head was only 1500mm but it never ever leaked.
Cheers. .. This tent was the 2nd on my list before I bought the akto ( it's coming on this week ) . But if it's going to fail in the future than I'll get one for sure!
Great review - thanks for posting - just wondering how the new 9mm arch pole is vs the old 8.6mm as I've also got a Scarp with the old poles. Ditto the inner tensioner that you mention you were thinking of fitting - has that helped with winds attacking from the side? I've never used my cross poles due to the weight - do they add a lot in terms of stability in high wind in your experience please? One thing I've done is attach more guy lines to the corners plus 2 from each side of the main arch pole and long pegs to help in high winds Thanks again
Hi Mark, The Scarp is still in my opinion the best "All Rounder" I had a slight problem with mine after drying it out from an over nighter I found that mice had nibbled about eight holes in the fly!! I patched them as best as I could but ended up selling it cheaply to a friend in Scotland who in return sold me his Hilleberg Soulo. He was so impressed with the Scarp that he went out and bought a brand new one. My take on the Scarp now is that its still one of the best designed one man tents around, perfect if you want to take up some heavy camera gear but still have a fairly bomb proof shelter. I have changed my mind a bit on what a truly bomb proof shelter is, in short I would trust the Scarp with 9mm pole tensioners etc in winds up to 50mph, after that there is only one make I would feel really secure in and thats because of the quality of their materials (Hilleberg) If they get a rip in very nasty weather it will not/should not continue to rip leaving you in a real dilemma. So as much as I love the Scarp I would go for the Akto next time based on much tougher materials. However in winds of up to 50 mph I still think the Scarp is the best all round tent on the market, absolutely love them. Hope this answers your question. ps see my last video out in the Soulo in some rough weather cheers Tim.
Hi Tim - thanks for the reply and sorry to hear about your mouse problem- that's the problem with living in the countryside!! I do love the quality of Hillebergs but I do think the Scarp is a better design, more spacious, better ventilation etc than the Akto so I just need to make sure I get it bombproof! I've ordered the stronger 9mm poles from Tarptent who, like you say, have great customer service. I'm also thinking of having extra tabs sewn into the flysheet hem to also improve stability from sideward winds, so with extra guylines hopefully I'll be able to wildcamp whatever the uk weather has to throw at me.. What do you think of the Soulo? Surely you would never need an Akto other than to save some weight? Everything I've read on it reckons it's totally bombproof but how is the space on the inside say vs the Scarp as the walls are rounded from the ground above your head rather than vertical wall of Scarp....not too claustrophobic? Wasn't clear on your video - I think you were too busy just surviving! On paper it's just the cost that is the issue with the Soulo so hopefully the mice lead you to a good deal after all?! M
Hi Mark, your Scarp with the 9mm pole and extra guy lines will be a superb set up for the UK no doubt about that mate. I paid £500 for the Soulo second hand, only used once so if I sold it today I would get my money back. It only has one advantage over the Scarp and that is the sheer robustness of the thing, they are as bomb proof as your going to get. To live in they are not as comfortable as a Scarp and of course 1kg heavier! Like I said buddy the Scarp is still in my opinion the best all round one man tent out there. I have a Terra Nova Quasar Super lite and a MLD DuoMid and a Soulo but my favourite is still the Scarp! Happy wild camping mate, please let me know how you get on.
Sorry - typo ...led you to a good deal... Would love you to post on how you think the Soulo compares to the Scarp 1 (with/without crossing poles) btw re ability to stand high winds/ventilation/space etc, eg is the cut off 50mph winds between the two for withstanding winds or can the Scarp match the Soulo? You seem to find the 'best' weather for testing tents so you are the man to ask and maybe your friend who you swapped tents with - how they would compare the 2 tents?? Cheers. M
The reason I say 50mph is because its a really strong wind lol. I would not dream of deliberately going out in winds forecast at 50mph because the gusts could well exceed that and it would be way too dangerous to venture out in those conditions. But its very possible to go out in winds forecast at say 20-30 mph and find them exceeding 50 mph at times which is really on the limit of most tents. The crossing poles on the Scarp are great for winds heading from one end of the tent to the other, but broadside on winds of 50 mph plus would test the Scarp to its max. But it also depends on your guy lines and how well fastened the pegs are into the ground. Where I'm changing my mind a bit is when you examine the material the tent is made from, as most light weight tents will simply not cope with a tear in very strong winds, they could completely fail. Imagine being 2500 ft up in the middle of the night in freezing conditions with an insane wind chill factor and a tent that is being slowly ripped apart! So all tents have their limit, the heavier the tent the stronger the tent will tend to be. Its horses for courses, heavy tent but bomb proof, light tent but not so bomb proof lol. The Scarp is a bit of everything in one tent, it does all things well, but does not excel in any given area. The Soulo excels in one area... its as bombproof a tent as you are ever likely to get, hope that helps.
will brownless Thanks Will! Yes I will do a years review of the Argon in september, Its a great a tent mate! very light for what it can handle and a good looking tent I think, we are about to take it up a couple of munros in Scotland so should be another good test :) Tim
Good review mate. Ive been keeping an eye on these tents for a while specifically from the same channel you mentioned - Scotland's Mountains (not scottish mountains lol) yes his videos are good, but I enjoyed your review very much
Prophecy Prepper Cheers mate, yeh sorry Scotland's mountains! Iv'e just got in touch with Henry Shires and he does a 9mm pole for $25 so he's going to send me one over, I do love this tent and with the thicker pole I think she's a winner! :) Tim
Tim it`s a belter mate no doubt, if only they did it in green I think their sales would double might be worth having a word, I love the Akto as you know but the condensation is bad at times and makes me wonder, anyway a great review Tim and see how it fairs with the 9mm pole, ATB, George.
WakeyGeorge BusPassCamper. Thanks George, yes mate should be better with 9mm pole, it is too flexible on the sides, I used two gut lines and tied them to the centre of the inside of the hoop down to both ends, to create tension, it defo works and makes it more rigid, its something Vango do on their tents, when we next meet up I will show you, its a neat little trick :) Tim
Might get one of these myself. Seems to tick a lot of boxes in what I am looking for. Was the shipping from US ok? Did you get hit with big customs charge.
Thanks. Really interested in your idea of taking a bivvy bag. I've just ordered an alpkit xl bivvy. Do you think using this bivvy, in a tent, would also help turn a 3 season bag into a 4 season bag by extending the temp range (through the layering principle)? Would condensation be a major issue? Hi yes it will increase insulation and yes it will increase condensation too, I would only use one if you know its going to get very rough, check out Scotlands Mountains channel for more details on this tent
thanks Tim u seem mighty impressed by it.i had the akto but to be honest i just did not like it for such an expensive tent it was sleeping in a coffin.thanks anyway
+ST1VO I put it up in the garden a couple of times, it really does seem a good light weight option when you know the wind isn't going to be too strong, pitches really well. You will have good fun with the argon a cracking all rounder. Take care matey :) Tim
Hello again Tim!! Did you ever use the terra nova?? I'm looking to get one again, for the ultra light option. I've used the argon twice, it's been fine !
Thanks for doing the review. How have you found the 9mm pole? Would you recommend getting one initially with the tent and have you found any problems with the sleeve coping with the extra tension of the thicker pole?
+Bom Bast Hi yes I ordered a 9mm pole from tarptent, and it goes through the sleeve no problems, its a lot stronger for sure, I would recommend buying one with the tent yes. I also put my own tension system in using two guylines from the top of the hoop inside the tent down to the bottom on both sides, this makes the tent rock solid, hope this helps :) Tim
I think the Akto will take more punishment but the scarp is a better all round tent, the new one has a 9mm pole and is wide enough to sleep two people.
Hi, wondering if you can put me in the right direction. I'm looking to add extra guylines to my scarp 2 tent. Where did you manage to get the yellow ones you have added to the main pole?
Hi I can't remember exactly what shop it was, but two strong guy lines will do it, doubling them up either side. I used a karabiner to go through the pole sleeve to create the same configuration as a Hilleberg Akto.
Thank you for this amazing review.

2016 model has the 9MM pole.
Yeh its much improved thanks
is the tension system along the lines (pardon the pun) of the vango system?
Yes mate just the same
looks a super tent, where is the best place to buy from the states you reckon ,im in ireland .
Yes they ship it out to you, very cheaply as I remember, great tents though :) Tim
thanks Tim u seem mighty impressed by it.i had the akto but to be honest i just did not like it for such an expensive tent it was sleeping in a coffin.thanks anyway
Hi Tim...
I've lost your number....
Wondered if you've tried out the tn photon yet..?
I'm yet to try the argon, but soon hopefully!!
:)
What is the HH head on it?????
Thanks for doing the review. How have you found the 9mm pole? Would you recommend getting one initially with the tent and have you found any problems with the sleeve coping with the extra tension of the thicker pole?
+Bom Bast Hi yes I ordered a 9mm pole from tarptent, and it goes through the sleeve no problems, its a lot stronger for sure, I would recommend buying one with the tent yes. I also put my own tension system in using two guylines from the top of the hoop inside the tent down to the bottom on both sides, this makes the tent rock solid, hope this helps :) Tim

Great, thanks Tim - I'll definitely consider this when I order. Cheers Jon
it has 2 vestibules right...? almost looks like you could take the front wheel off your bike and store it in one of them... ???
Think that might be a bit tight, the vestibules are not too big, are they mountain bike wheels?
Thanxs for the review as I'm torn between the scarp and the Akto.
I think the Akto will take more punishment but the scarp is a better all round tent, the new one has a 9mm pole and is wide enough to sleep two people.
Great review, hope we never grow up :)
Too true Chris! forever young!

Lol agreed
