..been into Sun Ra's stuff for a while now, but recently i've been more deeply appreciating...so much diversity...so much deep and boundless creativity...thanks for this vid post.
saw them live dozens of times in NYC back in the day..couple of times sat at the bar ( rum and cokes) in the early 70's at the "old five spot" with a couple of the cats in the Arkestra..
I saw the akestra last year live with marshall allen and i can say Sun Ra(his vision/Power) isnt dead! the Keyboarder/Pianist was fulfilled with Sun Ras Soul incredible band!
amazing ! un grand musicien de jazz qui a commencé sa carrière en interprétant du jazz classique puis a évolué avec son groupe en se mettant en scène dans des performances géantes !
Fabulous! Wisdom , music knowledge from another world! Just beautiful. And this shows up at a perfect time for me. Thank you Sun Ra! Thank you Arkestra!
mario7frankielee That is a very good read.A well researched book that offers the reader much insight into the music and life of Sun Ra.The author even interviewed some of Ra's relatives. One of them said: "He ain't from no Mars.He was born right here in Birmingham, over by the train station".
That is indeed a great book and while your at it add “A Pure Solar World: Sun Ra and the Birth of Afrofuturism” to your reading list (and those are just a start re. some of the great material written about him)
No Sun Ra didnt allow the band members to drink Alcohol or bring women to rehersal or recordings because it messed up the energy flow. And if a band member broke the rules they were dock and disciplined...
Non per altro, ci poniamo in una maniera errata nel promuovere la nostra isola. Il popolo Sardo in passato ha avuto a che fare con l'Egitto, ma il resto d'italia non c'entra nulla.
He thoroughly fooled "jazz aficionados" into thinking his was some kind of eclectic, futuristic, meaningful music. In reality, it was junk noise. But he pulled it off, so, that deserves a modicum of respect....I guess.
I think you have probably listened very few things. Because he was clearly a very sophisticated musician and a master of harmony. And onestly the head of the tune in the video is far from being free jazz, it has a clear melody.
I love him. He and Stockhausen are my favourite composers of 20th century

Holy shit. My spirit is enumerated, elucidated, platinum gold plated.
@VictorSturgeon
Sun Ra and Chester Burnett (Howlin' Wolf) were two artists who never let their groups partake: most others did.
VictorSturgeon, Zappa too.
Great footage. Do you know what year the last 30 seconds is from? I assume this is footage from Italy.
Thanks!
That was in 1980, in Sardina (IT)
Man this is far out

you may want to try listening. it’s a wonderful way to become knowledgeable.
@@rostasi Nah. Tried to. It hurt my musician brain...badly.
@@dme1016 So, you didn't like it. Why all the jazz sociology nonsense?
@@rostasi It doesn't matter. I'm cooking cicadas right now. Mmmmm...
