Such a great game, had this as a kid on my MegaCD, when your only games are Road Avenger and Sherlock Holmes detective something text adventure...you learn to get very good at Road Avenger!

@Ruby Williams No way Williams. Sega CD all the way with this one. Apart from the intro track, which still conveys emotions during the intro well enough at least, the jams in the levels are far more engaging and cruise worthy. Definitely worth having the mod for if you need the better visuals.
@Ruby Williams I think I will concede the final stage though honestly. The Arcade version is more dramatic + cinematic here, and appropriately so. The Sega CD version is doing what it always does being high energy and all, but that suits the rest of the game more than these tense final moments once your car crashes, and you get the ambulance etc. Good news is, with this ogg mod, anyone can mix and match now via Audacity. Take the Arcade intro and final level, Sega CD rest of the OST, or whatever mix someone else has in mind.
I asked him about this in an email in 2007 and again in late 2017 on twitter. I didn't get any straightforward answer. I would speculate that he isn't in possession of the original masters anymore.
Road Blaster is the storyline to Double Dragon 1 when Billy Lee loses his wife in this game. Hence the red car from the garage at the beginning of Double Dragon Mission 1 when his new girlfriend Marian is kidnapped by the Black Warriors, along with the helicopter from Cobra Command in Double Dragon 2 The Revenge when Marian is killed by the Shadow Warriors. It all makes sense now because the designer is Yoshihisa Kishimoto right before he was employed at Technos Japan.
This is an amazing job. Love that someone has the arcade laserdisc. I should blow through my LaserActive version and see if everything lines up on mine. Also, little things: 24:55 "Road Blaster" is tagged on the wall.
A little confession, as far as I can tell there wasn't any noticeable difference with the deaths, with no music and being short, so the audio from them is the arcade original.
Depends. Was the animation outsourced to Toei Animation? Because that was the studio producing the 15,000 cels for Road Blaster/Road Avenger. Another cartoon with a similar looking car (weird 3rd gen camaro / trans am mix) is Turbo Teen from 1984. Toei did the animation for that one as well.
@@houstonhelicoptertours1006 From what I have found it doesn't look like Toei was involved in the animation of Michel Valiant, yet looking at it just now stil strikes me as extremely similar in style.

I always thought Motoi Sakuraba's Mega CD version soundtrack was awesome especially the final stage. Shame it was never released on CD or anything....

i found this game to be pretty challenging back in the day. I remember the load times on the SCD was pretty slow.

The car animation reminds me a looot of the Michel Vaillaint (Heroes on Hot Wheels) cartoon. I wonder if that is just a coincidence.

the car moves in such awkward way that it gives viewers a thrilling experience.
2D animation is great at a lot of things. But definitely weak when trying to do 3D
