Some might like to know that there’s a wonderful story to making of this song... Pt. Samta Prasad ji, a superb maestro tabla player, was actually unwilling to play tabla for this song it being a filmy one (which those days were looked down upon by classical music artistes), but he was persuaded with keenness and even agreeing to a very high fees (I think some ₹15000/- of those days for this single song) which was actually quoted to turn down the request, but it was agreed to and Panditji had to come to play tabla for this song, and this nice number got borne for us all to enjoy forever. Besides him, lyricist Shailendra ji and the great music director SD Burman Daa, Rafi ji sure brought a class n quality to it with his own contribution of such nice singing. 🙏🏻🌷

It could be a commercial consideration to use a more popular singer. But the best number was sung by Manna Dey only.
I am yet to see/hear Tabla rendition of this caliber in a playback movie song. No wonder SDB stands out amongst his peers to rope in such an orthodox and pure classical Tabla player in a movie song. I would say Rafi sahab's singing is like an accompaniment to Pt Samta Prasad's tabla here. And to say something like this of Rafi's singing that too by an ardent follower of his, is scandalous. But I stand my ground, this tabla rendition is definitely a masterpiece and I am not sure how much is improvised, but its absolute. Rafi sahab's at his usual best, beautiful voice and effortless singing. Asha Parekh ji is the epitome of gracefulness and dancing here. I still don't know who's the tabla player onscreen?

Some might like to know that there’s a wonderful story to making of this song... Pt. Samta Prasad ji, a superb maestro tabla player, was actually unwilling to play tabla for this song it being a filmy one (which those days were looked down upon by classical music artistes), but he was persuaded with keenness and even agreeing to a very high fees (I think some ₹15000/- of those days for this single song) which was actually quoted to turn down the request, but it was agreed to and Panditji had to come to play tabla for this song, and this nice number got borne for us all to enjoy forever. Besides him, lyricist Shailendra ji and the great music director SD Burman Daa, Rafi ji sure brought a class n quality to it with his own contribution of such nice singing. 🙏🏻🌷

Tabla was played by renowned Pandit Shamta Prasad. R D Burman received training in Tabla from him. S D Burman used to rely on Pandit Shamta Prasad very much.

I am yet to see/hear Tabla rendition of this caliber in a playback movie song. No wonder SDB stands out amongst his peers to rope in such an orthodox and pure classical Tabla player in a movie song. I would say Rafi sahab's singing is like an accompaniment to Pt Samta Prasad's tabla here. And to say something like this of Rafi's singing that too by an ardent follower of his, is scandalous. But I stand my ground, this tabla rendition is definitely a masterpiece and I am not sure how much is improvised, but its absolute. Rafi sahab's at his usual best, beautiful voice and effortless singing. Asha Parekh ji is the epitome of gracefulness and dancing here. I still don't know who's the tabla player onscreen?
To become any singer one must have classical music education , but to become a singer like Rafi Sahab it is not at all possible , if he has no purity of heart and blessing of God .
