Only hindi is Indian for you. Cannot even imagine the existence of great or greater artistes in other language regions. Many ' Indians' say that the Telugu or Thamil versions of the song is a better classical than the hindi one.

During the rehearsal of this song in recording theatre in Madras(now Chennai)Telugu top singer Ghantasala who sang this song in its original Telugu movie with the same title happened to pass by the theatre ,Lathaji on seeing him came out and requested him to sing this song with her,Ghantasala on knowing from her that co-signer was Md Rafi he replied that it would not be proper and she said that she would wait for his decision.Ghantasala on returning home thought that it would hurt the feelings of Rafi sab if he heeded to Lathaji request.Hence when a call came from studio next day he refrained by seeking excuse.This episode was known in cinema music industry and also occasionally narrated by Lathaji and also by Mrs Savithri Ghantasala in a book on Ghantasala

If a language is limited to a region, well, that regional area and population is more than that of many nations world wide, having all different culture too. Yet, its just because of this Indian federation policy that our language and culture etc have not become internationally popular like any Italy, France, Spain, Germany and many such nations. Hindi is also limited to some region, not to the entire country. Next, Lata is really silky and incomparable with her voice. I am a big fan of her. But, many other singers of India are also incomparable with any other singer because of their unique voice. P Leela can be compared only with P Leela and so is for many singers. Also, the admiration of a Singer's voice depends upon the taste of the audience. Some people may not be impressed by a silky voice. So, we cannot downgrade any other great indian singer while comparing with Lata.

You seem to be an ' absolute ' devotee of Bollywood which is mafia rich and top! Quality in which aspects? You opine non- hindi cinema or music is substandard? Many Bengali, Kerala, Thelugu, Thamil etc movies are duly dubbed or remade in Hindi, why? Pity on you. Aspiring for a chance in B'wood is mainly to get wider acclamation and exposure of talent in the country, not to acquire more 'quality skills ' there. If socalled regional artistes are not qualitative, they wouldn' t have got a chance there. That said, many highly skilled non-hindi artistes don't really aspire to venture into B 'wood for different reasons. But their skills are surely at par or even more than those of B'wood. It is absolute rubbish to boast Bwood artistes' superiority over many non-Bwood performers. Hindi singers you stated are still not known to many Indians who don't know Hindi. Go and ask village peasants of any non-hindi places. Since Hindi has been forced in many non hindi states for decades, more people now know about Bwood than those some decades ago. Knowing doesn't mean agreeing Bwood superiority over their own one. As per you, only those who perform in hindi cinema are to be called as national artistes, not those greats who excelled in all South Indian languages! Your referred singers are all my favorite artistes. I like rafi sir a lot. But in this particular song ghantasala sir tops. One information : in an interview heroine Anjaladevi( also film producer) said latamangeshkarji somuch insisted that ghantasalasir for Hindi version.however distributors objected fearing accent problem.
