Orchids are generally not fussy when it comes to the quantity and quality of artificial light they receive. Hence about half of my Orchid collection is grow under artificial light, in lack of a sunnier room!
Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, Zygopetalum, Paphiopedilum, Jewel Orchids and others grow and bloom without problems under LED panels, LED tubes and even some grow lights. Here are some more videos for context:

I’ve been using the cheapest basic LED kitchen (under-cabinet) lights for more than a year now, and all my phals are growing like crazy, much better than the previous setup with a lot less light. I will look at a brighter bulb for my Aliceara now, though. Great video, Danny! Thank you!

Picking lights was so complicated for me, every time I tried to KISS it and just do as you said (if it looks lit it's good enough), I would stumble on some article on how the spectrum we see and the one needed by plants are different... I ended up following your choice with the Leroy lights for my paphs, Bulbophyllums and standard phals, and for the cattleyas and species phals I picked a domestic T5 fluorescent that had a good spectrum. So far, so good!

I find that vandas *grow* perfectly fine under a fair amount of grow lights. Blooming is more mixed bag. The originally ascocendas seem to bloom just fine there - ampullaceum and miniatum/garayi have definitely made blooms with only artificial. The ampullaceum seems especially prolific, made four spikes in a row just recently. The big ones don't bloom there, but it may have to do with temperatures also. They usually grow leaves reliably, and bloom as soon as I move them to the curtain pole.

For as long as I can remember we would keep non-blooming orchids (aside from mine which were in my room at all times) in my parents bedroom, so they would get daylight when it was available and that was pretty much it, we didn't keep the light on all the time. In my room I would turn the light on when it got dark and usually it'd be brighter in my room for longer and it would only be dark in my room when I slept. I don't remember there being any particular differences in how often and how much they bloomed. When they bloomed we'd move them to the living room area, so that we could enjoy them and it would usually fit that another orchid had finished blooming, so they switched places. It worked quite well.

Cattleyas can do very well under lights in my very humble opinion, but i do think they need more then 4000K standard lights. I got some of my high light cattleyas and brassavolas under my 12W Gemma LED growlights and they grow good bulbs and lots of roots. Most are not mature enough to bloom already but i think that will come in time too.

Great video and info! I have two vanda Pachara which are in west window for about 5 hours in summer now;I also complement with LED grow panel lights...good results,as I water them a lot and they have produced three new full-sized leaves within four months. I will be adding two zygos as well . Thanks for good ideas!

I used 4' fluorescent tubes in school and had a happy Brassavola nodosa. My phals have outgrown a windowsill so I'm going to try an LED panel in a closet. Great series, I have an "ICU" for neglected orchids that I get from friends ☺️ I get the enjoyment of nursing the plants back to health, and then I return them when they are in bloom.

I think you should change your name to MissOrchidAngel. I was given an orchid and love it so much I bought it a friend. I did something wrong and lost many flowers and buds. I lost a complete flower stem. I am here to learn what I did wrong. I think it was too much sun and too much water but I'm not sure. Both plants seem to be on the mend but orchids are so very different to the roses I once grew. I was watering over the top of the crown, enough said. No damage I can see. I have bought new pots, orchind growing medium and orchid fertiliser. Where on earth do they get their nourishment from ? What function are arial roots ? I have a lot to learn. Thanks for being here.

Nice video ! Ilive in the states and have grown cattleyas with 5000K LED strip lights with very little natural sun light and they thrive. The number of lights depends on my light needs of the plant for me. So you can have catts and be successful !

    Hello!
You are talking about vandas and high light Orchids under grow light. I have bought 2 spot x 50 w, cold white, and my 2 vandas in pot are growing so much better than outside (750m, in mountains in Switzerland). The leaves are growing faster, larger ans longer than with natural light and on one plant, you can see violet spot pigmentation appearing whithout sun burnt so I keep my finger cross and if a spike appears, I will tell you :-) it seems that it adores the place :-)

1:01 I am melting for this orange + dark spots Phal.
11:10 I have very good results with mini and small cattleyas under a 50W LED panel set for 12 hours as a supplement for window growing, otherwise they wouldn't bloom much.
And they bloom very often despite the dark, long winters at my latitude.
Not sure it would be that good as ''artificial only'' culture.

Where my plants sit, its in a window but its super shaded. Theres enough light that my plants are happy and thriving. But i do have a very dark corner and I bought a cheaper grow led from Amazon. So far the only difference I've noticed is my wandering jew has exploded in growth, but im thinking i need to leave it on longer.

If you have a humidifier nearby, the roots tend to go towards it

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Hi, other than mechanical means (tying it and moving it closer and closer) there is no way to 'train' it. I can assure you they will not grow towards the humidity, that is a false claim that's some growers are really keen on propagating in my opinion. If roots grew towards moisture, they would all grow in the medium, not out. However aerial roots all over the place are normal on Phals, so maybe there is no need to do anything ☺️

I have a question. I have an orchid that I’ve had for a year and had never repotted. I read that I should repot it because most orchids come in less than ideal medium like sphagnum moss. I checked my orchids medium and sure enough it was in sphagnum moss. It also was really to big for the pot it was in. I then repotted it in bark medium and I had to remove most of its roots because they were gross. It does have aerial roots that were thick and fleshy and very healthy. I did spray the leaves and aerial roots with an orchid fertilizer. A few days after I repotted it I noticed that it’s aerial root were shriveling. Now it’s been about 2 weeks and I checked it’s root system and it’s growing new roots but the aerial roots are still shriveled. Why do you think they’re still shriveled? Thanks in advance for your input!

My plant room has a nice east facing window that gets a nice amount of indirect light, but also has some artificial light for my more light needy plants and I'm worried that makes it TOO much light? is that a thing?
