I had to keep reminding myself to come back to this when I next watched TH-cam in a browser so I wasn't one finger typing on my phone; I really wanted to get my thoughts across clearly. I've thought since I first saw Chinchilla perform this that, as well as the more conspicuously clear "keys in my knuckles" line that all women can relate to, there's a less obvious one in there, one that's even more brutally profound. I remember back when I was studying A Streetcar Named Desire for English Literature learning something interesting about a scene where Blanche is screaming/threatening to scream "Fire!". We learnt that back then and for quite some time since, perhaps still even now, that when attacked by a rapist a woman should scream "Fire!" or "Murder!" instead of "Rape!" because both of the first two are more likely to attract someone willing to help than the latter. Which is all kinds of sad in and of itself. I may be completely wrong but I've always thought that that is what Chinchilla's line about screaming "murder! so you can never hurt no-one" - implying that they'll have been caught and locked up because someone actually came to help - is about.
I have to disagree: I don't think Chinchilla is "performing" (even though I used that exact word in the reaction). I think she EMBODIES the music and her soul is visibly truthful. And we get to witness it.

I saw in an interview, she said the she thought up the "keys in you fingers like I have to" during this performance. She is so present in her performance that she can move with her feelings and it sounds like it eas always meant to be there.
This is, hands down, one of the best performances of a song I've seen in my 63 years. I've seen this video probably a hundred times or more, and it still blows me away every time. The costume, the voice (dear lord, what a voice!), the acting - it's all just pure perfection, and the piano accompaniment is sublime. Just one little example of what I mean about her acting - at the very end of the song she gives a little double head-bob, like an automaton winding down, perfectly completing the whole music-box ballerina vibe of the song. It's a tiny thing, but it conveys so much. Even the costume echoes this, just like a ballerina's tutu, but as imagined by Tim Burton. That line at the end "put your keys in your knuckles like I have to" is not in the original song. She gives the story of where that came from in one of her interviews (which are all well worth watching, she's such a lovely person). Briefly, she was working with the pianist to adapt the song for live performance, and they were trying various ways of finishing it. In one of those attempts she just blurted that line out, and the pianist pounced and said "That's it, that's the way to end the song." Love your reaction - I'm appalled by your own testimony of what women have to put up with, and relieved that you managed to escape. It's a harsh truth - some men are scum. I made it out (thanks to INSTINCT, not myself LOL) and it's added a facet to my core. I file away tragedy and refer to it in perilous situations. One cannot UN-BAKE a cake, despite how it came out. I believe we are here to evolve and grow as individuals, to take our collected experiences into the Great Unknown. Okay this is my first time hearing this song and seeing this video and holy fuck balls her visual performance was as good as her performance. It was a piece of art. The way I was understanding the line about keys in the knuckles in the song is her giving the guy a warning that he should walk around with his keys in his hands because he'll need to protect himself from her because she's coming for him. But that concept is something that all women can relate to because women know that it only takes one man to ruin their life in the most horrifying ways and we'll do what we can to protect ourselves from experiencing that.

I saw in an interview, she said the she thought up the "keys in you fingers like I have to" during this performance. She is so present in her performance that she can move with her feelings and it sounds like it eas always meant to be there.
Yeah... I'm still not over that line. DOPE-TRAGIC-DOPE
This is, hands down, one of the best performances of a song I've seen in my 63 years.
I've seen this video probably a hundred times or more, and it still blows me away every time.
The costume, the voice (dear lord, what a voice!), the acting - it's all just pure perfection, and the piano accompaniment is sublime.
Just one little example of what I mean about her acting - at the very end of the song she gives a little double head-bob, like an automaton winding down,
perfectly completing the whole music-box ballerina vibe of the song. It's a tiny thing, but it conveys so much.
Even the costume echoes this, just like a ballerina's tutu, but as imagined by Tim Burton.
That line at the end "put your keys in your knuckles like I have to" is not in the original song.
She gives the story of where that came from in one of her interviews (which are all well worth watching, she's such a lovely person).
Briefly, she was working with the pianist to adapt the song for live performance, and they were trying various ways of finishing it.
In one of those attempts she just blurted that line out, and the pianist pounced and said "That's it, that's the way to end the song."
Love your reaction - I'm appalled by your own testimony of what women have to put up with, and relieved that you managed to escape.
It's a harsh truth - some men are scum. I hope you're in a much better place now.

I'm not that sharp, unfortunately - it took me a lot of views to spot the head-bob, and it was only then that it clicked into place that she was doing a music box ballerina thing.
That's just one person's take, of course.
Others have described it as having a circus ringmaster vibe, and I can totally see that as well.
Chinchilla is layers upon layers. She's beautiful, articulate, funny, quirky and insanely talented.

I don't know if you watch any other reactors but I think you, out of all the others I've seen, would relate the most to what I saw happen on Crow Reactions' channel when she started watching Ren and Chinchilla's live cover of Sexual Healing. Chinchilla belted out the first notes and Crow Reactions screamed "SHUDDAAAP!!" and paused the video because it was just SO MUCH. If you get the time do check it out.

Chinchilla really is something else isn't she. Shares a lot of traits that Ren does - certainly in the way she captivates and draws you in and holds your attention - something you are born with.

I made it out (thanks to INSTINCT, not myself LOL) and it's added a facet to my core. I file away tragedy and refer to it in perilous situations. One cannot UN-BAKE a cake, despite how it came out.

The way I was understanding the line about keys in the knuckles in the song is her giving the guy a warning that he should walk around with his keys in his hands because he'll need to protect himself from her because she's coming for him. But that concept is something that all women can relate to because women know that it only takes one man to ruin their life in the most horrifying ways and we'll do what we can to protect ourselves from experiencing that.

Thank you for speaking your Truth. So sorry that happened to you. I have a history of violent trauma involving a gun. Instinct did indeed take over and I was able to get to safety. But I will never forget the sensation of the cold steel against my temple. Just sharing so you, and others, know you're not alone.
I was also taught to carry keys between my knuckles.
'Fingers' Live is my favorite of all Chinchilla's performances. I've experienced MANY times and she still gives me chills!

There ABSOLUTELY ARE fantastic, brave, upstanding men. There are MANY MANY of them. I was raised by one, married another (with whom I am still great friends, although our marriage didn't last beyond a decade).
