  • How to Kill Varroa - How To Apply Apivar - What is Apivar
    Apivar is a mite control treatment that contains the miticide, Amitraz.
    In this video I show you how to apply ApiVar to your colonies to control varroa mites.
    Black Mountain Honey is a No Nonsense Beekeeping Channel.
    We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.
    We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
    Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

    We supply F1 Mated Buckfast Queens throughout the season. These are genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

    We are passionate about beekeeping and really enjoy helping beekeepers through our TH-cam channel.
    On our channel you can find information on making splits with swarm cells, making increase with queen cells, grafting larvae, foulbrood and disease inspection, honey extraction and machinery, top tips for beginners, products reviews, instructions and guidance plus much more.
    #NO NONSENSE BEEKEEPING is a UK based beekeeping channel, designed to keep beekeeping as simple and enjoyable as possible. There are no overly complicated techniques or intricate pieces of equipment.
    We cover all beekeeping topics ranging from queen rearing, disease recognition/control, honey extraction, swarm management/collection, how to make splits and much more!
    My personal favourite aspects of beekeeping are selecting queens for rearing, rearing queens for mating, making up nucs for overwintering and collecting swarms.
    We aim to bridge the gap between commercial and hobbyist beekeepers and cater for beekeepers of all experience levels.

    I hang mine using wooden kebab skewers, I find that it tilts the strips nicely and the bees have no problem getting past and they brush against the strip.

      Cheers Kevin. Glad you enjoyed it. Same camera. Just on my Samsung phone. Although new phone coming next week! We will do a couple of 8k videos!

      Black Mountain Honey Not sure our eyes (mine anyhow) could deal with 8k. Best get your order in for a 1tb memory card or all your vlogs will be 3 minutes long! Thought you must be using a top end GoPro but evidently not needed. Good work, save a spot on your mantle piece for the 100k subs award!

      @@kevinperree7764 Wow! Im happy ive made it to 1k subs! ;) I do have a Go Pro 8 and the picture is great but its fiddly work. Yeah - my laptop actually struggles with 4k tbh. Im upgrading to a note 20 ultra so hopefully the video will improve a little bit :)

    Great help! questions...if i have 2 layers of brood, do I put apivar in both layers? also, how do the bees get to the syrup in your upper layer?? new beekeeper here!

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. We always split the apivar over two levels if there is two levels of brood. Just check its not stores above then you can place it all down below. Needs to be on the brood frames. Bees should have access to the syrup through the hive and frames

    Hi there- again. Binge watching a lot of your vids at min! Pls forgive my newbie ignorance, but if using this product, & say put it on that 1st week in August, would you still be making weekly inspections as well, or leave it for the 6/7wk period when you’re removing it? Rly grateful for your help, thanks so much. Useful video- as ever! Best Nicki 😄👍

      I stop doing any weekly inspections once it's in. Chances of swarms leaving in August are very low indeed but there is always a risk.

    Have you any thoughts on the possibility of Apivar leaving a residue in the wax? I have seen that when you do demaree swarm control you take the honey stored in the box that you put on the top. Would this box have had Apivar in it during the autumn and so have a possible residue?

    10:35 so if the bees are walking it around the frames are these frames ok to turn into supers the following year ?

    Hi
    I have bien stung in the hand yesterday. What type of gloves do you recommend ?
    Thanks for your help.

      All gloves with let the odd sting through.
      Best for protection are the blue rubber ones that beekeeping suppliers sell

    Is there a temperature requirement or warning with this product?

    Once open, ones not used do they have to be binned or if stored used the following year?

    Hi. Lawrence.
    I used Apivar 2 years ago, on two hives, 2 days after using the Apivar, both hives swarmed!
    Have you any experience of this happening?
    Best.
    Stuart

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Stuart. Never had that happen once. Very odd indeed. Its an incredibly effective miticide so if your bees havent been treated with it then definitely give it another go. Can get excellent prolonged drops of varroa. Laurence

    Hi Lawrence, do you use vaporised oxalic acid crystals at all?

  • @neilfrozenoak5438
    @neilfrozenoak5438 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey Laurence, fab stuff as always
    Was reading a forum earlier, one recommended Apivar for 6-10 weeks and then a OAvape as a mop up. Could that not lead towards resistance build up?
    Thanks 🫡

    Hi. If I'm leaving a super of honey on for my bees do I still need to feed with Apivar?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Be very careful using ApiVar with any supers on (even if left for the bees). Amitraz is wax soluble so should never be exposed to the super frames if they are EVER to be used for honey extraction.

    The way you show the strips in the thumbnail is not how you are supposed to put them in. You might want to check out
    Véto-pharma's video "Tutorial: How to use Apivar strips?".
    But yeah, using toothpics or screws might work better anyway.
