Congratulations to Danica. You see a lot saying they choose the Philippines over other countries because they speak English, the one thing they fail to realize is the level of English spoken. If you're relegated to simple things like weather or how someone is doing, they're going to get tired of it quickly, if they were expecting some deeper conversation. Using idioms, humor, sarcasm, abbreviations, etc. is not going to be understood by many because they take words for their literal meaning. Filipina's should know American, British, and Australian English are all different, all 3 may speak English, but that doesn't mean they can communicate with each other on a deeper level either. They shouldn't be embarrassed or afraid to make mistakes, I think most foreigners know (Can't say all, some may just be condescending a$$holes) it's not their native language and don't expect them to speak it perfectly or fluently, and they are willing to help them learn, as long as they take it as HELP and not them being condescending, the best way to learn is just speak it and make your mistakes with someone who can help you learn. If they don't understand something, just say so, the native speaker can say it another way or explain so they can understand.
As always, thank you Lorie and ladies for this, it was fun to see something a little different, and hopefully the ladies had fun with it, even if they didn't win and see that they may feel they are communicating with a foreigner, when the foreigner is actually lost as to what she's trying to say. Yes, but even speaking about the weather could fail if using some idom phrases about the weather;)
BUT it is such small misunderstandings that gives some sparks and light teasings;)
And besides if you remember yourself as a child watching a movie... you understood the movie one way... but when you became an adult you suddenly realized that the movie had "hidden" inuendos that were more to adult content etc.
So its like 2 POW... it adds layers.
It adds fun into the relationships:)

And they're really heavy about answering the questions and they don't know what's wrong. I'm do. That's like if you were asking Americans about Tagalog. How many Americans can speak to gallow? It will be probably hard, but once you learn a little bit, you can learn something. It's important to learn both languages if you're dating a Filipino girl and she's dating an American Girl. What your questions were awesome and I love your attitude and the way you carry on show and how you what's pointing out that her friends were cheering for her and all that that's so beautiful. That was a fun challenge! All of us have the same difficulty when communicating in a second language. These Filipinas have learned English; but the have not had to “live American, British, Canadian or Australian English.” I saw the same thing happen the first time I had a deeper conversation with a German exchange student when I was in college. She had to work hard to follow our casual conversations. But I marveled at her courage to actually go to another country and put herself in a situation where she had to master that language to be successful. All of us English speakers would have the sam experience if we were pressed to explain or interpret Tagalog idioms!😀
To me there are multiple parts to higher-level proficiency in a second or third level. First we must all grasp the language at the kindergarten or early elementary level. If we’re lucky we will advance to the 6th-8th grad level. But to get the advanced levels we must become familiar with the most common expressions shared by all parts of that society. Many of these expressions integrate religion, history, folklore, superstition and other things. Few multilingual speakers can do this for all the languages they speak. Most bilingual speakers can’t do this for both languages they speak. Those who have reached this advanced level of language mastery, where they also recognized and use that language’ s idioms in the proper context, often have the following. They have lived daily life in each society for some significant period of time. Therefore they have used that language at the cultural competence level.

I can see why these saying will be confusing or not make sense to non westerners. Break a leg I have not heard being used in my country, I think it is used in the entertainment industry mainly. Titillating, origins of idioms are very interesting mostly derived from British culture and mostly shortened over periods but most have interesting origins “turn a blind eye” is one of my favourites, Lord Nelson leading a naval attack in 1801 pretending not to see a signal and attacking all the same. Great stuff.

Less than half of US citizens could tell you the definition of "idiom".
Lorie, do you know where "break a leg" comes from? Do you know what "hitting on you means"? How about "it's a cinch"?
I like this video but I think you should use them phrases in a sentence. Example ( maybe I can pull some strings to help you).

As an American, I haven't heard half of these idioms in over 30 years. Unlikely those idioms have been used in recent popular culture. I work with many very intelligent people with English as their second language currently living in the US who would get the same proportion correct. Great job to your contestants.

As a non-american, where english is 2nd language... i understood all those idoms.
All used within last 5 years.
Filipino english is OFTEN (not allways) very simple english, and i see many americans and uk expats getting frustrated because they talk to fast and to complicated with Filipino ppl remember english are often their 3rd language
So english native guys keep it simple and slow down, and you won't be so frustrated over misunderstandings and miscommunication.

"Filipino English" is just another term for "pidgin English" which is just chopped up English words mashed together, not real English. Very few Filipinos can speak ACTUAL English or understand it, whether you speak it slow or fast, nor do many Filipinos know very many English words, so using "simple" words doesn't help either. Fact is, Filipinos are in general very ignorant of any other languages, just as are Americans.
