- Foreign Service Officer Rob Joswiak is back with a big update about the process of becoming a FSO. He reiterates the need to 'just take the test (FSOT)'!
1. Register for the test: home.pearsonvu...
2. Department of State statement: www.state.gov/...
3. Path to Foreign Service: fsocompass.com...
4. My website: www.robjoswiak.com

After six long years of waiting, I'll finally be old enough to take the FSOT this October.
Thank you for the encouraging words.
Thank you for putting this out. I recall reaching out to you earlier last year and you were really helpful in directing me in my early career. I’m still in undergrad right now, and I was quite nervous studying for both the LSAT and the FSOT. Now that I know it won’t be a pass/fail grading system, I am a little relieved. This will not stop my grind though!
Thank you for the information! Holistically, this reduces test anxieties for many of us I’m sure.
This is so encouraging! Thank you, Rob! You rock! :)
I’m glad I watched this video since I am not so confident with the test. Thank you!
You got this!
Thanks for the motivation, Rob! My FSOT is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon
You got this. Keep at it.
How did it go?
I’m never giving up eventhough everything that could go wrong and happen to a person happened to me and my children.
Thanks for your video. I find the most difficult part is the application itself with their Personal Narrative questions, asking you to provide someone who can verifying your answers.
I suggest joining this site and working with others like yourself.

I am so bad at taking test because I get so nervous and stressed but now knowing this it’s going to be bit stress free…
Just go in and do your best. You'll find your score out and can go from there. Takes most people multiple times. You can do it!
@@RobJoswiak How would you compare the UN's entry exam with FSOT?
@@djaloshi69 I do not know. I've never taken that exam and know nothing about it. Sorry.
@@RobJoswiak I appreciate your prompt reply. I understand, I took the UN entry exam it was not hard, the hard part is getting on their rooster list? Thank you for the FSO Compass reference. It's wonderful.
Thank you for this information. I just did the application process and waiting to get through with customer service because one letter in my name is incorrect but after I get my name correct ill take the test hopefully Monday June 6th
Hi, how’d you do?
I took my first test last week. My doctor told me that her friend tried for four years and finally got it. So if I don't get in this time. I will continue to try.
How’s it? How did you prepare yourself for it? I am planning to take it but there’s a lot of info can you please help me? Thanks
@AHMED OMERHASSAN I didn't do as good as I thought, but that was on my end because I was so tired from the past weeks that it was hard to focus. Most of it is decision-making. Try to register to receive an email from FSOT. Just last week, they sent me one email asking if I wanted to do a prep session. It was conducted on the 2nd of May, but I believe there should be another one again this year. That would be really useful for you
If possible can you I love a little bit more on the decision making portion? @@PauChica
Thank you for this 😊
Of course.
This is my dream job , will happen for me soon
I appreciate your time and info given in the above video. I plan on taking the test in October, as I need more time to prep myself. I did work overseas as a consultant with the IAEA for a period of 6 months, and did some work at the UN in New York through a country's Permanent Mission. Last October, I graduated with an MA in International Relations from Webster. Currently I am working as a Probation Officer/Facilitator for our local government in the State that I live. However, I am looking for more adventure, I love to travel and can fit in on almost any culture, considering being born in a former communist country and later on escaping at age 17. I know quite a bit about Former Soviet Union and live under USSR. I fluently speak three foreign languages. One of my Webster classmates took it last October and passed it the first time. Based on practice tests they don't seem hard, but the stats show only 30% pass the test. If this doesn't work, I plan on taking the LSAT. I have applied for some positions at the UN, but getting on full time at the UN it's a different ball game. It's all about who you know, not what you know. Sadly.
Thank you again.
How did the test turn out ?
Hi,
I didn't take it. Not ready, yet.
@@djaloshi69 ok good luck
Having taken and passed the FSOT seven times, this change just moved the FSO selection process further to the black box that is the QEP. I'm convinced that FSOT performance has very little bearing on whether you are selected as a candidate or not to move forward to the oral assessment. The whole process really should be more transparent.
You are not alone in this perspective.
Agree. It is also a trend of lowering the standard to obscure the real picture. It is like reducing crime by changing the definition of crime. What was a crime last week, is no longer a crime now so they can now claim they have reduced crime 😊 - sad really.
Thanks bro
Hey there, great video! Question, is there a study guide I can purchase or get my hands on?
I highly suggest this: fsocompass.com/ref/2/
@@RobJoswiakthank you so much! I saw one on Amazon but this one looks better for sure. I was just in DC this past week, walked up and down embassy row and it was there I decided to change my stars and try to go into the FS. Just getting all the facts still.
If there’s ever a time where I can pick your brain with some questions I’d be forever grateful. Do you ever get requests to do calls/Q &As?
@@BryanCathey email me from my website www.robjoswiak.com
Hello I just did the test and got 110.51 I dont know if thats good or bad, any tips ?
I can't speak to any of that. I would search online for groups (reddit, etc.) tracking all of that. Good luck to you.
How was the test?
@@big-z2582
A lot of questions here and there it was pretty interesting experience.
Unfortunately I didn’t get approved but I totally recommend to try again.
Hello if you mind me asking, so from 2010-2015 where were you working at? Anything in government to help for the FSOT?

Thanks for the info. Do the narratives need to be submitted during the application process, before the test, or after you’ve taken the test?
It should tell you when you log in and put all your information in.
I just went through the process and personal narratives are required before you schedule your exam
What degree do you recommend for a person wanting to be a FSO? I’m currently a criminal justice major.
There is no one magic degree. The Foreign Service includes people from all education backgrounds, degrees, and walks of life.
If you are a criminal justice major, you may want to look into Diplomatic Security.
careers.state.gov/career-paths/worldwide-foreign-service/specialist/law-enforcement-and-security/diplomatic-security-special-agent/
may want to switch to international relations
I have so many questions about what life will be like as FSO. Like, what happens to my wife and baby? Can FSOs use cannabis? Can my wife continue her work as a cannabis researcher? Do they travel with me to my first post? If they assign me to a post I don't want, can i decline or am I obligated (like military service)? When serving overseas, can you leave the embassy/consulate and visit the locals?
Once i know tha Foreign services is what i wanna do, I'll take that test.

Thanks for this video, Rob. I was curious, as an undergraduate pursuing a political science degree, what sort of experience _should_ I have if I do pass the FSOT and move on to the interview process? I am a little misguided in this realm.
The foreign service has people from all backgrounds. One common thread many of us have is that we did work, serve, and/ or live overseas at some point before entering the FS. Good luck!
@@RobJoswiak Noted. Thank you for your reply.
Hello … they say they accept up to 59 years old, but average age is 27. I am 50, is there a chance ?
Absolutely! You have to be a little more expedient about your application but yes. You're fine.
Wow ! Great to know !! My dream job ❤
Hi
Can I take the FSOT right after doing my bachelor’s?
Thank you!
Yes. In fact, you don't even need a degree while they obviously do help.

@@RobJoswiak That’s great!
Would please tell me the highest-ranked/division position someone can go to after passing FSOT?
Thanks again!
@@shujayethossain6554 I don't understand your question.
@@RobJoswiak Sorry! FSOT has many career tracks ranging from consular to public diplomacy. I will finish my bachelor’s in a year and I’d like to apply for a foreign service career track that is the most powerful and pays a very high salary at the entry-level. Which career track and position that could be? Or is the job placement random?
Also, after successfully passing the FSOT, will I be given any certificate which I can submit to graduate schools?
Thank you!
@@shujayethossain6554 study this guide. It will answer all of your questions.
