People forget how good Barnes was I’d say he was in the World’s top 3 players in club football around this time

Brian Moore was such a great commentator. I miss his voice. He has no equals.

Totally agree, His passion for the game and his knowledge made him the best commentator I've ever heard. Like you said he has no equals. There will never be a commentator that will ever come close to Brian Moore. He created such a good atmosphere when commentating. One bit of commentary that will always stick in my mind is when Michael Owen scored that "Wonderful Goal" against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup. It still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up even after all these years. Top bloke, should have got a knighthood in my opinion!!

denzil4 Totally agree with you. I don't know how he did it but so often his voice would increase with excitement and it was almost poetry at times like he knew something was going to happen before it did. The Michael Owen commentary is amazing, his voice actually breaks with the excitement and joy at what he witnessed, no pre planned rubbish like other commentators. Just a genuine football man who loved football at ALL levels and supported Gillingham.

Chris Knight Thanks for the message. You've got it spot on there the man was a genius. And yes he supported Gillingham, I think he was a director at the club. I watch alot of old games on youtube from the 70's and 80's and his commentary is brilliant. One of the true greats !!! cheers.

@@charliechaz1982 great commentator...I think Barry Davies ranks very highly too.... no pre planned waffle..from the heart and captured the moment in a football game brilliantly... saying the right thing and the right amount of words.... they also stayed quiet for a second or two to let the sound of crowds reaction paint the picture....

Blimey, I can remember exactly jumping up & punching the air when Peter Reid scored at 16:54 - can't believe that was 25 years ago. Where the fuck did that time go...

On the opening day Aug 19th Granada showed both the Manchester United v Arsenal & the Liverpool v Manchester City, that Liverpool game was the first TV commentary for Clive Tydlesley. I know they showed both games because I was on holiday and watched them in bed in Llandudno. Northern Wales picked up Granada rather than HTV Wales.

Mark Bunn Hiya, Mark. Do you mean shown live? I thought back then we only got 1 live game on a Sunday and maybe the occasional midweek match? Also, weren't those games played on a Saturday, i didn't think they ever broadcast live matches with 3pm kick offs?

Why is your 1990-91 review blocked by the premier league? It didn't exist in 1991! You show European football in your other years, why are uefa so fussy about this one?

    • @YeOldeFootballChannel
      @YeOldeFootballChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+dublinbrazilianblue2 I have checked which part is blocked, and it is the second goal of Manchester United against Barcelona in the ECWC final. Funny enough, I got that video from TH-cam, and it is not blocked! And the Premier League? A goal of Arsenal vs Manchester United (right at the very end of the video!). Complete idiots.

FootballGaffesGalore I can’t see why the premier league would block a goal from the football league. It has nothing to do with them surely?? They must have too much time on their hands!!

20:20 "The new regime off to a great start" that was a little confusing. Took me a couple of minutes to realize it was when that charlatan Knighton was on the pitch doing keep ups! Love the video!

23:53 - such an amazing goal, and then totally undersold right after by the commentator! 😲
There was great football played back then. These guys were what you wanted your local side to look like - no matter where you were from. These guys were the yardstick.
And being from Ireland, we really had some of the top players in the top teams in Div 1 back then! Liverpool's squad was legendary back then - Barnes, Rush, Hansen, Daglish, Beardsley, Nicholl, Grobbelaar, Steve McMahon - but not least Steve Staunton, Ronnie Whelan, Ray Houghton, and Aldo! John Aldridge. All did so well for the Republic of Ireland at the World Cup, to get to the quarters at the end of this same season at Italia 90.
Great crowd reactions too back then. Really meant the world to the crowd. 🙏
Thanks for the upload, well documented! Good channel, easy sub...

28:37 - Jeff Hopkins scores one of the all-time great goals.
    39:37 - A nicely worked free-kick
43:25 - Quick thinking by Gary Crosby
1:30:15 - Frankie Bunn scored 6 goals for Oldham - the record for the most goals scored by one player in a League Cup game.

That's ridiculous, will you be putting it up again without those 2 goals? I really enjoy these videos especially this era as it's when I got into the game. I noticed there's a couple of live games featuring Man United missing, a 1-0 win against Forest in November & 2-0 defeat at Norwich in January.

+dublinbrazilianblue2 I will think if I bother uploading again the entire video minus two goals. I hope UEFA and Premier League can change their opinion.

+lee chipper 89 was a very poignant year for us and I always feel that the terrible tragedy at Hillsborough knocked the stuffings out of the club for many years while the inquest was happening and now that the truth is out we can finally get back to winning the league again and here's some trivia you might like when arsenal took on a manager with 'Arsen' in his name they won the league in his second season when Man City took on a manager with 'Man ci' in his name they won the league in his second season now we have taken on a manager with 'Kop' found in his second name AND his old club also sang 'You'll never walk alone' as well so roll on second season! but roll on Wednesday night first!
