A new world order: the rise of China and the decline of the West

  • While many are already talking about the notion of a shift in power from West to East, a thought-provoking book by author Martin Jacques called When China rules the world takes this even further by proclaiming that China will not only thrive in the 21st century, but will do so at the expense of the United States.

    Yes China assimilated a lot of different ethnic groups into the country, but the majority of the population has always been Han Chinese throughout history. Both Golden Age Han and Tang Dynasty were also ruled by Han Chinese, it wasn't foreign influence which made China great. Ancient China saw itself as more civilized and often called foreign nations barbaric. It even had a tributary system which involved many foreign nations paying tribute and recognize China as the superior nation.

    China, when unified into an empire in 206 BCE instead of embarking into expansionist policies, it built the Great Wall to defend and protect itself. The last 2,000 years showed that China, being the most powerful and dominant nation (don't even think of Romans, the Romans could not match with the highly advanced armies of Han China), it pursued the peaceful policies of live and let live.

    Recently in March, China leader Xi visited France and Germany. The welcome from European countries is a clear indication that China's status and peaceful rise policy is now well received in Europe. In comparison, Japan Abe's trip to Europe is not so welcome. I hope US choose the right working partner to build a better world.

      Yea peaceful that China gave the least amount of money when the Philippines had a typhoon.
      Yea peaceful that China fought a war with Vietnam. That is peaceful . Tell that to the dead. Now China is telling everyone that the sea belongs to them?
      I guess Mao murdered 70 million Chinese so a few more million dead won't make any difference.
      LIfe if china is great. I quote,
      The woman who nearly died making your iPad
      Tian Yu worked more than 12 hours a day, six days a week. She had to skip meals to do overtime. Then she threw herself from a fourth-floor window.
      Maybe we won't have any more problems because maybe all the Chinese will jump.

    Ranggath, what you just stated is WHY they will dominate: an isolationist foreign policy only concerned with economic growth.
    America is the opposite, it constantly invades other countries at it's expense and constantly wastes it's wealth on welfare and unproductive economic programs.
    China should be more vocal in pointing this out to America, but unfortunately China is rather soft-spoken in foreign policy, but this is also to protect itself. Very, very wise.

    That's how ancient China used to think about other nations, I'm not saying I agree with them. But the fact so many nations were willing to pay tribute and obey China is testimony to China's influence and strength in Asia. These nations are called tributaries and China often traded with them, helped these nations get along with each other and even gave military aid when needed. Korea for example was rescued by Ming China from 2 Japanese invasions during the 1500s.

  • @BigOChunk

    Ancient China was among the most advanced in the world and has been a superpower in Asia a very long time, that is a fact. It's also a fact China used to much ahead of Europe in science, mathematics, engineering and many things which builds our modern civilization, this was even said by many Western historians. Why don't you present some factual evidence to argue with mine instead of keep claiming I don't know much about history? Is it because you can't find any?

    What is the West? As far as I'm concern it began with the British Colonial empire, which included colonies in Africa, Canada, The North American Colonies, New Zealand, Australia and India . British colonies one by gained independence from the British. Even at the height of the British Empire, Imperial Manchu China had the world's largest economy. British had nothing to trade with China, leading to Opium Wars. US Hegemony was just a fluke of history that lasted less than a century. China's longest dynasties lasted 400 years.

    • @fc1280
      @fc1280 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I am not sure if I understand what you mean. The "West" started with Ancient Greece, which produced an impressive amount of science that was shared with the East all the way to India. Then after Greece, there was Rome, and then the Byzantine Empire (which was Greek, not Eastern), and then the rise of Western Europe in the 1400s and beyond. I agree that it wasn't until more recent times that the West had such lopsided power in the world, but you speak as if the West had nothing of substance before the 1600s and that China ruled over everyone before that point. Neither is an accurate point to make, and it is far too commonly repeated by uneducated masses of people who aren't really thinking about what the economic experts mean when saying "China is returning to a place of power".

      China was the producer of Silk, of fine Porcelain, which people to this day still call "Fine China". No matter how the common people around the world argue, officially China has been recognized as the originator of the Magnetic Compass, of Paper (different than Egyptian Papyrus), of Gun powder and of earliest Movable Printing. But lets not even focus on these four innovations.

    Lol, the Indian influence is nothing compared to Chinese influence in Asia and also explain why it's not more advanced than Europe? Roman Empire was powerful but it can't match the military might and technological advantage of Han China which existed around the same period. China's navy for example had massive warships called Louchan which can hold 800 troops, it was designed for long range range attacks and had good protection too. The Roman warships are like childrens toys in comparison.

    The problem is that we don't make many of our own goods here anymore. Go into a Target -- almost everything from pens to furniture to dog toys and even some brands of dog food -- is made in China. Since so many corporations have closed factories and shut down infrastructure here, it's all over there in China so even if we decided all of a sudden that we want to "buy American", there wouldn't be much to buy... and it's way too expensive now for corporations to move factories back to the US.

    Not sure about that. China can easily go into several traps that will stop their growth for a long time. One is the "low earning trap". Its not easy for them to go over from a low income export economy to a economy where people start spending and earn more. In that periode, they will loose a lot of their export. Another might be a economic situation similar to the japanese with a deflationary situation for decades. It will be interesting.

    I will be happy if one day Chinese is a respectful country. Just see how defensive the Chinese act when anyone says something different from their textbook of Chinese culture. It is the reaction of neither a powerful nor a respectful country.

      inferno0020-- Yes, and the west is respectful when its corporations have sent out their greedy tendrils to exploit what have been the traditionally 'colonized' countries: the African nations, South American nations, and China itself. Strange how your myopia stops you from seeing how the last few centuries the west has subjugated so many of the indigenous people of so many parts of the world, partaken in the slave trade (the American blacks is just a small example), exploited China (ie: millions upon millions of one-of-a-kind art objects/artifacts taken/pirated out of China; managed to get 20 million of its citizens hooked on opium during a time in which its was semi-colonized by 7 different outside nations---and you wonder why China is suspicious of so many western nations; etc. etc. etc.). Its the West's industrialized pollution in the past century and a half that pushed the world ozone depletion to the levels that its at ( and yes, China, along with other developing nations, and continued support from the western nations are putting the final nails in our collective coffins, etc. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what the 'Western' nations have offered up to the world. Yes, China has its issues, but from what view point do you judge 'RESPECT'. Nuff said.

    Why do these posts always lead to hateful trash talk and stupidity? If China has yet more wisdom to share with the world what's the problem? Our species as a whole has plenty of room for improvement and no right to rest on our record to date whatever our histories!Surely it's time to stop hiding behind out dated and destructive 'masks, and just open our minds and our futures to trying to simply do better for everyone! We are all the same, why is this so hard to embrace and celebrate!

    Japan hasn't been the most peaceful of people... Nor is North Korea or the History of China. Mao was a very violent man fighting several wars with several neighbors. It is the human condition to be violent... not just an American or "Western" condition. I also don't agree with the Iraq war. Afghanistan was a justifiable war. No war should be fought into perpetuity which is another problem. Just War Theory is another "Western" invention which addresses many of the problems with war.

    I concur, the most amazing thing is that pretty well everything thats happening geopolitically 2day is foretold/predicted in the bible; An example of this is that we ar warned that in the last days the Kings of the east(China is a nation of tribes/kings) shall amass an army numbering 200 million..... In the mid 90's the chairman of china stated if push comes to shove China could field an army of 206 million troops.

    China is poised on demographic cliff just like Japan was in 1990. The one child policy and their massive gains in longevity have completely distored the population. That will play out over the next 10 years in a big way.

    • @BroccoliBeefed
      @BroccoliBeefed 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will Hart , There is no such word as distored. What do you mean? Also, the reason the one child policy was implemented is because they like to fuck too much. Fucking creates children -- overpopulation is not cute or pleasant. They don't have a lot of land like countries such as the USA or Australia. It's a very small island by comparison with tons of people on it. Have you ever been to the Far East? I have. In Japan you feel like an ant in a huge colony.... Way too many people.

      +BroccoliBeefed ...China doesn't have a lot of land like the countries such as USA? China's land mass is BIGGER than USA dude. China is not an island, China is the third largest country by land mass in the world, after Russia and Canada, ahead of USA, dumb.

    U donot know chinese culture. In china culture I trust others for the DAO and DE. DE mean "moral" in english word. In china culture, we trust anyone including even our enemy. I trust you because I have DE and believe you have too. So a famous words is that: we can live peacefully together although we have still different thinking.

    I agree Ancient Greece was an advanced civilization, whether it matched Han dynasty China is debatable. It would lose military a confrontation against Han China though. You probably know Attila the Hun for conquering Europe and destroying the Romans who were famous for their military. Guess what, there's good evidence to believe the Huns are originally the powerful Xiongnu Empire North of China which was defeated by the Han Chinese. Maybe that'll give you an idea of the might of Han China.

    There is much that the West can learn from the PRC, some of it relates to ancient China, but most of the lessons come from the post 1949 era. The PRC has made considerable progress in destroying feudal relations.

    I am Portuguese and someone who is very much into china and want to live and work there hopefully very soon so I am very pro china but you say the west only took over from the 1700's well I would agree with you in the sense that as a region the west did start to take over around then but individually western countries already had global empires before that. The Portuguese were the first european and therefore western power to establish a global empire when it all started in 1498
