    I really appreciate the bit about the uneven surface. When you are on flat you can tune the rebound placing more weight on the front, the truck actually offer a spring effect as the truck is forced to go straight from your own weight, it is like that distributing your weight you decide how much rebound to have instead of having a spring or a bushing opposing the same force all the time. I would call it "gravity rebound" just to identify it. That's the reason why on an uneven surface it messed up the turning, it isn't because is extremely loose, but it is because the "gravity" rebound force it to turn instead of getting back to the center. ..I never tried it in a bowl (also I'm very basic riding bowls) and I didn't expect it to be so good as when you lose speed on the vert you will have zero "gravity " robound. But you made clear that is not going to be an issue at all. Thanks for testing it hard, I love to see surfskating mixed with other styles. I believe that this is the future of surfkating, it can benefit a lot from other riding style and technologies, as well as other styles can benefit from the surfskating tech and training.

      Thanks for his really insightful comment and your thoughts on the future of surfskating! Your channel was one of the first I started watching when I got into surfskating so it means a lot to me! I am going to try to be bold enough to try the 7 foot roll-in again staying front foot heavy as you suggest and see how it goes.

      @@MarktheLandlockedSurfer really? such a small world youtube. Try an angle riser on the big deck to inprove the leaning of the curfboard and use a rkp as back truck, it could become awesome. I never try as I don't have the truck

    I put these trucks on an old carver deck that was really stiff(w/some mild concave and rocker) and boom! magic. The mechanism, pivoting off tail with little resistance from forward wheels became enhanced with more direct feedback. It feels amazing with backfoot base and light pressure swinging front foot like surfing. I tried it on a fancy(no name) deck with a lot of flex and it's like the two cancelled each other out. It's been the best setup for a real surf trim feel.

    I'm on my third day of using Curfboard trucks (thanks for the discount code!). I have mostly ridden Smoothstar and your comments about the different movement required to drive the curfboard were spot on - and really useful.
    The bowl I'm riding today is pretty uneven with ruts and rough patches. The trucks get knocked sideways easily, however at anything above very slow speeds they straighten up without causing a problem now that I have got used to the feel of the mini wobble.
    Lots of fun.

    Seriously. The amount of tricks you're landing is mind boggling! It's really nice to watch. And off course nice review 😉. One nuance I was considering is that I feel that in surfing some people are 'frontfoot' heavy and they are using the front foot more to generate speed than others. It could be that this influences the way they experience these trucks.

  • @victortee2172
    @victortee2172 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bought a set of these trucks based on this review. I have used a waterborne up until now, and wanted something that is LOW and LIGHT for dropping in and standard skate tricks. It fits the bill for that, and my setup is significantly faster now too.
    These are loooooooose! I'm still sketched when dropping in and even though the trucks don't technically jacknife, I have spun out multiple times; weight balance between feet helps prevent this.
    Low lean angle + tight turning radius = more significant turning with less lean input. This is a very sensitive setup especially at speed (hence my spin outs), tuning is possible with wedge blocks and rear truck tightness, expect to spend some time tinkering.
    I have conditioned myself to manual over any sharp transitions, and warn anyone that rides the board to do the same. This is a major issue as the board will veer over those transitions and even over compound bowl transitions like hips and depth transitions. Simple bowls are fine, complex bowls take more planning.

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, now that winter is over and I am using it more outdoors, I am noticing that veering issue on the more complex parks versus the indoor one I had been using over the winter. You either need to hit the drop straight on or as you said do a little manual. As for dropping in, it is actually less problematic because as soon as you slam the wheels down they go straight. Something that would be good to improve in future iterations.

      It is a very fun board to have in the quiver. And if learning to do carve grinds maybe the best for that task.

  • @peters219
    @peters219 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    When you surf you don't lean until you're into the face of the wave or setting heavily off the bottom. The lean on other surfskates while on flat ground leads to bad habits surfing. You don't waggle on a surfboard either, which is a tendency I see a lot of surfskaters do that is bad form on a surfboard. This board's pivot off the tail with uninterrupted motion on the front is exactly like a surfboard. It lets you practice that trimline motion for speed and then you only lean on and into a bank. It's really good for surf training. I just switched off other surfskate brands because of these advantages. If you're trying to get better surfing, some surfskate tendencies can translate to bad form or hangups surfing. Practice smooth steady trimming that project forward, not waggles, and leans on a bank while opening/squaring hips and using front arm as pivot point.

    Great video again! I'm unlikely to cheat on my Yow anytime soon, but I love the analysis and sweet skate footage nonetheless! BTW, I know we were talking about wheels before, I highly recommend you try the Seismic Hot Spots for flatland and street (can't comment on park as I suck at that). Super high rebound and roll speed with a predictable slide.

    Regarding the board you put together, what size and model is the Zenit deck you put on this board. I don’t do street skate tricks, I ride the bowl and do a lot of grinds, slides, and starting practicing some front side airs. Do you think this deck could be beneficial for my riding style since it has the double tail?

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is the deck I used: zenitboards.com/products/morning-wood-v3 - Based on your style as described, you don't need a nose with kick, but if you start progressing more with airs especially, it is helpful to have that lift up front to push against when you are levelling your board out after popping off the lip. What I loved about this deck is that it is ultra light, so it maintains close to the weight of the original Wave SE complete, but it still seems very strong so far.

    • @Quickrex
      @Quickrex 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@androuil No problem. I bought the stubby like 10 years ago so bushings could have changed since then (probably) the bushing that came with the board is very stiff but the thing with the revenge truck is that it more difficult to find some bushings say like double cones, they are definitely restrictive (no room for high bushings with meat on them). But loosen the kingpin nut so the front truck becomes super loos. The wheels are useless. So get some that have some rebound around 65mm, higher than that and you will be needing risers, here we talking every day use. Go check Surfskate Love her on TH-cam , he explains what works. I like Orangatang fat free and love handles both 65mm and Alva Conical 59mm, 88A for skateparks and bowl they are pretty dame cool and fast too. Priority no 1 loosen the truck until you feel comfortable then some more when you progress. Then over time you can go with carver CX or the YOW Meraki. AliExpress sells both 25-50$. Same thing functionality wise, the quality okay but again not exactly. Dame Chinese copy cat’s. The globe Stubby was for a very long time my go to everything board. So light and nimble yet so fat and stable. Good choice.

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great question. I can think of one big advantage: This board provides the looseness of some of the other boards but without the risk of "jackknifing" (when you bottom out the front of the board, usually causing you to go flying). It is also pretty easy to pump. I do wonder if it might feel a bit out of control if learning to ride transition on it and riding at slower speeds - you know how a bike feels more wobbly when it is going slow instead of fast? Not sure if that helps but I'll update when my students get a chance to try it.

    Thank you Mark for detailed review. Can you tell me how it feel for regular pushing (for commuting). Is it stable enough if I will just ride by pushing (both foots)? How good it will be if I use LDP pumping style similar I do on GBomb longboard?

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This board pumps very easily on the sidewalk because it has less resistance but you can kick push it easily too if you want since it is really low to the ground compared to other surfskates. I don't really have any LDP experience so can't answer your question there and LDP pumping style.

    Regarding bowl riding, aside from weight and lack of king pin, does it beat CX in any other way? I love riding CX in bowls, I’m not at level to grind coping but am improving and curious if there’s a better option. So far I find CX more fun than C7, YOW, Waterborne for this purpose. Is it stable like CX?

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you see stability as a positive, CX or regular skateboard truck would be more stable and maybe a better option for learning. But if you want to progress past learning and into mastering, I found that these hug the walls of the bowl no matter what angle you approach from. You can go straight up the wall and carve back down without kick turning. They are so nimble in tight spaces. They are therefore better at maintaining speed even if you take a bad trajectory. I can’t explain why, but my flow in the bowl with these trucks just feels effortless. I wouldn’t have believed it until I tried it.

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

      It never happened! On a flat surface they always straighten out. So dropping in and landing airs they always return to centre. It was only here. I am now using this board on rough cobble streets and it is fine as well so it doesn't seem to be that big of an issue in the big picture.

      Slide is one of the few brands I haven't had a chance to test out. Also, I will point out that once I added risers on the new deck the board was able to lean a little more, so it is kind of a tradeoff between having a board that is low to the ground and that leans deeply.

    Thanks for the informative review - the trucks look really interesting. According to their website "At higher speeds, the truck becomes more stable and prevents speed wobbles". Did you find this to be the case? I sometimes struggle with speed wobbles when trying to push my speed in bigger bowls, although in my case it's probably due to poor technique!

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel it is like a bike, how when you try to pedal excruciatingly slow, it feels wobbly and the faster you go the more stable it feels. I never had issues with the trucks twisting over the uneven surfaces at faster speeds, like when charging up that vert wall. A general rule to help you with speed wobbles though: As long as you are keeping your board slightly on rail it can’t wobble, it is only if you are straight lining it. Lessons learned from catching edges snowboarding. Alway keep a little edge pressure and you are good!

      By the looks of it looks like a bowl pool truck only all right. I prefer smoothstar over the YOW in skateparks bowls, when we are talking about transition, sometimes the YOW is sending you flying facedown. But I'm using the S4 and I'm 75 kgs so maybe that's why. But the smoothstar is dead on the flat's if you compare it with the YOW in my opinion. So I should probably get hold of a YOW S5. It's easier to get higher in the bowl with less effort using the YOW. But I prefer the smooth flattish tight turn of the smoothstar. So yes it is really marginal 1a 1B. I'm experimenting with a electric mellow drive and the Yoface 34 and that's is sick in a Bowl, the closest thing to surfing on land. I'm aware of bustin boards making their own Evo using the Yoface outline just shorter length, not as fast as the mellows +40 km/hrs. I know it's a little overkill and expensive but I don't care about fancy cars. I like hammering around in bowls and then go surfing to see if something is improving.
