I read an interview that Phelps gave and he said that he sung with the Soul Stirrers on the SAR recording of Lead Me To Calvary. Jimmy Outler sung lead, Sam Cooke is singing the 1st tenor, and Phelps is the 2nd tenor. He also said that he led the song on the B side, Mother Don't Worry About Me. I happen to have that 45. I always thought it was Outler on the lead but Phelps said that he is leading and now I can hear the difference. He even put in a nice Sam Cooke yodel. I'll try to post it soon.
@sharontherun I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. James Phelps. I knew that he had sung with the Soul Stirrers and only discovered a few months ago that I had him singing with them. I hadn't heard of The Clefs Of Calvary until that same interview I read. I found this post and became an instant fan. He will truly be missed.
I grew up listening to Paul Foster...and all that I heard lead me to explore the early Soul Stirrers and no matter who the alternate lead or the songs he made classic with his heart felt and true gospel style , He stands forever as a true giant in gospel quartets...or any gospel or spiritual music...
I would like for the sons of the Clefs of Calvary to consider putting together a next generation Clefs of Calvary group. My father Ezell Wilkins sang with the group, he and I would sing these songs together from time to time, this made him glow with pride and joy until the day he died. The Clefs of Calvary are a true part of gospel history. So if any of the children of the Clefs of Calvary were genetically blessed with music ability vocally or instrumentally, pls leave a comment.
These unsung singers are some of the best singers in the world, equal to any!
