  • Finnish electric locomotive Sr1
Sr1 is the first electric locomotive of Finland. Maximum speed is 140 km/h. It has continous power rating of 3100 kW, one hour output of 3280 kW and unoffical power rating (1500V wagon electricity counted too) of about 5000 kW. Electric supply is 25 kV 50 Hz ac overhead wire. Traction motors are 4 DC /820 kW/motor (offical), controlled by Strömberg-manufactured (former Finnish company, nowadays part of ABB) thyristor power rectifier drive.
It was ordered from USSR, mainly because of political reasons.
It is manufactured in Novochserkassk Electric Locomotive Works, former USSR.
First locomotives were delivered on year 1973. Last production model from factory was delivered on 1985.
Two additional locomotives were built at the Hyvinkää Machine Workshop in 1993 and 1995, number 3111 from spare parts and number 3112 from the original prototype locomotive (number 3000) that was never used.
The locomotives originally carried a dark red livery, with white stripes around and below the cab windows. The stripes were later replaced with yellow warning panels (resembling stylished wings) below the cab windows. From the early 1990s onwards this livery has been replaced by a white livery with red stripes. The nicknames for these locomotives are "Siperian susi" (Wolf of Siberia; it comes from the typical sound of Sr1, when it passes you can heard the "wolf crying" ; in Finnish slang "susi" can also mean a poorly manufactured object.
Two Sr1 class locomotives have been damaged beoynd repair, number 3048 in an accident in Jokela in 1996 and number 3089 in an accident in Jyväskylä in 1998.
There is a total 110 Sr1-class locomotives in service today.

Sr1 is actually a great BoBo loco. It is the only one in "western world" as a main line export loco from Soviet Union. It has done almost 50 years work in many conditions of arctic Finland. I spent one night (6...7 hours) from Tampere to Oulu when it took a Pullman night train of 1000 tn and some 20 cars there. I was inside in the cabin and loco and and also once outside when it was waiting the opposite direction train to pass. It waited that train in the middle of a deep forest and 50...80 cm snow in total darkness (like 7:10...7:30). I took some fresh air outside and checked the sand pipes to be open before it started again with the 1000 tn night train from slippery rails full of snow because snowy winds and waited longer than expected. Yes...it is not the most modern, energy efficient, ergonomic and technically advanced one but...it has Knorr brakes, Skoda bogies and Finnish (Stromberg/ABB) electronics and some other Finnish parts.

This locomotive seemed to me very similar to the Soviet VL60 series, and this is a real ES40 locomotive developed in the USSR specifically for Finland.

@markskise These were built some 30-40 years ago in the former Soviet Union, although these feature many Finnish made parts as well.

Beautiful!!! I hope to get over there in a year's time to ride this stuff before any attempted "modernisation" with tinted windowed crap! PLEASE if any new rolling stock, preserve the CLEAR windows and do NOT fall for that international virus that has damaged most of the beauty of the trains around the planet by using window tinting! (And of course KEEP the electrification)!!!

I shall try again! (For some reason on some clips, I can't seem to add postings here on TH-cam)! Beautifl trains! I hope to ride next year. PLEASE do NOT "modernise" with window tinting (an international virus that has ruined many railways) and do keep the electrification! Absolutely beautiful rolling stock that is disappearing with many new European "modernisation" projects. This is Europe as I know it! Don't allow such to be destroyed!!! Last bastion of beauty! Thanks.

Ootko koskaan muuten nähny, että jotain intercityä on vedetty Sr2:silla ´Kajaani-Kouvola radalla? Oulu - Helsinki välillä en oo ikinä nähny Sr1:stä vetävän intercityä.
