I worked as loss prevention at a retail store years back. A good friend came to visit me, they shopped around and ended up going into the fitting rooms. On their way in they dropped a small item without realizing, and another customer in the fitting rooms noticed and grabbed it (presumably stole it). On their way out my friend realized they were missing an item and had a panic attack. When they came out they explained what they thought happened, showed the inside of their small bag, everything they could think of. The fitting rooms worker (against store policy) told them they stole and was very confrontational. All of the workers were alerted over the radios of the "theft". My friend got in line to buy the things they wanted but everyone kept staring at them so they eventually just set down the items and left while trying not to visibly panic. I felt so awful. I knew how bad things looked for them but know 1000% they didn't/wouldn't have stolen anything, and if I spoke up for them I could've lost my job. HI ANA! I have a relatively important question for you.❓⁉️❓ What is the best way to get in touch with you, since YT still insists on not resurrecting the IM function???
Recently I went into a changing room with 4 items and needed a smaller size in 2 of the items so my boyfriend asked if he could exchange them with other ones and the attendant said yes so he went and came back but there was no smaller size in one of them so I only got 1 item back and it made me do a mini panic after trying everything on when I realised I had to leave with only 3 items and a label that said I had 4 but nothing happened so it was very anticlimactic but I was scared
I work in retail and we aren’t allowed to check bags, we can ask for the item back or for them to show us their bags. But if they refuse we can’t prevent them from leaving either. Also, I watch my coworkers every day let people who set off the security alarm just keep walking out of the store and do nothing about it. I swear mall products are basically free at this point. My managers literally watched this chick the other day walk in with an empty paper bag and walk out with it unfolded and full and since no one saw it directly nothing happened and she just left, probably togo empty the bag and do it again at another store.
Hot topic had a smart way of dealing with this; limit the amount of clothes a customer is allowed in the fitting room, and the employee who is opening the door for you counts the items with the customer and then shouts to the other reps on the floor the amount the customer has. I.e. “hi, you need the fitting room? Ok and it looks like you have 4 items, unfortunately we have a 3 item limit. If you want I can hold onto this while you try on the rest and when you’re done, hand the merchandise back and we can start a new process if you saw something else that you wanted to try on.” Customer would either say put it back or hold it, then through out the store you hear “3” being called. The other employees have to say it back to confirm the number so we all are on the same page in case I’m helping someone else and another employee started helping the customer trying on merch. Edit: or at least that was procedure back when I worked there 8 years ago 😂(god I’m old 😢)
My anger issues would make this so much worse. I'm autistic so I take rules and honesty very seriously. While I may miscount, there's no way somebody's gonna accuse me of taking something when I know I didn't. Especially when there's no way I could (tight clothes, tiny purse). I'd stand there and be like "Bring the fuckin manager. I'll empty this bag and strip in front of y'all. Fuck you for not believing me when I clearly did not take anything. DO IT. NOW. CALL.. OR SHOULD I CALL FOR YOU!?" I'm the nicest most patient person when it comes to retail personnel, but press me on my hard set mental rules and we're gonna have a problem. 😤
And hating isn't yours. I think instead of being an asshole, you should just keep your mouth shut. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all
In retail you aren’t allowed to check people’s bags if she checked your bag she should be fired because you could falsely accuse someone and it would be a whole thing and you could possibly be sued

They thought I stole because i found an earring wrapper in the change room and gave it to them to let them know I found it…
wow we don't have this item counting where i'm from😭 i never even considered people could steal while in changing rooms
Daaaaaaamn….never been jealous of jeans before…
So that’s why they asks how many items u have.. just learned something new
Good thing at Ross u put ur items up and THEY count it and give u a number
They cannot check your purse unless a police officer has a specific search warrant, I hate workers that entitle themselves so much they give themselves an imaginary promotion, sometimes its just an item and you have to let it go, not everyone is gonna need that one thing that got stolen (someone that’s had plenty of cashiering experience)
If im going to steal im not going to use a dressing room
This is why the employees need to count themsleves!! Sometimes ppl miscount but if the employee miscounts then it’s not on the customer!!
The *employee* should have counted them, someone can say they have 4 while actually having 5 and REALLY steal something
I would just tell her she's crazy and leave 😂
This is why I count in front of them
I have to ask where are the skirts from😢
Okay, but where can I buy those skirts??
Thats on you tho the employee shouldve counted it herself
HI ANA! I have a relatively important question for you.❓⁉️❓ What is the best way to get in touch with you, since YT still insists on not resurrecting the IM function???
That’s why they count them for you
ive never seen any retail worker actually care that much but on a separate note, why are all the fitting rooms still closed?
But if the count have to be correct then the staff have to count it themselves. If they don’t count it later on they normally not check it.
Do they still do this when u try on stuff? Haven’t tried anything on since pandemic
i will buy 0 from a store that treats customers like this
Wait cause where you get that skirt r from? What store?
I work in retail and we aren’t allowed to check bags, we can ask for the item back or for them to show us their bags. But if they refuse we can’t prevent them from leaving either. Also, I watch my coworkers every day let people who set off the security alarm just keep walking out of the store and do nothing about it. I swear mall products are basically free at this point. My managers literally watched this chick the other day walk in with an empty paper bag and walk out with it unfolded and full and since no one saw it directly nothing happened and she just left, probably togo empty the bag and do it again at another store.
I just want to know what is the name of the store the clothes are SO CUTE!!
Edit: or at least that was procedure back when I worked there 8 years ago 😂(god I’m old 😢)
I'm 36... I always count right!
Places do this? I've never heard of this before
If she wanted to shoplift she coulda said a lower number going in
They just count the items themselves where I’m from
If you let the customer count the items themselves then they could just write down that they had less items than they brought in and easily steal 💀
IS THAT WHY THEY COUNT? I Never figured that out omg
its insane how invasive "security" is in usa
I’ve never had my items counted, has this happened for people?
Acting is NOT your forte honey.
And hating isn't yours. I think instead of being an asshole, you should just keep your mouth shut. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all
and apparently kindness isn’t yours

Damn Im glad that Ive never visited a store with such a policy 😮
Since when did “confront the customer” become the way to do it. We were always trained to wait until the person left and then tell a manager and LP.
It’s giving millennial core😀
This is why people prefer to do online shopping nowadays 😓
In retail you aren’t allowed to check people’s bags if she checked your bag she should be fired because you could falsely accuse someone and it would be a whole thing and you could possibly be sued
Definitely would’ve just left lol
Is this a thing in America? I can literally bring 20 items into a changing room here in Norway and no one cares. The only thing that is common is that we leave our bags/purses close to the entrance
I have never been to a store in my country where they count the items, it just feels like you are assuming I would steal otherwise, which is rude. When I have been to other countries, I have been i stores that count. I'm always very worried that something like this will happen to me
Every place I ever went to no one gave a shit and were going through the motions. This would never happen IME
That bod tho
They just trust you with the amount of clothes? Here they count it themselves
Why don't they set down the items on a table and let the employees count then...?
