    Box Hill is a bucket list destination for me, alas my knees failed before I could get there. Thank you for taking me along with you and your beautiful dogs.

      You should definitely go. Are you aware that there is parking at the top so you can enjoy the trails up there without needing to do some epic climbing? Also a Smith and Western restaurant for a great midday lunch break! Glad you enjoyed the video :-)

      Just this section or the whole NDW? Be prepared for LOTS of mud esp between Gomshall and Ranmore Common

      @@WilderhopeAdventures Just this section for now. We will do the whole of the NDW on different visits.
      Thanks for the mud warning, I'm not looking for to it! Will have to tread carefully.
      Nice work on the video.

    Lovely area Surrey, they do some great sparkling wine at Denbies.

      Sadly it was a little early in the day to stop for a wine tasting...but always good to know it is an option, and a good wine-tasting stop. I love the little river-side pub at Gomshall personally...a good overnighter there

    Evening CJ, stunning part of the trail, especially loved the stepping stones and the natural bench for lunch too! Another quality video of a cracking looking hike. Catch you soon, Ceri and Kat ❤👍☕

      Thanks, I really love this whole section of the North Downs, from Guildford to Merstham. The stepping stones and natural bench area are NT and very popular in summer.

    I remember walking down from Box Hill to the stepping stones with my 3 year old son. He was too tired to walk back up and I had to carry him on my shoulders. That was a killer 😂

      @WilderhopeAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ouch...yeah, can only imagine climbing that hill with a three year old kid on your shoulders. Well done for doing that.

    Hi CJ. I was hoping you were going to mention the Memorial to the B17 crew. This part of the North Downs is a hard slog in places but very worth while for the wonderful views you can get. It is hard to be sure from the brief clip of it in the video, but I think the Bird of Prey was a Kestrel, same as the bird I use as my icon :-))

      Of course...had to mention it...one of the historical highlights of the NDW :

    This part of the trail I know so well. It’s where I grew up! I could tell you about General Montgomery secret bunkers under Reigate fort, High Beeches. There was also a secret rail system that housed used guns that you would have walked over without even knowing it. Fantastic thank you for sharing!

    • @WilderhopeAdventures
      @WilderhopeAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh, please do tell. I love learning about the history of all these places

    • @Andyb2379
      @Andyb2379 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WilderhopeAdventures it’s a very interesting story but under Reigate was a large bunker complex called Under Beeches. The short story is that Monty had is command & control centre down there with a full receiving station on D-day. On June the 6th the radio transmissions were picked up there that the invasion had started & this was relayed to Church hill directly. The Germans knew of this bunker complex & you would have have walked past noticeable bomb creators. Also by the old horse water Fountain the little temple looking building with the mosaic style ceiling if you walk to the edge of the hill you will notice what looks like a train tunnel bricked up. This was a secret rail system that connected to and the beaches bunker system where they used to hide a huge railgun. Are used to take the gun down to the coast at night and fire shots across to France. Early in the morning it will be returned to a secret hiding place and the Germans would send their reconnaissance over but they could never find the exact location of where the gun was hidden. And the beaches was dynamited shut in the late 60s early 70s but apparently it is perfectly preserved underneath the hill to this day.. There was talk about one Day trying to reopen the tunnels to discover more of its secrets inside.

    Beautiful hiking. We love watching these walking paths throughout England, it's so open and very different from most of the forested mountain areas we hike here in the States. L26 and new sub for you!

      Hi there. So glad to hear you are enjoying the videos of the trails in the UK. I know what you mean about the trails in the US although I am from Wyoming which is less trees, lots of rock and wide-open mountain vistas...and I miss it. I appreciate the sub and hope you continue to enjoy the videos. Take care.

    With the propensity to visit golf courses and to wilfully descend from the escarpment before immediately reascending it, the North Downs Way seems to have much in common with The Cotswold Way! That thing with the French...yeah, it might still be going on... my wife, Julie is deeply suspicious - says she thinks they are ‘up to something’ 😂😂. Dogs looking super alert and into the walk here!

    • @WilderhopeAdventures
      @WilderhopeAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha ha...good to know. If or when I do the Cotswold Way I will know what to expect...lots of golf and lots of climbing.
      I think the dogs are as ready to get back out as I am. We had a lot of fun exploring the SE on a roadtrip a couple of weeks back but eager to get out for more.

      @@WilderhopeAdventures - There’s even one - a golf course - on the Dales Way (now there’s a walk, even though I say so myself). However, the guide we had didn’t notify us that it is a former golf course...bereft of life it rests in peace...it has rung down the curtain and gone to join the choir invisible...it is an ex golf course. Of course that meant we were meandering about going ‘where’s this bloody golf course, then?’ for a while before going ‘sod it, this goes to Sedbergh anyway...’ (we were on the right track all along).

      Ha ha...that they are. Although nothing compared to some of the killers I've been up on foreign soil. I have only briefly stopped at the cafe on Reigate Hill but it was never warm enough to stop for long. I was also wanting to catch the train, which I still missed!
