Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! You got to Veil of Maya!!! I love you!! Lukas Magyar, the vocalist, is my cousin, and he is awesome, as is the rest of the band. Most of their stuff is overall way heavier than this, this is way different, a bit of a departure, but still a fun enough song. Songs of theirs you need to do are Outsider or Mikasa. Cheers!!!

I find it really interesting that in most genres a direct rip of a melody like that would be stealing, but in metal there is this understanding of honesty and integrity so we automatically know that they're paying respects. Also as much as I love Iron Maiden, Veil of Maya are far beyond them as far as skill and technique goes so the only way they write that is as a tribute.

I’m going to take this opportunity to suggest a band for you - Cynic.
Dudes are legendary and Veil of Maya got their name from the first song off Cynic’s first album Focus from freakin 1993! Their newer work dropped a lot of the growling but it is consistently brilliant. And you would glam hard on the bassist Sean Malone. I know I’m not the first to suggest Cynic, so you gotta check ‘em out Geebz!

These guys are a new favorite of mine. They have some very neat material that seems to adapt from album to album like a lot of other acts from this genre. This is their latest track and they’ve notably experimented with the simpler radio-friendly formula that you hear from a lot of other bands. It still has the chaotic-yet-resolved signature to it that you’ll find in their repertoire. Check out “Doublespeak” or “Whistleblower” from them sometime. They have an extremely unique and satisfying style IMO.

    • @jermy-6876
      @jermy-6876 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes! Their latest album "False Idol" is my favorite of theirs. (And definitely more prog-y than their recent singles)

Veil of Maya definitely falls under progressive metalcore which can obviously borrow from other genres being progressive in nature. In this case the electronic breaks dip into synthwave which is a somewhat newer genre devoted to recreating 80s sounding synth music.
Edit: also, outrun is also a style of visual art that typically accompanies synthwave

  • @TheChadavis33

Just saw them live with Dance Gavin Dance and Polyphia. They were so goddamn good, I hurt my neck from head banging too hard. Also, they literally sampled a guy doing a reaction to them talking trash and put it in the song “punisher.” Can’t believe it hasn’t caught on reaction channels yet. Be the first!! They took his mockery and made like a top-10 heaviest riff ever groove out of it.

I only passively enjoyed these guys until I saw them live. REALLY tight live act. And to cap it off, they ended with Mikasa, and Spencer from Periphery sang a chunk of it because their band was up next. Great show.

Love the track listen, a rollercoaster for sure. I don't know if it's just me, but does anyone else think Iron Maiden towards the last third of the track?

As Geebz listens to all these songs I've never once heard him say anything like "I think I would like this song less if I knew what their old stuff sounded like, can anyone confirm in the comments that they're worse now?"
This band has made course adjustments on every album further and further from harsh, technical stuff. Aren't metal listeners supposed to be more mentally equipped for when bands experiment away from the expected median?

I'd suggest their song 'Numerical Scheme', if you want to check out their more original sound\style, or 'Codex' if you want to hear lots of cool panned guitar parts that are different 😄

I forgot I have seen them live. They were touring with Asking Alexandria and For All Those Sleeping. For All Those Sleeping stole the show. They were excellent. Asking Alexandria was pretty great too. I can't remember Veil Of Maya at all now though. Tbf it's been 11 years and I went to a ton of shows.

You should listen to Mikasa from veil of maya. The drums alone are complicated.

Definitely wouldn’t be my first choice for Veil of Maya. This is far more simple and commercial compared to their previous albums.

yeah and it fucks. Their older stuff is good but hard to effectively dissect on a first go. Some songs like The Glass Slide and Punisher are pretty straightforward but a lot of it takes listen after listen before it settles.

Yeah, I'm surprised he didn't come across Mikasa first. Big fan of their early work with Brandon but would love to see some False Idol reactions.

This fits in the genre of Progressive Metalcore. Metalcore because of the upbeat that derives from punk/hardcore music. And progressive.. well, you can tell based on the more complex structure and composition. Soundwise this has it's djenty roots.

Great vid Geebs! As for a genre, old industrial and metal bands like Ministry and Fear Factory were fusing metal and techno back in the 80’s and 90’s. Lincoln Park hit more mainstream. If you get a chance listen to the soundtrack for the movie Judgement Night where metal and rap was fused. It’s kinda a one off but a great album.
