Growing up in America did you ever find it challenging identifying yourself mainly as American only vs Asian ? I was born here in the USA but I'm not adopted. My mother is from Vietnam & my father is from Philippines but he grew up in Hawaii. Being that English was the only language my parents spoke to each other - I truly never grasped either of my parents language. Along with that living in community where I live still there was no opportunity for to endure the language of my parents country, along with that English was the dominant language all around town. Therefore I felt a little left out not being bilingual like other Asian people who have an edge with language skills. Thanks for sharing your time line & life story
I definitely identified a lot with the American side growing up here. I also didn't ever get to learn Vietnamese and wasn't immerse in much asian culture until i got to college. That's really cool you have Vietnamese and Filipino parents! I also wish I was bilingual in any language (i know some french and a tiny bit of japanese) i wish I knew vietnamese fluently though. I took french in high school because I knew some people spoke french in vietnam. It's never too late to learn a language! but I understand it's a lot easier if you start when you're super young. Thanks for watching the vid and sharing your story as well!
Hey Carolyn! I don't really know what brought me to this channel, but you seem like a really cool person. Thank you so much for your videos, vulnerabilities, and kindness! Keep up the good work! HUGE FAN!
French was the official language in Vietnam until 1945. Since then English and Russian have become more common. And now, most people can't speak French, I think you can communicate with more people in English. (at least in cities) I think is higher chances of you being adopted in the North than in the South. you look like a typical North Vietnamese. Vietnamese people can have light skin and big eyes.
I recently looked up how many Vietnamese ppl speak French ur was less than 1% lol but o well now I know! And that is very interesting I didn’t know I looked more northern Vietnamese. I didn’t kno what the different looks were. Thank you for sharing!
