Pop!_OS And The COSMIC Desktop. The Best Desktop Linux?

  • I'm taking a quick look at the recently released Pop!_OS 21.04 with their COSMIC desktop. COSMIC is a set of customizations that makes GNOME much more palatable. In fact, Pop!_OS COSMIC might be the best GNOME-based Linux distro. It could even be argued that Pop!_OS might be the best desktop Linux distro period.

      It's cool. I like it quite a bit. I do wish they'd add a "remove decorations" option for when you want to use only tiling. I guess that would defeat that other aspect - I can't remember what it's called where you drag/snap them into tab groups or something. That's cool as well, but I just use tiling and workspaces so will rarely if ever use that tab thing.

    Been using pop as a daily driver for a bit over a year now, its fantastic!
    The tiling is the kicker for me. I'm a programmer, and so often need to have multiple windows open, and switch between them very frequently. I also want to be as keyboard-oriented as possible. However, when I tried some of the WMs like i3, dwm, xmonad and whatever, I just could not do without a full desktop environment. It is way too much work to set up my own system like some of you guys do. I just want something that "just works" out of the box, perhaps with minor tweaks, and using a diy WM is the complete opposite of that.
    I feel that Pop OS contains everything I need and want, and also looks fantastic!
    I also like to recommend it to beginners, as it is very beginner friendly and easy to use, but does not get in your way when you know your way around. Except if you want to do some major tweaking, but at that point you probably don't want to be in a DE.

    I just found this channel recently and absolutely LOVE it, but It broke my heart when you said "If you didn't want to use the dock, you could disable it, I'm not sure why you'd want to do that." If you disable it, you can bring all the same things up by hitting the Super key and using the dash. This frees up the desktop significantly and lets a user bring up the dock on their own terms instead of having it be present even when not being used.
    It really confuses me why so many people want a dock when most people actively use it maybe 1% of the time and it takes up so much space. Dash life is so free!

    • @narwhal4304
      @narwhal4304 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because Pop is still for new users, and new users find it easier to pin most-used applications to the dock, and open them that way. Linux can be customized, but that doesn't mean a distribution should remove features because *some* people wouldn't use it. If you're someone who would disable the dock after installing Pop, why not just install a distribution that uses a tiling window manager?

    What I've always liked about Pop OS (I've been using it since 20.04) is that it doesn't feel like using gnome at all...And I'm a huge fan of tiling window managers, but I got tired of trying stuff and configuring everything myself, I just wanted something with sane default.
    And the integrated tiling with pop shell is amazing. I'm surprised you didn't talk about it, it's the best thing about pop, out of all the features.

  • @berinloritsch
    @berinloritsch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I've been using Pop! OS for a bit now, having come from Windows. I really like it, and one of the primary reasons I chose it is because window tiling is built in to the Cosmic desktop. My only quibble is that I am not a fan of how the tiling algorithm works. After seeing your demos with dwm, awesome, etc I would rather have a very simple stacked layout. There are some keybindings to "fix" where it puts the next window... and that's something I need to learn. That said, the tiling manager does have some issues where it can reserve blank space for a window that is no longer there. But these are the types of things that you can only learn after working with it for a while.

    • @Aemulatius
      @Aemulatius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You have stacked layout in PopOS. It’s actually my favorite! Press super+s, a title bar will show up and everything you open up, opens in a tab.
      And you can navigate through them with super+left|right.

    I'm doing web-based software development and wanted to have a Linux desktop machine because of all the open source development goodness that is easy to install on Linux. It would be great fun to play around with 147 different distros and recompile device drivers from source and all of that, but I don't have time for that. I'm trying to do real work. I don't have time to build my own computer either, and I just wanted to buy something. So I bought a System76 Thelio with PopOS and its great. A good solid out-of-the-box Linux experience. POP is what got me started using the Linux Desktop 'for real'. I had always played around with Linux desktop and it was mostly on my servers, but when it came out as a gaming friendly distro a few years back I was able to switch to it for a while just for general use and it accelerated my learning. Then I caught on to Arco from you and it is a great learning tool, as well as a Linux desktop. Something I think the community needs to work on is a workflow for ultra-wides. This is where it can make sense to have a dock in the middle, and it is also where Windows is great with fancy zones, I have been trying to replicate my Windows setup with tiling WM (I really like q-tile). What I want is to have about 50% in the centre of the screen for a 'focus' area and I use the wings to monitor what I am running. With Fancy Zones on Windows I can shift things around with hot-keys as well as setup for side-by-side. That's why have gone back to a floating WM in Linux but I am not overly happy because I am somewhat messy... Maybe you can figure something out and provide some more content :D

    Please DT do a full customization video on Pop!_OS like the "from noob to poweruser" video you did on Linux Mint, please 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 That video helped me a lot to get into Linux and the terminal and to have fun tweaking the system around. I’d really love to see how you'd tweak Pop!_OS to be a DT style fantastic looking daily driver, what essential terminal application you'd install and so on … Pop!_OS DT Edition

    I tried the top 6 distros from distrowatch on a HP laptop with a external Dell Monitor .. Pop! OS was the only one that had a stable external screen .. and I REALLY tried to make the others work. On some the detect monitor never worked.. on others the resolution wouldn't stick or even gave me an odd screen that was like a smaller resolution on a background of a larger resolution.. I am sure it's me, and if I had done something I might have gotten one of the others to do what it was supposed to.. but I don't need to now.

    Hey DT, I had a small question (TL;DR at the end) phrased in a horrible way that takes like a hundred or so words more than it should but I like to be descriptive.
    So... I know it's not yet possible for them to push the top notifications and everything into the dock perhaps but is it possible for us as end users to just have whatever is in the dock up in the top bar? Or is there a distro that does it? So to explain it better...
    Here's the thing. I am currently a Windows user and before this I was a MacOS user for almost a decade. I switched over to Windows this year as Macs have become way too costly, but I have hated Windows ever since I have used it and am planning to switch to Linux. In Windows I have realized that I barely ever use the dock in itself except to see what apps are already running or to check my battery. To run an app, even if it's on the dock I find it faster to press super and search it and press enter than to move my hand away from keyboard and click it with a trackpad.
    TLDR what my question was - is there a distro that does not have a dock at all, has the super key search thing and shows the running apps in the top bar (for easy switching between apps?) or can we recreate the same in Pop!_OS in some way? Thanks.

    I'm not a fan of using the software stores either but I use a package manager instead of terminal installs. Why? Because I discover new things like in a software store, plus I see exactly what packages will be installed or replaced and sometimes that will stop me from installing a new program.
