Glad you brought up about proofreading reports before sending them off for review. One thing I do, if I have time between calls, is I like to type my report out on Microsoft Word, spell check it, and then copy/paste it onto the report narrative. That was something a veteran officer showed me long time ago.
I just graduated from the academy yesterday. Everything you mentioned was very similar to my experience. My first shift is Christmas morning. I’m looking forward to the challenges this new career with throw at me.
It’s been great! I’m still with the same agency and looking to soon be with a larger agency with more opportunities. It’s been a rewarding career for me so far.
Oh boy, leadership in the police academy. I’ve seen a few people come straight out of training who were class leaders or equivalent who all seemed to believe that they would be the new reincarnation of Gunny Hartman at their new PD or agency. What people need to realise is that the academy teaches you the fundamentals, and does it well, but the fundamentals are maybe 20% of everything that police work involves. Those who listen and pay attention will get to maybe 75% via FTO training with the remaining only being learned by experience. The few people who come out of training certain that they know everything usually end up trying to give “helpful” hints to 20-25 year vets, which does not end well for them. By all means help your classmates who are struggling with areas that you excel in, but do not for a moment believe that you’re going to be some sort of 20 star general at your new PD. Speak less, watch and listen more, and learn from your FTOs and other experienced officers. This will help you do well and will also keep you alive. Great video as usual!
@@squeekytoy1743 I never really liked school work so I never really studied but somehow I still graduated high school . Was the school work hard in the academy? What were some good ways that helped you study ? Sorry for all of the questions . The school work is what I’m most nervous about .
That bringing back water to people who fell back is a good idea, it didn't happen in my academy lol but a good idea still. If not showing good leadership but also just having some good camaraderie between classmates.
I start the academy January 6th! We have a rip program so we’re doing everything we’d do in the academy now just extra pt/dt exercises. And already getting paid full time. We have been doing driving and start shooting next week! I feel this helps so much being better prepared and getting to know your class and get squared away come academy time!
RobS thanks man you too! Pre academy isn’t going to be a walk in the park like I thought it was. It’s still really challenging! Probably more than the academy physically wise. Just remember why you’re there and how much better and in shape you’ll be come academy time! Like they re iterate to us. Trust the process. They do everything for a reason because everything they do has a purpose. Even if you think in the moment that it’s just bs. It’s not. You’ll do great. Just don’t quit and remember you’re always being watched and you start representing that department! And team building with your classmates is key
K 1121 no. Military and police are different. Military experience will help more when it comes to formation such as marching, and saluting and having that no quit mentality/physical fitness. Everything else depends on you such as the academics, driving, shooting, and other things.
I would take the honors part to mean getting the most out of your academy experience. The more skill and knowledge you have, the better you will be on the job. I like to read other books besides the course text. Good source of thoughtful questions for your instructor's (but, not grandstanding).
I received the award for best Marksman in my class when I went through last year. I have always been a big gun guy and I would have been embarrassed to not shoot the beat. Even now in yearly in-service when anything about the minimum requirement is not even scored and just considered a pass, I still strive to shoot a 100 and most of the time I do or miss only 1
Super late comment, but does graduating with honors ever impact your career promotion wise? Currently active duty military and for us graduation with honors isn't important what so ever.
@@freefieldtraining wow small world. I start the academy may 8th wish me luck! Biggest piece of advice? Also can you come home starting the first weekend?
Usually at pti you come home on weekends if you like. They pt is pretty running centric, and a few of the runs are fairly long. If you are used to doing the mile and a half for the power test, start slowing your pace now and running a couple miles. Otherwise, they aren't that hard of an operation. Just stay out of trouble and coast.
Most of my academy class are no longer cops. Statistically though that is not unusual. Last I checked the average length of a police career is three years. Same for a chief of police, 3 years is about average duration.
J Peza same the highest academic scoring person in my class was 57 years old and worked 6 hours on patrol with the sheriffs office and quit. Couldn’t handle it Second highest scoring is now a school resource officer, I think I was like 5th and I liek to think I’m doing good. Lol. Been on patrol 11 months
Merry Christmas to you Sir! I back the Blue! really anyone! I do it for free. My heart won’t let me have a helpless person be victimized nor let evil prevail. My problem is I’m A Tejano Tex-Mex and I look like a thug to Police and I look like police go thugs I treat everyone with respect. Any advice? I’m not covered in tattoos nor have a record.
Chris Ballo in North Carolina, 20 is the youngest to be a police officer and Sheriffs standards requires to be 21 y/o to be a sworn deputy Typically it’s 21 and an 18 year old should not be a cop. Get some life experience and social experience. Police work is mostly talking to people and common sense and exercising good judgement which comes with life experience

Just ordered the book. I'll give it a read before I head off.
@HaydenKink Did you find the police academy acdemics exam extremely challenging or are they not that difficult if you truly stud
So do you go to police academy first or apply for a department and then if accepted you go to police academy afterwards?
Think you go to police academy first, and the local police departments will hire from your class.
