- After a few busy social weeks I go for a flight to recharge my batteries and enjoy the solitude of private aviation. See the 2024 Australian Open from above. Filmed in a Cirrus SR22 G3 in Melbourne, Australia. Aircraft is VH-EYZ flying from Moorabbin Airport around the Melbourne skyline.

VERY IMPORTANT: I am a private pilot and am NOT qualified to give flying instruction. This video, like all videos on this channel, has been significantly edited from the original source footage and is provided for entertainment purposes only. Many radio calls and procedures have been omitted. If you have any questions about anything you see or hear, please speak to a Certified Flying Instructor first.
Your approach to the information from the tower at the end is something every pilot can learn from 👏
Hi Stefan, glad you enjoyed the solitude taking us 144K subscribers along with you in EYZ for the flight. As always, a nice video.
Completely agree with this Stefan, sometimes it's good to just have nothing taking you away from the moment, and what a moment to behold flying a plane is (I know the feeling very well! 😀)
Thank you, yes enjoying the moment, being present, is something I want to focus on more in 2024. Cheers.
I've been putting some money aside for a 'discovery' flgiht thanks in no small part to your channel! Your love of flying is quite contagious!
A social battery is a concept I learnt a while ago and I completely agree with you. Sometimes we just need some solitude to let things recharge. I feel like our time in lockdown reset the scale a bit on social interactions too (certainly for me it did). I’ll always remember the first time after lockdown when I went to an all day social event, before it would have been a breeze but I came back from it drained.
My wife and I agreed last year that we did too much, by the end of the year we were both very tired. This year we’ve actually booked in “do nothing weekends” so we have time to recharge our batteries be it together or getting some much needed solitude.
As always a great video, love your content.
Great video - as always.
And a good tip about listening out for parachute operations. Perhaps a better idea is to not do parachute drops over a heavily built up area on one of the busiest VFR transit zones in Melbourne. Seems like it's just asking for an accident.
I love Melbourne and just the aviation in Melbourne the pilots you meet are all so kind and can share experience about a place that you grow up in.
Thank you so so much for posting this video Stef! I have PPL flight test coming up soon, but I didn’t had chance to practice city orbit and worried about radio call… but now I have a great image and what to expect! Actually, I saw EYZ taking off few days ago and I was wondering what the next video about haha thanks a lot 🙏
I saw the title of the video and the first shot with you put in the GoPro on the wing and I thought finally someone's going to show me how to keep the batteries charged on the external mounted cameras 😂😂😂
Haha, we can put humans on the moon but we still can't stop our wing-mounted GoPro's powering off in flight. I feel your pain mate!
You’re a top bloke Stefan! Good luck mate, can’t wait to see more of your inspiring flying adventures when this black cloud has blown over and you’re back where you belong, in the left hand seat of YZ.
Great video, Stef!
Currently working towards my PPL and your videos are a great source of inspiration and education. Keep up the great work!
I'm right there with Stefan on the solitude conversation. I love my people and I do need bits of socialization here and there, but I also very much love and need my alone time. Being alone together with another introvert is also good -- eg sitting on the beach with a friend for hours, each of us immersed in a book, or on our respective laptops working on projects, or in a museum, or looking out of an airplane, having a coffee at a small airstrip, etc. Often interspersed with geeking out about some aspect of our amazing universe. 🤩
Completely understand the solitude factor - I would even hazard a guess that us solitude seekers are in the majority rather than the minority.
I'm always looking up in the sky hoping to spot you, as I live near Moorabin Airport near Kingston Heath Golf course - one day I'll spot my house :)
I completely relate to the need for solitude. Working in a busy office where I interact with the public, I crave quiet and alone time to decompress. Being up in a plane above SA (I fly out of YPPF), where it is all me, I can talk to myself without anyone thinking I'm odd (😂), the only thing I have to worry about is flying the plane safely, and the decisions are all mine, is a great way to recharge. It always gives me a boost. Love your channel and your approach to flying Stef - Emma
Hi Stefan, I really enjoy your videos. I understand going to seek some solitude, great advice. I Just earned my private pilot certificate last week after many hurdles. Your videos are some of the ones I would watch to keep me inspired, so keep up the great work! Looking forward to fly on my own and seek some of that solitude.
-Sergio (Texas, USA)
Hey congratulations, that's awesome Sergio. Getting your PPL is a massive milestone in life, I hope you have many fun adventures of your own in the future.
Amen; my wife said long ago that aviation was my best form of therapy…I tend to come home relaxed, focused with a good sense of accomplishment even if it was just a few laps around the airport
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ON THAT STATEMENT
It always amazes me how that nosewheel strut holds its own. 😊
Especially on a grass strip like that hey? It's very springy, and I try to keep a lot of the weight on the mains when rolling out, but I know what you mean.
@@StefanDrury testament to quality!
Great vid by the way. I know exactly what you mean. Even a round touch&goes will do the trick.
Completely agree with you - It´s just nice to be alone for a while.
I love solitude.
I fully agree with you, and you're lucky to live in Australia. Here north of western europe, weather has been pathetic for weeks. As soon as weather get a bit blue, I jump in a plane to fly
Great Video! I enjoy your content and can fully understand your need to recharge your batteries this way. Great to have you here on TH-cam :)
Gotta keep them batteries charged! Would love to meet up with you next time you're up for socialising and coming out to Melton Airfield!
I absolutely understand what you mean. I often say to those that think I'm anti social is "I'm often alone, but rarely lonely"
I can relate to that, thanks Ian.
THIS is the reason I fly. Superb video as ever Stefan! Blue skies 🤘
Thanks Adam, same to you!
These kinda of videos always put a smile on my face. Good video Stef :)
That's lovely feedback, thanks Naomi, glad you enjoyed it. But the goats take all the credit.
Nice video Stef! I've never been a social person around people I don't know either. Sometimes it's good to have some time to yourself!
Lots of us out there who appreciate some time alone, thanks for sharing that JB.
Solitude is pretty much the best!
everyone has their own way to recharge. we are glad you bring us along on yours'
Question, Have you ever thought about learning to fly a helicopter or other type of aircraft?
"New sheep" - 3 goats walk up. Love your work Stefan. Your sense of humour always makes me chuckle.
I said that and then forgot to film the actual sheep!
@@StefanDrury fair enough. I thought it was intentional. Good fun either way.
With you with Solitude!
Mines just a different way!
D
Great video Stef. I’m always looking for someone to take with me, but a solo to Melton doing what you love sounds pretty great to me.
A good mix of both is important I think. I love flying with friends/family, but also on my own sometimes. Whatever makes you happiest.
I definitely enjoy my own time but rarely fly on my own, I always have passengers because i feel it's almost a bit of waste taking an empty plane around just for myself. Maybe I'll take a few more solo flights to have some me time!
I think a healthy mix of both is important. I definitely fly with others, a lot of the time I don't record those flights but it's great to share something as awesome as aviation with others for sure.
I don't know... Im pretty sure ive been told off my Sian before... haha but that was purly my fault for a wrong radio call
I thought that you were having a shiny new G7 for Christmas!
Haha, if it had a Jet-A1 engine then maybe...
Craves solitude, goes on to make a YT post for hundreds of thousands of viewers. As always, awesome content. :)
Haha, love this comment! Well you know I can’t fly anywhere without you guys, that’s TOO much solitude even for me 😂
I just saw a video on the new Cirrus SR22 G7 and wondering what you think of the new design or if you have seen it yet, in person or in videos? Stay Safe. Loved the video on NOT commenting on crashes as I find it heavily video these days and find it in bad taste unless it's an official crashes investigation from appropriate agencies but even then I'm not a fan.
hi! I am aiming to be a private pilot too, Also from Melbourne. Love your channel!
Thanks, I hope you enjoy your flight training and wish you all the best with your aviation journey.
I randomly looked this up. I wondered where you went, I forgot Melton had a small strip. FlightRadar did not show the field
Sorry if you thought I'd crashed into a field 😂 honestly just wanted a coffee.
That's gotta be the first time Melton has been called "A beautiful place on earth."
Haha, poor Melton! I mean the airport is a fun place, with lovely people, and goats - I find that beautiful.
Hey Stef, Cam we please have those flight sim videos back? Just some flight sim videos, Like once a month
Melton is a great little Airport
Yeah fun place to visit, and honestly I'm a bit of a coffee snob but theirs is always good.
Hello!
Hello 👋 that was fast!
I'm staying at melton for the f1 this year! Maybe I'll go check it out
You should, say hi to the goats for me.
@@StefanDrury sure why not
Would love to see VH-EYZ in Europe❤
Me too! That’s always been the plan, to have EYZ in many countries around the world. It will happen, when everything lines up, I’ll do it and make a good story to share with you all here.
If you are in Germany sometime, it would be awesome to see EYZ at Genderkingen Airport (EDMQ) thanks for your reply.
Appreciate it
Not sure I agree with the controller. You’re more than 3 miles out and should be listening and broadcasting on 135.7. If there was any conflict, it was the centre controller’s responsibility to identify and manage.
Stefan, I agree with your comments about solitude.
Now if I maybe pedantic, I disagree with some of your responses to checklist items. Flaps "away"???, Mixture "goes full rich", Fuel pump "goes on".
Please remember that a checklist is not a doing list. It is to check that the item called has been complied with and is in the required position (not transiting).
Complacency and slackness causes accidents.
Username checks out
Does anybody know where to buy used or cheaper headset in Europe?
No different than getting in the car and going for a drive to get out of the house, maybe go sit on top of a lookout and think about the Roman Empire.
Just that Stef has a Cirrus instead.
So a million dollar plane is to escape the wife? :)
Flying might have its relaxing moments and views but the absolute correctness and requirements just negate this. I could drive my car to Melton, have coffee or whatever and have a peaceful drive home without permission, direction or legal restrictions. Aviation is a wonderful pastime,if you can afford it but it is not without a great amount of effort , planning and stress.
The very definition of "introvert." You need time to yourself to recharge.
In the 11 years since i got my PPL I've had exactly two people in the plane with me that it wasn't their job to be there. Part of me is disappointed. Part of me isn't.
