NO QUARTER LIVE - DRUM GROOVES AND FILLS *DEMO*

  • Someone requested that I do a video demonstrating the drum groove and fills on the live TSRTS version of No Quarter, so I put this together. The main focus of this video is on the drumming during the keyboard /guitar solo . Its a half time jazzy/funk groove with lots of active bass drum and hihat work throughout and some typical signature Bonzo 16th note fills.
    There are similarities between the groove that Bonzo plays toward the end of the guitar solo , (with the double stroke snare/bass drum-hihat feel) and the Theramin jam section of Whole Lotta Love from the movie soundtrack as well. It reminds me a lot of Mike Clark's drumming with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, and Alphonse Mouzon's style of drumming as well.

    Outstanding George. I’d love to hear you cover Gallows Pole. One of my favorites.
    Special Request: I’d love to see yourself and Terry playing opposite each other and work out a cover of Bonzo’s Montreux together. I’m sure it would be majestic. 👍

    I liked your introduction about Bonham's influences. I don't know much about drum history but I do can hear some similarities with those early R&B players. Specially on that laid back bass drum and snare interplay

      Yes indeed, and the air between the phrases....hosnsemse of timing was very much like the old soul R&B guys. Thanks!

    What professional, clear, insightful, and insiring instruction. And...ways to explore creativity. I love it! Learned to play drums at age 14 sitting in the dark being just carried away by the brilliance and quality of Led Zep. That was 40 years ago and still absolutely moved by their music. Keep up the great work, you and Terry are a great team. Thank you.

      Keith Mounts Thank you, that's good to know. I'm never really sure if I'm being clear and not being redundant. Maybe Terry and I will do a live video soon....I didn't see his, but he said it went well.

    Another great insight into JB's influences.This is becoming CSI Bonham with your forensic breakdowns! Love it, I used to have Alphonse Mouzon's Mind Transplant LP, how the hell did he play those kick doubles wearing 4inch platform soles?

    Question here. I know you made this video roughly 5 years ago, but I was wondering if you knew what your cymbal setup is here?

    Excellent lesson and demonstration!! I have my next few months of practice before me now!! I always how he got those great sounding fills in No Quarter. The 16th note fills I could never figure out that they were even 16th notes. The funky style and feel he plays with is brilliant. Great that you pointed out all his influences. Alot of people think he was just a beater and thumper of the drums but he really swung and had groove. Jimmy Page always talked about that and so did Robert Plant.

    It blows my mind that there are people out there would give any of your videos a thumbs down SMH.
    I always thought that Bonham used the same ghost note sticking at 18:16 at the end of Candy Store Rock until I saw your cover

    Hey George! Greetings from Chico, Ca! I don't want to sound like I'm complaining (because I truly love all your videos!!). But I really loved the sound of your drums when the overhead Mic was out in the front of your drums. That could just be me though!! Keep it up man.

    • @BONHAMOLOGY
      @BONHAMOLOGY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mr. Supraphonic Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Actually I am still trying different mic placements for the best possible sound and I really like the last one I used ( for the Song Remains and Rain Song), which is the condenser overhead and an AKG D 112 in front of the bass drum. For this video I didn't use the mics, just the built in mic on the Zoom camera, because I thought it's easier to hear my talking ... in lieu of having a dedicated talking mic. Let me know what you think of the previous two videos .

    • @theviraldrummer
      @theviraldrummer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BONZOLOGY with Terry & George I did enjoy the previous two. I just thought it was a little cymbal heavy. Thanks for the reply and the Mic info. The band I am in is recording now and I would to try some simpler set ups like what you're doing.
      Ps. It is definitely easier to hear you talk now so I guess you made the right choice. Thanks!

    Hi George , do you consider the guitar solo section to be a half time Groove , counting 1+2+3+4
    with 3 being the back beat . Or do you consider it a 16th note groove counting 1e+a and the snare falling on beat 4.

    • @BONHAMOLOGY
      @BONHAMOLOGY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think of it in half time, so the BackBeat is on three.

  • @jameshissy7117
    @jameshissy7117 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you get that snare to sound so clean. I find if I tune to low its bad. Medium strength is tight but loads of overtones. Love that dry sound.

    • @BONHAMOLOGY
      @BONHAMOLOGY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      bottom head tight, top head med tight, but I do change it from time to time, depending on the room, how I want the sound...fatter or more quick attack and higher pitch. I also always have the muffler on a little to control ring ...like Bonzo did.

    Hey George, can you do a quick rundown on your microphones and the mixer in back of you? How you connect everything up etc? Do you run it into a PC in back of you?

    • @BONHAMOLOGY
      @BONHAMOLOGY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      8mileshigher Hi. No pc . It's nothing very fancy. I use one MXL V250 condenser above my right shoulder, and I just started using an AKG D 112 in front of the bass drum. I run them into a Mackie ProFX 4 channel mixer , with only some slight EQ and reverb . I use a Zoom Q2 mini camera , then I drop the vids into iMovie and edit them, sometimes I boost the volume a bit there.
