    The rankings are a measure of consistency and are fair enough in my book. The last time Ireland lost 2 games in a row was 2021 six nations.

      @@johnmc3862 doesn’t really matter if you want to claim to be the best on the world be ready to face any pool arrangement, if you need the stars to aligne and everything to work out for you then you going to wait a while but if you figure a way to over come it then you deserve to be the best cause you mixed a bit of luck cause you’ll always need somethings out of your control to work out or more the fact you need more things to work out than go wrong. By that I mean injuries and recovery time. SA had some sht luck but they capitalised every time they got a break and that made the difference. It could have gone a lot of different ways but they managed to make it go their way. Whether you send your pulls by rankings or purely random draw or any way you want it has no real affect on the outcome being what there is best. Even if you are weaker than your opponents but all the stars aligned for you then you still deserved to be the best because fact of the matter is you somehow got there against the odds. Statistically it will happen but if you bank on that you risk not living long enough to see it happen.

    Love seeing the rankings so close towards the top. Feels like on their day, any of those sides can win which is great for the sport. Also, if you told me 10 years ago we'd see Italy ahead of Australia in the rankings I would've laughed. Great to see their efforts have paid off some.

      Bizzare scoring system but as commented on here, it's an indication of consistency, I think SA got double points for winning the WC, not exactly sure how many that was, but it's evened out again now apart from France being a bit behind.

    When you mentioned "famous drop goal by Frawley" it just made me realise. How many amazing, classic matches have Ireland been involved with since Andy Farrell took over. Games we'll be talking about on years to come. Ireland beating the All blacks, Ireland V Boks rivalry, the Ireland V France competitiveness pre World Cup. I think he could go down as the best coach ever. Or Rassie arguably

    The South African clubs moving to the URC no doubt has helped this rivalry between Ireland and South Africa to build. I wonder when they’ll meet again as it is getting fascinating.

    • @creekyknee
      @creekyknee หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      When they joined the URC I was so glad. I really thought that it was the right time. There was a risk that the URC was becoming too predictable. The Irish Provinces dominating and Leinster (or maybe Munster) winning all of the time. That was not going to be good for any of the clubs involved. They have made the predictability of the winners un-certain. Now Glasgow was a surprise this time round that nobody saw coming, but I think that SA clubs have injected a bit of spice into the competition. I think that the URC has a great future and this new found rivalry between South Africa and Ireland at International level will only add to that at club level. I think that the Irish Clubs and the South African clubs can learn and benefit from playing each other regularly and this will feed into the International games. I fear that the ABs are going to lose out with the absence of playing SA clubs regularly and of course no longer having a strong Rugby Union nation next door to keep them on their toes. Thanks Eddie.

    • @barryb90

      Saffas definitely have made the URC much better, It's way more competitive. If they consider us rivals, I take that as a compliment. The World Rankings as they stand now are the most accurate they have been this year I think. The point system has been well thought out with how it works. If it worked well during WC cycles it would reflect more the outcome and yet here we are but this is why they don’t matter much. Ireland getting two points from such a narrow win doesn’t really make sense. Rankings serve more of a ego boost but then come the real deal during WCs then the real performances come to light. SA and the AB are so do,infant because they put it out there and hold higher standards while teams like Ireland although having good runs don’t hold up the standards. Take this WC they beat SA and behaved as if that was job done and the result is yet another choked QF meanwhile SA scrapped all the way and at only released the pressure in the semi but caught their mistake before it was too late after beating france. England to their credit had a good crack at it but even then couldn’t hold up.

    As Rassie has (correctly) said on so many occasions: "We'd much rather win World Cup than sit at No 1 for four years and not win RWC." And on a few other occasions: "We will blood new players, try new combinations, tweak our game plan and test our progress in the interim, but winning Rugby World Cup is the sole goal." The Boks already blooded new players and tried out a brand new game plan (with Tony Brown in charge) in the two tests against Ireland. No wonder they were not firing on all cylinders. Bottom line: these silly "rankings" mean sweet blow zilch.

      I don't think it's that people don't understand them. Most fans have a selective bias. Some have it worse than others. There will always be surprise results or teams being understrength that we might dismiss where the algorithm doesn't. But we should not be SO sure that the surprise result is as much of a surprise or the need for players to rest or recover from injury means that perhaps consistency is a factor in a team's ranking
