what's the point of the rail along the soviet border? I didn't think rails helped supply. They only moved supply to the hubs from the capital. I've been struggling with supply and would love some clarification.
Place two supply hubs one in the northern third and one in the middle. Only build your rails to 1 until you move into the USSR. I improved the build after the video came out. Great question, I'll pin this comment.
Rivers actually provide supply in a similar way to supply hubs if you run a rail across them. Rails are also a hell of a lot cheaper than supply hubs to set up. In terms of cost Rivers>ports>hubs Also this is slightly less useful but rails along a defensive front are useful for minor powers with long fronts and low man power. You can use rails to strategically redeploy your mountaineer special forces units to counter any potential breakthroughs allowing you to potentially get away with a slightly weaker front line infantry. Even just a level one rail is enough to prevent units from taking the long way around.
To follow up on what Pedro said in the comments, Pehr Evind is pretty much useless as his surrender limit trait is replaced when you switch out to military government under Mannerheim. You want to build coastal forts on Aland to lvl 3 once the war starts, soviets dont invade with marines so having those forts mean that no matter what they use, they will have 0 stats. Check the sea zon e surrounding aland often, if there is no soviet navy then you can safely pass, i dont think ive seen the soviets do a naval invasion early and they usually put away their navy soon enough. Also once you take murmansk make sure to leave 1 divsion in the murmamnsk and petsamo since sometimes the soviets invade there. I usually make minelaying submarines and have them fill out the sea zone surrounding aland with mines so that might be a factor in the soviet navy going away. As for sweden , once the war starts you want to push out to murmansk/olonets/onega as early as possible( cut off supply hubs and then encircle) to get cores on sweden, manually justify on sweden use reconquer core and deploy roughly 16 divisions, encircle the divisions in the north and then cap them. Also you should be easily able to cap the soviets by 43, 42 is very achieveable ( dont forget to get collabs). Once you cap the soviets then you can attack the axis to get the uralic brothers united acheivement. By then your industry should be so huge that you can make a ridicolous amount of navals bombers and you should have stolen a decent navy that you can refit to use to invade the UK. The US is an absolute pain however then so id suggest doing greate finland seperately. Also once you get partial mob create an intelligence agency and use it to steal tech, dont rush any of the tools or dispersed/concentrated industry techs, hell i intentionally fall behind just so i can steal them. Also i would just go concentrated , the soviets only bomb infra and not factories so dispersed is pretty crap, im not sure if you did this but you should build 2-3 levels of AA in helsinki and turku and possibly max out AA in karjala since the soviets love to bomb supply. Also make sure to get lend lease from sweden and turkey , italy also usually has trucks and support equipment edit: concerning army xp you go proper heiritage to make a 40w cav training unit , then professional officer corps then political loyalty for stab
I agree with getting rid of the first leader ASAP. I don't think you need organize oposition. I also prefer to ban fascism and go priest for the manpower.
@@ESG1 i think organize opposition is by far optimal , political unity increases public trust by 10%, if your first focuses are neutrality and poiltiical unity then you will have -55% public trust , not enough to get the cheaper motion of no confidence. I think the biggest weakness of your build is the PP you are losing an absolute massive amount, your starting leader retired in march, the difference between starting guy and kyosto kallo is 0.2 pp daily , you lost 80 pp alone from the just that, you also sat in low trust and even very low trust which is at minimum 0.2 so another 80 pp(probally more like 100 due to 0.4pp lost at very slow trust), you also got 3 advisors and partial mob which kyosto kallo gives a 25% discount costing another 91 PP. You sat at 45/40 stab due to to banning having low trust and banning fascism early before doing at least 1 anti facist raid, which is another -0.04/0.1PP daily and much more importantly - 10 factory output, you said that manpower is the limiting factor , which it is, but the way you get around that are higher quality divisions which you need the factory output for You lose 160 PP by march 37 and 91 PP from advisors/partial mob by aug 36. Also if you have kysoto kallo then he gets that 20% public trust from political unity/following focuses which keeps you out from low, i usually dont bother with the priest and banning facism early so it helps by keeping him out of low trust for a good bit of time, by which i already need to get rid of him anyway
@@ESG1 Just watched it, i think its a way better and easier way of doing the achievement. Doing it neutral requires so much planning and you can still get rnged on Aland. I think the only thing i would change with the fascist route is delaying aircraft by a year or so, while your still fighting in finland and murmansk i dont find aircraft to do much whereas having more divisions is really helpful. Once you push into the soviets you really want then aircraft then since the front is much wider and very hard to beat the soviets out on quantity even if you encircle dozens of divisions in murmansk. Also kudos for going back to your old videos, you deserve a lot more subs then you have.
Interesting I would have gone charismatic over oganization first. If you expect to defend with single or a low number of units there will be no reinforcements. Rather youd want to have faster org recov there between battles I think
Id like to note that someone on a paradox forum said that military high command is applied on a divisional basis so you'd need to make units classified as artillery in order to get the bonus which I haven't watched the whole video yet but no one does that so idk yet. It was 2018 so they might have changed it but yeah
My understanding is that, that was changed a while ago. The high command affects the battalion level of the division template. In other words, u would have to have a template comprised of mostly arty to gain the soft attack bonus. The labeling of the division 100% does not matter. In other words, what u call the division or the division picture. It could matter in terms of doctrinal bonuses that may affect how the game categorizes your division, ie. tank or infantry.
@@ESG1 then it might be useful for me, I didn't use it in my own historical Finnland playthrough because I thought it wouldn't be useful but I'll have to check
I think if you put your navy on strike force the Soviets struggle to get enough superiority to naval invade right away making it almost certain the division gets accross to Aland, I followed your guide and they landed there like day 2 of the war before my guy got there.
I've been trying this achievement combo since the DLC came out, without success. Here are some of my thoughts, and questions. 1. I usually skip most of the Align focuses, in order to get in other focuses. My order is: Neutrality, get Ryti (PP, Production cap, Non-aligned support) , then Nat. Unity, Simojoki (200 manpower guy). I did get the Swedish advisor that gives 15% PP once, but I feel it's not needed if I just ban Fascism, then take Kallio at elections, and do the Entice the Masses once. I use Captain of Industry until 39, when I switch to the Armorer. Since consumer goods are now calculated in a relative sense, is Kekkonen that impactful? 2. You did not rush the focuses Lotta Svärd and Union of Finnish Brothers. A noob question from me: does rushing them give more manpower overall than if they were done later? I do them after the first military focus, just to be able to make artillery early. 3. I used to take the Radiosonde experiments, but I skipped them in later tries. You showed me a nifty way to make use of the bonus to get the Comp. Machine. 4. Construction tech rushing seems a bit inefficient with a Non-aligned Finland. IMO, you can't make use of it until the war starts and you get MP to trickle in. I usually try to research planes, but even there, manpower constrains you. 5. I take the air bases focus below the Ilmavoimat one, for infrastructure and supply. Ilmavoimat itself is a free military factory, and that's hard to refuse. 6. Template: due to manpower constraints, my approach is to use the existing army, and supplement it with new divisions built as 6 battalions of INF, with Recon for synergy with Sup-Art, Field Hospital and Engineers in support. I do admit Winter Logistics Companies sound nice, as does AT or AA. 7. I tend to take the Jaeger focus for the infantry def/atk staff member. Concealment does make sense, but my problem is that I can either have 30 divisions with only some being the upgraded template, or 27 being at their best. And you have to cover not just the front, but also your ports. I do use Mountaineers too, TBH, upgraded to have Rangers. I do take Parmi's Devils, of course. 8. What ruined many runs was a Soviet landing in Äländ. They can get there before my garrison even if I send it just as the war starts, if SU controls Estonia. And that can happen. I took Kilpapurjehdus in the following attempt to foil it, but that run failed because tanks ground me down in Petsamo. I take Lone Wolf ASAP to get a bit more manpower in, since it always feels I'm always short of units.
I don't have exact numbers but 10% population factor does not seem to move the needle much. It may only increase the available manpower pool by 10%. Recruitable population factor seems much better. It may be better to wait until you have more cores from USSR to get the 10% population factor but then you can't get your penal div and it would be super hard to hold without that extra manpower.
I agree with taking lone wolf earlier. Definetly OP. To hold Aland, place one div on a fallback line then have another div waiting to cross right after. That way one will get caught by the subs but the other makes it across. You can also make one destroyer with two depth charge slots. I was literally able to hold the seas around Aland being extremely carefull. Learned this on my live stream today along with chat's help. Thanks for the help chat!
For lone wolf what are your thoughts on delaying the winter war until Barbarossa? I’ve had a lot more success when the axis are fighting with the Soviets in the gulf of Finland than I ever have fighting alone.
I haven't tested it but that would be fun for a historical build. You can get most of the good bonuses early though. The AI will start building medium tanks and potentially more air so you could have problems defeating them later in the game.
@@ESG1 one more question: how do i keep the first leader around (cus he is a necessary component in ensuring monarchist finland via the "a new course for kokoomus" and "the finnish throne" focuses)
am I incredibly unlucky or is it common for the soviet union to naval invade rauma pori and the tile below rauma imideatly as the war starts because I just had a run wasted due to the fact that they naval invaded there. or could it be cuz I dont have the new DLC. The plan worked flawlesly besides that tho so if it's not something thats common I'll do the same run again but oof this was sum emotional dmg
You can get supply from transport planes, roads, rails and ports. So depends what you have available. The best way to supply areas are trains and supply depots. If you are on the coast, ports work well but you only get like three tiles of supply with the port alone.
They supply a thin strip along the tiles. The majority of supply radiates out of the supply hubs. The supply hubs need to be connected to the rails to work. It is good to build back up rail lines in case they get captured or bombed. Sometimes you don't have enough time to build everything you would want.
The construction times for me are way off. You were done building your infrastructures in the 2 southern states before mine even started. I don't know what I did wrong, but by the time the USSR declared on me I was just starting to build forts and got steamrolled.
@@ESG1 So I made this comment mid game; I have NSB, BBA, Man the guns, and La Resistance . In my Industry section, I couldn't take the Construction Company without already having done the Found Pohjolan Voima focus, but in this guide you get the Construction Company to help build the 2 infs in the 2 regions to get civs. I actually wound up holding everything except for 2 tiles and took them back, but I eventually got naval invaded by 4 divisions around Vaasa which killed the achievement for me.
@@ESG1 makes sense. Still a good guide because even with only a few forts the strategy still works pretty well. I just wish I had troops near the naval invasion when they came

Also make sure to get lend lease from sweden and turkey , italy also usually has trucks and support equipment
edit: concerning army xp you go proper heiritage to make a 40w cav training unit , then professional officer corps then political loyalty for stab
You sat at 45/40 stab due to to banning having low trust and banning fascism early before doing at least 1 anti facist raid, which is another -0.04/0.1PP daily and much more importantly - 10 factory output, you said that manpower is the limiting factor , which it is, but the way you get around that are higher quality divisions which you need the factory output for
You lose 160 PP by march 37 and 91 PP from advisors/partial mob by aug 36.
Also if you have kysoto kallo then he gets that 20% public trust from political unity/following focuses which keeps you out from low, i usually dont bother with the priest and banning facism early so it helps by keeping him out of low trust for a good bit of time, by which i already need to get rid of him anyway
I think I found away around this with the lone wolf achievement guide. Check out that video.
Thanks for the kind words. I am working hard to drop more clickable videos to improve my subscriber base.
Followed everything in the guide just to get naval invaded by 11 division on Turuk, Vaasa and Port ports at the same time :)
I got immediately naval invaded from Vaasa port....
You and me both
I thought I was having a good game as Finland - then the Soviets did a naval invasion into my rear…
Yeah, that's the annoying part.
Interesting I would have gone charismatic over oganization first. If you expect to defend with single or a low number of units there will be no reinforcements. Rather youd want to have faster org recov there between battles I think
It's for later in the game. Also, if you want to go war early it is more helpful.
I think it's better to bring Kallio in charge before you switch your economy law. He has a good discount.
I think you are right
Id like to note that someone on a paradox forum said that military high command is applied on a divisional basis so you'd need to make units classified as artillery in order to get the bonus which I haven't watched the whole video yet but no one does that so idk yet.
@@ESG1 then it might be useful for me, I didn't use it in my own historical Finnland playthrough because I thought it wouldn't be useful but I'll have to check
great walkthrough
Thanks man!
I think if you put your navy on strike force the Soviets struggle to get enough superiority to naval invade right away making it almost certain the division gets accross to Aland, I followed your guide and they landed there like day 2 of the war before my guy got there.
That’s a good idea. Really tough when they get Aland so fast. Sometimes they don’t go there first.
Whats the point of disbanding the units at the start? Im new at the game
Good question. When you train one division only, you are able to get more xp and lose less equipment during training.
@@ESG1 ahh i see. Thanks
@@ESG1 so it’s good to do this at the start of most countries?
I would say yes, unless you are planning on sending volunteers to foreign wars. There is a minimum division requirement to do that.
did you trade for resources in the beginning or no?
I can’t remember but I typically don’t trade for resources on minors unless I have a greater than 8 deficit.
*I forgot to mention that the additional time to work on focuses makes a huge difference as well.
I haven't tested it but that would be fun for a historical build. You can get most of the good bonuses early though. The AI will start building medium tanks and potentially more air so you could have problems defeating them later in the game.
7:38 I wouldn't really recommend that one because it only affects AT and AA. Not artillery so the soft attack buff is not that big.
hi esg, can you please share the research orders list. great video btw tysm for the guide!
Unfortunately I didn’t write it down. Prioritize industry first if the research is under 320 days, arty second, plane third, tank fourth and gun last.
@@ESG1 thanks a lot man!
@@rishabarora9269 NP!
@@ESG1 one more question: how do i keep the first leader around (cus he is a necessary component in ensuring monarchist finland via the "a new course for kokoomus" and "the finnish throne" focuses)
@@ESG1 Why not look over the full, unedited video and see what you researched. Just a suggestion.
am I incredibly unlucky or is it common for the soviet union to naval invade rauma pori and the tile below rauma imideatly as the war starts because I just had a run wasted due to the fact that they naval invaded there. or could it be cuz I dont have the new DLC. The plan worked flawlesly besides that tho so if it's not something thats common I'll do the same run again but oof this was sum emotional dmg
It happens, u have to stay vigilant and pause micro
@@ESG1 yh I aint skillful enough for that rn but I suppose if I can get a run where they wont naval invade ilideatly I can peolly deal with it
I would just play slow, listen for the naval invasion sound and keep glancing at the upper right hand corner of the screen.
Why didnt you take Free Trade with your excess PP? And how about using the Valtionrautatiet concern, before you complete the Pohjolan Voima focus?
No free trade since u are resource constrained. I’ll have to check that focus.
When you built railways across the frontline does that give the area supply so if you didn’t build them they would have no supply or less?
You can get supply from transport planes, roads, rails and ports. So depends what you have available. The best way to supply areas are trains and supply depots. If you are on the coast, ports work well but you only get like three tiles of supply with the port alone.
@@ESG1 but do the railways across the frontline give more supply or did you just do that so the soldiers can move faster
They supply a thin strip along the tiles. The majority of supply radiates out of the supply hubs. The supply hubs need to be connected to the rails to work. It is good to build back up rail lines in case they get captured or bombed. Sometimes you don't have enough time to build everything you would want.
@@ESG1ok thanks man really good vid im about to get invaded by them hopefully I can survive well enough haha
Good luck!
The construction times for me are way off. You were done building your infrastructures in the 2 southern states before mine even started. I don't know what I did wrong, but by the time the USSR declared on me I was just starting to build forts and got steamrolled.
It's hard to say without seeing your build. You have the DLC right?
@@ESG1 So I made this comment mid game; I have NSB, BBA, Man the guns, and La Resistance . In my Industry section, I couldn't take the Construction Company without already having done the Found Pohjolan Voima focus, but in this guide you get the Construction Company to help build the 2 infs in the 2 regions to get civs. I actually wound up holding everything except for 2 tiles and took them back, but I eventually got naval invaded by 4 divisions around Vaasa which killed the achievement for me.
Looks like u need the AAT DLC of u want to follow my guide more closely. The naval invasions are annoying. U just have to stay vigilant.
@@ESG1 makes sense. Still a good guide because even with only a few forts the strategy still works pretty well. I just wish I had troops near the naval invasion when they came
Thanks man. I just place the bad units on the ports.
your railway lines seem very wastefull in their layout
You could be right, but they come out fast.
Do we need dlc for this?
Yes, Arms Against Tyranny
unit templates?
15 width, one battalion of arty. Support companies: shovel, AA, Arty, Winter logi and now I go regular logi as well. Works great.
I managed to do it after many attempts, then went for the Finnish Him achievement
Can i ask can i replace military goverment with old leader if i want play finish monarchy
I haven't tested it but I think it should work. There is a hidden Finnish path too. Not sure what alignment you need to be for that one though.
@@ESG1i need first leader to finish monarchy i tried it and its not possible
Can you do a video showing how to go fascist and make the Nordic Empire from the decisions tab? I can’t ever get the Nordic countries to join
I will live stream that build tomorrow. Going to hold the Finnish line today.
Thanks man
a good when starting you no wait much for you kick Pehr Evind and change Kyosti for begin a balance suport war economy military and resources for help build equipement and continue
Nice guide but i think you were going a little too fast
Sorry about that
4:36 so i remembe
Man it’s so much easier than all this, you’re doing too much way
Make a video and post it.
Did everything like you thought us, but i still got smashed :( this is so shitty game
Your tio close to the mic its realy annoying
My face is the recomended distance from the mic. So, how do I fix that in OBS?
