The Leica Q3 review - The Only Camera I would ever need

  • The New Leica Q3 is an incredible camera. But for someone that shoots primarily on a Leica Q2 Monochrom, how do monochrome images hold up?
    Is the Q3 good enough for the black and white photographer?
    Is it the ultimate street photography camera?

    proper slow paced product story, yet so engaging ! Totally against 'cut every 2,5 seconds to feed the brain ' philosophy. I like it a lot!

      This philosophy is against physiology - it is proven humans are having issues remembering things happening quickly like short scenes less than 5-10 seconds. That’s why you get out from cinema after you watched a marvel movie and cannot remember anything. Plus there is no chance to build up viable character.

      Same here - have the original Q and use it extensively. It is simply brilliant and goes with me everywhere, but I do cheat a bit at times - depending on what I am doing I might, in addition, take an M10 with a 50 mm Summilux or a Nikon D810 with longer lenses.

    I have watched several reviews of the Q3, and all of them dove straight into the camera's technical features, which is useful to be sure. You, however, spoke on a personal level about your connection to the camera and to photography. I truly enjoyed hearing a review from that perspective. I managed to purchase the Q3, and even though I've used it very little thus far, I can already tell I am going to really enjoy this camera. I can already tell I will dive into this camera just to see where it will take me, just for the joy of it. Thank you for your perspective on this wonderful camera!

    The problem is while travelling. I travel to more rough countries and areas where you definitely don't want a camera that's worth more than a year salary over there. I've got cameras stolen etc and was really happy I did not have a Leica by then. Still got great images and felt more secure in my mind knowing I'm not carrying a fortune.

    Hi Paul, great video, I just ordered one Q3 as I already wanted to order a Q2, but then the Q3 was released and I like the 28mm and the tilting screen and the idea to crop into a 60MP frame inside the camera. I just shot since the last 6month with the Fujifilm X100V and the 23mm (35mm equivalent) limits me as I could not always step backwards. As well there is some magic around the brand Leica and I want once in my life to own one. Now my dream comes true. Next week I turn back to Germany and will hold in my hands. It was delivered yesterday and I’m quiet curious if the magic will influence my work. I follow your channel and stay in touch. All the best Peter

    Wonderful video, Paul! (The reader comments below are also well written and helpful.) I've been thinking over the last day about what the Q2 gives me in my portraits and could not find anything (so far) in the Q3 that would make me switch. Sure, the flip screen might be a nice thing to have at times (definitely for a street photographer)... but my subjects KNOW they are being photographed so there is no need to 'sneak' a shot. lol 47mp also sits at the absolute sweet spot for resolution as well.... 60mp (I get that with a Canon 5DSR) simply adds more time retouching skin blemishes and pores in the type of work I do. The focusing on the Q2 is perfectly fine and the recent eye tracking software upgrade solves any lingering frustrations! Cheers, mate!

    A good and informative video. I'm a Q2 owner along with a Canon 5Ds. I have owned a Q and now the Q2, both of which moved me away from the Canon, not because the Canon is a bad camera, far from it, but like you say the Leica makes you want to take pictures. Your Video makes a lot of sense to me and I'm now more excited about getting the Q3, which is on order, infact I'm also thinking of selling the Canon and sundry lenses to get myself a Q2 mono as well. I look forward to watching more of your videos...... keep up the good work.

    These cameras are a huge game changer and they will help you become a better photographer.
    I have just received my Q3 and have owned a Q2 monochrom for some years now. These cameras are without a doubt my all-time favorites, an absolute joy to use, with image quality that blows you away, and a superb build quality that no other brand offers.
    My Canon R5 and it's pro range lenses, Fuji Xpro 3 and it's pro lenses or the pro-Nikons I have owned in the past do not remotely compare to the joy of the user experience of these cameras or the image quality they produce.
    If you write these cameras off because you think they are just 'rich kids toys', or are 'unnecessary'....you're doing yourself no favors and are missing out on something truly amazing.

    Very seldom do I miss not having a tilting screen on my Q2. I have come to the conclusion that it it is due to the focal length giving such a wide field of view that in many cases you just have to point in a general direction and trust the autofocus or manually zone focus to just point and shoot.

    Thanks as always Paul for this excellent review with the Q3. You've hit all the points I wanted to hear and done it in your own initimable way. I sold my Q2 awhile ago in anticipation of the Q3 as I had a good offer but was worried I'd regret it later. This checked all the boxes I needed for my future camera and it could possibly replace my M11 which the Q2 couldn't. Too many choices is not good for me so if this gives me the higher resolution for cropping, better AF, and more flexibility with the screen and charging options, it may very well be my one and only.

    I will be swapping my Q2 for a Q3 as soon as possible because of the sensor. Not for all those lovely 60mp but because it’s a triple resolution, pixel binning BSI sensor. Being able to resolve at 18mp but still using the full back lit sensor will make it an incredible camera for low light shooting

    • @paulreidphotography
      @paulreidphotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad you’re continuing with the Q series of cameras. I don’t know how they can improve things from here though

      Actually the 36mp medium is the sweet spot - see math photographer TH-cam. That’s how I’ll shoot mine when and if I ever get it.

      I'm pretty sure it's the same sensor that's in the Sony A7RIV and A7RV.

    Wow your film making skills are sublime. The pacing, atmospheric sounds filtering in and out, beautifully shot talking head & you articulate so beautifully (lovely accent helps!)

    Agree with each one of our thoughts.
    As someone that comes from the film area, it took me a long time to find a camera that feel correct.
    My only critique to this camera is the weight. I wish it would be more compact like the discontinued Leica CL.

    Hey Paul, great video. Thank you! Question for you - I have a Q2, but am considering upgrading mainly for the better ISO performance and the improved AF. Would you consider that worth it?

    • @paulreidphotography
      @paulreidphotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The improved AF is definitely a huge difference. The noise performance is maybe slightly improved. I guess it depends how much you will get for your Q2.

    You are getting some nice shallow depth of field with those portraits considering the focal length. I`m currently sl2s ,246 and a CL with lenses. Thinking of hacking the CL compact set in for a Q .Thanks for the review .

    I like the look of your portraits. Can you do a video on how you achieve the background separation with a 28-mm lens and how you get the strong tonalities despite shooting in what seems natural light.

    Thank you very much. As I approach 80 years of age, I want to continue shooting high quality photos with less gear/fewer lenses. This will be my second Leica (last one, 15 years ago). This one should serve me well as the only camera I will need!

      I second that .I`m early seventies and have been shooting Leica for 25 years .I`ve thinned out the herd but a Q sounds the ideal camera for most of what I do. I`ve shot 28mm for a few years using Richo and find the FL very flexible .

    i have the q2 thinking of picking up the q2m.. i was a nikon shooter for over 50 years for newspapers but love my q2 but also would love the monochrome… love your videos( i’m elderly and enjoy irritating my kid by having a camera that costs more than her car- LOL… spending her inheritance happily! wondering if the weatherproof is as good on the q3 with the extra ports and floppy screen… but gotta love Leica ❤️ ( drat a different battery $ of course now but finally a stay on lens cap)

    First thing I've seen with out and I really enjoyed it, terrific presentation and some absolutely beautiful photos! Only critique I might have is that you should perhaps include some more of those photos in the video even though it was great seeing that photo wall.
    I agree with wide angle portraits intimacy, they are far more interesting IMO and some of my better ones or the best ones have been with wider angle lenses. The Q3 is for sure on my list and might just be the next thing to get rather than another lens for my Lumix S1R.
    Hope you will get a lot more subscribers, you deserve it! One new with me at least 🙂
