I absolutely love Roger's videos. They are so therapeutic and relaxing to watch when I'm climbing in bed for the evening. So many unique ideas that start as an ugly bulbous mess and become stunning final products. I also really enjoy the narration because my wood turning knowledge is limited at best. Keep 'em coming Roger these videos are awesome!!

This looks like alot of fun. I need to get one of those machines some day. I worked in a wood shop a few years back, for months I made hundreds of pieces for a wrap around deck of a landmarked house, pieces had to be perfect and we're mostly done by hand. All the pieces had complicated design. I really enjoyed that type of work. Every day I was pulling out large quantities of wood filler out of my nose. But it was worth the satisfaction.

I really appreciate how you show the entire journey, that is so helpful for newbies like myself. So many other channels seem to assume we know how you get a tree to the lathe, and parts are logical, but I would never have thought of using a brass brush attachment and I’m off looking for the angle grinder attachment now.
In the U.K. in the 60s and 70s we had a television personality who talked about all things countryside called Jack Hargreaves. I don’t know why, but you remind me of him. If you ever saw him you would know that is a massive compliment, I just don’t what it is reminiscent of him.
Thank you for such a wonderful, informative, entertaining video. I have watched it before but I don’t think I actually owned a lathe at that time.

No wonder our Lord chose to be a carpenter. You can see something beautiful in a dirty, gnarled, twisted piece of wood which would normally be thrown in the garbage. You spend time with and invest yourself until it is transformed into something not only useful, but worthwhile and lovely. He does the same thing with people. Amazing. May we be forever grateful.

That's another beautiful job. I loved doing woodwork when I was at school. I only ever got to use the lathe once. I turned down a candlestick, and I really liked the look of it. My teacher told me that it was rubbish and that it had no form. He threw it into the incinerator, and my confidence went up in smoke with my candlestick. I never touched a lathe again, although I have to say that I'm starting to feel the urge to have another go.

The best way to clean roots is to soak and wash them in warm water. Then stiff brush and or jet wash the buggers.
There's a drying period of course, but it cuts down on tool wear and reduces the possibility of nasty surprises.

Very nice Roger but in my opinion you were playing with fire using the grinder in one hand and trying to hold the piece steady with the other. I recently bought a Rockwell Jawhorse which would have held the piece for you. As in other comments I also think because of the dirt and stones that a pressure washer would have done a great job.

When I turned a root ball like that in my high school shop class, I soaked it in room temperature water and a little soap in a 5gal bucket for an hour and then rinsed it off with a garden hose to dislodge the embedded dirt before I started. Then put in front of a fan for a couple hours to help dry out and tighten the grain a little bit.
Full disclosure: my teacher gave me the idea

    • @aronlinde1723

I guess I shouldn't be surprised it's got such a burl look but I've never though of doing anything with root balls. I doubt you could clean it enough, but using a root ball for a resin-wood bowl could look cool. But I love all the gaps and holes.

To prevent dulling your tools from all the dirt, first hit the ball with a pressure washer. Then when you get deeper into it, and hit more dirt, pressure wash again. In fact, if you have a powerful enough P. washer, you can CARVE wood. I've made some interesting wood sculptures with a pressure washer.
