I love this video. The worried expression when Red was alone with the hyenas, then turning to so much relief and love for his friend saving him was wonderful to watch.
Something to keep in mind. Wild dogs and Hyenas in Africa start eating their prey alive. If you notice, Red was desperately trying to minimize how long he kept his butt up in the air. This is because the hyenas would bite off his balls and/or tail. Same reason he kept his tail down the whole time. If you've watched any cat videos they tend to swing their tails when thinking, but he had his tail completely down because he was mortally terrified and had no time to think
Exactly! I remember wathcing this episode of a couple of years ago and it instantly reminded me of the same scene in Lion King as well. Such a wonderful documnetary!
I can't believe hyenas genuinely sound like they're snickering and cackling. I always assumed that was an exaggeration in media. Could you imagine camping there and hearing that in the middle of the night? Nightmarish.
Lol in somalia the use to come in the city and dig in garbage sometimes even see them pass you… one is not much but as soon as they out number you it’s pure evil.

When rival gang member enters the wrong hood and 10 gangsters get to fight him to the death. In most situations some of the 10 would laugh.I was surprised the lion didnt kill one of them quickly just to show he meant business. He had a chance to but granted there was so many.
Yes! I remember wathcing this episode a couple of years ago and it instantly reminded me of the scene from Lion King where little Simba is attacked by hyenas and Mufasa comes to the rescue.
The attitude of Lions is simply unbelievable. He sees a death situation and decided not to run but to rather face it even to death. That's the height of bravely. If he was a coward, he would have attempted to run even if might end up getting caught
A truly amazing video. That lion was going to bite everyone of them hyenas before his ultimate demise. After watching again I counted 5 hyenas caught and bitten up to the point the other lion arrived.
Red kept his sack on the ground through most of this. That must be the hyaenas target. The relief and gratitude red expressed when in the clear was moving. They have feelings.
I've been watching nature shows since "The Wild Kingdom, " by Mutual of Omaha, narrated with Marlin Perkins in the 60s, and was prepared for the inevitability. Passionately seeing adult male lions 🦁 like almost "high five" was beautiful 😍
Fun fact : Hyena always attack by bitting off the balls of the opponent. You can see the lion constantly sitting down to prevent being turned into a lioness.
Incredible video! I remember wathcing this episode of Dynasties and it instantly reminded me of Lion King. Thank you BBC Earth for such a wonderful documentary! :D

@@googledoodle3977 First of all, lions are pack animals too. Second of all hyenas are exceptional hunters who work incredibly well together. The eyes of the Lion speak everything.
Yes exactly
Yep, Red knew he was in deep, deep trouble.
Nope

Pure terror in the eyes of a male, knowing the hyenas are going for your balls first.
The lion is afraid of the situation but he decided to fight even if he might die. This is a real king. So much you can learn in such a short video
It's soul breaking to see a terrified male lion!
But at the end, so gallant and imposing like always...
I thought it was wonderful to see that disgusting predator in fear……pure bliss. Too bad it was saved.

there are many reasons why i'love hyenas and lions this is one of them
True
Very perceptive! Thanks for this. Your insight is 100x better than the audio mixing in this video.
I get the whole survival thing ..... But hyenas are nasty ......
Yes I was wondering why he kept sitting down. Very interesting
That was so intense and surreal! Stuff of nightmares!
This is so cinematic.
Something like the scene from Lion King where young Simba is surrounded by hyenas and atlast Mufasa comes with a roar.♥

This is way better than The Lion King, the live action version. Because it is real, even more so.

You wanted the live action more realistic??
That’s probably because this is real, and the Lion King is a movie?

David Attenborough meets his match in hyenas' laughter and dramatic music. I couldn't catch his commentary over the commotion. 🤷🏻
Yes, the newer BBC docs have David's voice about 20 times too low compared to the rest of the sound. BBC, turn David's voice up please!!
