Well, I was wrong on the reason being over-torqued lug nuts/bolts, but at least I wasn't wrong in not suspecting the tyre. Not that it is a guessing game, but is very useful to be able to suspect and identify a problem if like myself, one own's any kind of trailer. I think you were wise to go for steel rims. When was the last time anyone saw a lorry with alloys on? At least in Europe, there are alloys that are 'caravan suitable' and ones that are not. The fact that manufacturers discriminate, is a clue to what could happen as in your case. To satisfy your curiosity, here in Japan, all towed vehicles (everything from a small boat trailer to an articulated lorry) are all limited to 80Kmh. Rigid lorries too for that matter. Regardless of the speed limit, I am very careful that I do not exceed 90kmh. My caravan at its launch, boasted being stable up to 180kmh. Naturally, that was done on a test track and no one in their right minds would even think about towing at those speeds, but I must say that it is a very stable caravan to tow, but public roads are not test tracks and there are dangers lurking behind every corner. Trailers in Europe (Germany especially) receive a maximum permissible speed rating. Typically, 80kmh or 100kmh. I think the key word is 'maximum' and that shouldn't be confused with optimal towing speed. on an open highway. I know that far too many people put too much faith in devices such as the anti-sway couplers and electronic anti-sway devices (E.g. Al-Ko Trailer ATC or automatic trailer control) from major manufacturers such as Al-Ko and Knott. and tow at excessive speeds.

Cheers for all the information. You've definitely got a fair bit of knowledge of towing rigs

Glad you're back on the road without too much trouble. I have knee problems so I have to use my cruise control on longer trips. If I have to turn it of it takes less than a second with a flick of my thumb. I cruise on 90km/h when towing. I just feel more comfortable with that. I'm also very aware of vehicles behind me and wave them past when is safe. I will even slow down while they are passing if I need to so everyone stays safe. I'm never in that much of a hurry to get to my destination.

Good to hear you’re back up and running - as for travel speed, I tow a van that’s 1800kg / 6m long and doing 90km/h is just fine - I’ve had vans go past well over the 100km/h and often see a slight sway as they go past but thankfully for them we’re able to drive out of it. If those that have a need to drive at high speed, if possible leave earlier or just arrive late at your destination - life’s too short as it is without induced drama, so enjoy it while you can.

Been caravanning for many years, always use the cruise. Same problem had a knee replacement some years ago and it plays up on long drives.

I’ve had a Jayco (2008) have wheel studs that were just about to go…. Found it after doing a walk around, I’m led to believe from the place that sold us the new wheel studs that caravan studs are not as strong & and suffer metal fatigue sooner than say a car and of course TQing to the right specs is crucial……. He sold us Prado wheel studs for this reason , I’ll let someone answer this if they have actual engineering knowledge of this reason ?….. are car studs better than what’s used by caravan manufacturers?
As for speed…. If the road is good…. 100km & cruise control, if not I lower my speed to suit road conditions and still use cruise control and I’ll generally pull over to let trucks ( and traffic) go by.

Thanks for the follow up episode and glad it has turned out okay for you. I use cruise control on flat and straight roads as I find that we use more fuel if it’s on undulating roads. I think 90 k’s is a comfortable speed to travel at on the open roads. The torque wrench is a good tool investment, I’ve found when checking the wheel nuts a couple needed to be retorqued up.

90 klm good speed in 4th so there is less load on the transmission also.
I don’t use cruise control as I tend to manual shift my auto …..again to keep auto temps down and take load of auto transmission.

90 km/h as it allows trucks to be able to overtake without holding them up. Use cruise control when it is suitable, and try and leave the transmission in auto so the computer will decide when the trans need to change.

Don't use cruise, we generally sit on 90km.
But like Tasi and minor back roads, drive to conditions. Especially on dirt roads

Cruise control is not recommended as your ESC (hope you have ESC) will work to slow your rig if it detects sway. In response your cruise control will try to accelerate making the two systems work opposite. Your reaction is to brake which is the worse thing to do in a sway event. If you must use cruise control only do so on level straight roads in good weather. As to speed, certainly 90-95 kph has a lot less inertia than 100kph and is safer.
