The Portuguese Armed Forces are the military of Portugal. They include the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the other unified bodies and the three service branches: Portuguese Navy, Portuguese Army and Portuguese Air Force.
The President of the Republic is the head of the Portuguese military, with the title of "Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces". The management of the Armed Forces and the execution of the national defense policy is however done by the government (chaired by the Prime Minister) via its Minister of National Defense. The highest-ranking officer in the military is the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, which has operational control of the Armed Forces during peacetime and assumes their full control when a state of war exists.
The Armed Forces are charged with protecting Portugal as well as supporting international peacekeeping efforts when mandated by North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the United Nations or the European Union.
Portugal was ranked the 3rd most peaceful country in the World in the Global Peace Index 2017, presently not having significant national security issues. The Portuguese Armed Forces have been thus focused in non-military public service activities and in external military operations. Recent external operations include anti-piracy action in the Gulf of Aden, the conflicts in the Central African Republic and in Afghanistan, the peacekeeping missions in East-Timor, Lebanon, Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the air policing of Iceland and the Baltic States.
Military units and other bodies are stationed all throughout Portuguese territory, including Continental Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.
The Portuguese Armed Forces were opened to women during the early-1990s. Portugal had mandatory conscription for all able-bodied men until November 2004.

"Temos a maior zona costeira de todos os países" AHAHAHAH, vou fingir que não li isto, eu sou português, mas sê realista e/ou tem um pouco de senso e conhecimento geográfico, portugal em km's tem uma zona costeira pequeniníssima, apenas relativamente ao tamanho do país é uma porção elevada (percentagem =/= tamanho)
A única vantagem que Portugal tem é a ZEE (Zona Económica Exclusiva) que realmente é bastante extensa mesmo comparando com países maiores.
o que interessa é a política em Portugal!!!.. 💪 até dão porta-chaves e esferográficas!!!..

I've done my military 20 years ago in AA artilery and it's imho the most needed area of the portuguese Army. Chaparral were old by 20 years ago standards, and are now probably unusable against a modern day aerial threat. If we learned something recently in the world is that if you don't have strong AA defense and artillery, you lose no matter what you have.
Given our position in the EU and NATO, I think a bigger focus on the navy is more important

Forget to mention the Fuzileiros (marine corps), they are a branch of the navy.

A única forma de ter umas forças armadas mais fortes e sem destruir a economia do país no processo, é desenvolver mais o tecido empresarial e indústria na base da produção de alto valor agregado do país.
Se a isto juntarmos políticas que fomentem o crescimento demografico do país, então também vai ser possível aumentar ainda mais a capacidade motriz e da escala económica, de forma a haver mais capacidade de receita para as coisas.
Por exemplo, um porta-aviões tipo Juan carlos I é algo que não só para construção como também para manutenção, exige uma económica de maior escala e não é só com 10 milhões de habitantes que isso se atinge.
Está planeado para 2031 comprar mos F-35
ja tivemos muitos F16 muito mais do que precisamos ou temos dinheiro para manter......a Grecia fazia fronteira com mts estados nao membros da UE tinha apoios para as suas forças armadas ...Portugal encontra-se num situação mt diferente....

Men on the armed forces are the best, but much of this equipment, I won't say which, is already on reserves or decommissioned. Even procurement equipment said to be purchased in near future some is still is study phase and not de facto procurement... You did a good video with the not so faithful info gave to you and for that I'm truly sorry and ashamed. We are know as a people who does not deviate that much from factual truth and not wishful thinking truth to keep up an image we can't in fact rely on but on our wildest dreams. Try to cross sources if you do something similar next time, maybe you'll get a better approximation of our reality. Cheers!

Never realized how small and shitty the Portuguese army was.
Not really. They are a professional armed force, maximized for Portugal's needs and size in relation to NATO. It's a small number, but capable in terms of deployment and support for NATO (~27 F-16s A/B MLU, ~30 Leo 2A6s, HMVs and SFs with experience in Iraq, Afghanistan and Congo via the UN).
@@LucasFelipe356 I am sure they are professional but they have literally no equipment what so ever. In proportions that are ridiculous. They barely have enough for a single regiment in a high intensity conflict.
@@williamguarrin8399 Well, they haven't had a major direct border threat since like the beginning of the 19th century. The doctrine of action abroad is geared towards being a complementary force to NATO. Portugal's interests abroad also don't run up against another major power. There should probably be programs aimed at increasing contingents and military equipment (they have acquired the KC-390 to replace legacy C-130s and are interested in the F-35A to replace the F-16AM/BM). But in the grand scheme of things, they don't need a very large force like the Ukrainians need.

But what are you even thinking that we do? There are certain things we can’t do. And then there are other things we can do very well, and we aren’t just professional by its basic definition, we are very professional at it. Some say the best. Wouldn’t think it would be coincidence that we train many times, armed forces and police forces from other countries. And historically we always thrived in lower numbers and equipment. So things don’t really translate the way you think. Also being better equipped doesn’t do much when you lose your shiny toy and then have no idea or experience on what to do without it. We compensate what we lack in numbers and equipment with experience. A lot of it. And specially our SFs are on par with the best of the world
