    in case anyone wonders why the restaurant is named "Subway", it's a pun. In America, that type of long sandwich is called a "Submarine Sandwich" or "sub" for short. Also, Subway branded themselves on "speed", hence the arrows in the logo and the intentional connection to the train system.

      @@DBT1007 Tokyo Metro is an exception and more a brand name - probably referring to it serving Tokyo metropolis. In Japanese subway is called “chikatetsu” = underground train/railway like used here by Pekora. Most Japanese subway systems are called X chikatetsu in Japanese and X Subway in English like in Kobe, Kyōto, Nagoya, Sapporo, and so on. The operator of the Tokyo Metro is also called Tokyo Chikatetsu. Finally, Tokyo has two subway systems: the other is called Toei Subway.

    • @zarabada6125
      @zarabada6125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@DBT1007 Both terms originated in the UK.
      London's metropolitan railway opened in 1863. Similar transport systems that came later often used either "metropolitan" in the name or shortened it to "metro." Many of the later transport systems look very different from the original London model, but that was the first use of the term in this context.
      In the UK the term "subway" primarily means an underground path, often as a route that directs pedestrians to cross beneath a busy road. However, it was used as the name of Glasgow's underground train system, which opened in 1896.

      Japanese fast food is actually classy. Here in the States we have a good-enough attitude with that stuff and put in misguided additives like fruit sugar and hydrogenated oil that do more harm than they were supposed to prevent even nowadays because modern corporate America colludes to milk suffering of commoners-miseducating you about proper eating, making the good food expensive, encouraging you to eat junk so they can make you need a doctor, having the doctor put you on a diet they know you won't be able to stick to and even if you do it won't last because it's not to your taste while also doing nothing to help with factors outside your control like your terrible parents constantly mocking you for being a fattie while eating more of the same crap as you than you do and getting away with it because of metabolism from God, blaming you for not staying in control, forcing you to get special aid, covering your story on reality TV, burdening you with so many other problems all the while that you don't even have a chance to look up the real answers online.
      That all said, native Subway can still be quasi-liveable fast food if you pick the right bread. Carbs in general aren't the problem, and neither is gluten unless you actually have a sensitivity; _refined_ carbs are.

      I think the problem with the sentence is that it uses ‘subway’ as a proper noun, implying that she means Subway the restaurant and not the general word for underground trains, ‘subway’, which is a common noun. So if she asked this to someone, they would probably respond that they know of Subway the sandwich restaurant, and reinforce the idea that the word ‘subway’ mainly refers to the restaurant.

      Who's Subway?

    • @CarbonRollerCaco
      @CarbonRollerCaco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LavaSaver Another part of it is that stating knowledge of something as "knowing X" implies having significant information and competence regarding actual instances of that thing such as proficiency in an academic subject, what a place is like, how a person acts etc. while saying "know about X" implies familiarity with the general topic regardless of specific examples and "know of X" merely means knowing that something exists in some way. So to say "know subway" sounds like a straight reference to the Subway restaurant chain or perhaps an individual Subway restaurant (clarifiable with extra words as in "know that Subway") rather than subway train systems or the word itself since both would have to be clarified with extra words: "know about subway systems" "know what "subway" means"

  • @jarenwang656
    @jarenwang656 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The reason there are so many Subways in the US is because the cost to open a Subway restaurant is significantly lower than other popular fast food restaurants.
    Also, "Subway" refers to both an underground train, and the restaurant. The prefix "sub-" means to be below something, so a subway is a train that runs underground. Subway the restaurant was likely named as a pun because of their submarine sandwiches, which they are famous for.
    By the way, Gura's back entrance also includes a path to Ina's house marked "Tako Bell". And there's also a KFP nearby, so the EN server is like a fast food hotspot lol.

    • @dragonbretheren

      Sub (the sandwich) is shortened from submarine sandwich due to their shape similarity. Submarine meaning "below water". So in the case of the sandwich, it still means "below", but in a rather indirect way.
