  • Finally! Yes yes yes yes yes, this one was genuinely eye opening! Which one of these two cars would you choose to own, or simply just to drive?
    A massive thank you to Pete for letting me give his treasured RS a good kicking.

      It's not that I expected more...I was actually struggling to process what I was feeling. I think I can best describe the mk2 as being far far greater than the sum of its parts. The engine? Meh. The styling? No thanks. The noise? I could live without it. The front diff? Very special but easy to manage without. What Ford have done with the mk2 is brought all those things together and blended them really really well into something quite special. I was actually quite surprised how I felt about it as a car at the end! I can see why so many adore them...even though, as you say, the mk3 is a more capable car.

    I went from a Mk2 RS to a Mk3 RS and I have to say I miss my Mk2 RS. The engine noise the turbo hiss. Sure the mk3 is a better car to live with. Sat nav etc. But the experience of the Mk2 wasn't beaten by the mk3. Also the looks of the mk2 the"phat" rear arches just look awesome. The 5c engine sounds awesome.
    I purchased my mk2 for £22k 13k miles in 2012. I sold it in 2016 for £21k with 39k miles. One of the best purchases I will ever make.

    In my eyes the older rs is the better looking car it looks like a beast where as the new one tbh if u don't know what it is its just a focus. But you can't beat the technology and and quality of the new one, I personally do hate artificial sound being pumped into the speakers though.

    On the road the MK3 RS does not turn heads, it just looks like everything else on the road, the MK2 however has a presence and a sound that’s worth more than the sum of the specs

    • @whynotagain3639
      @whynotagain3639 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, I'd say it's the other way.
      I don't bother turning my head for the mk 2 as it's just basically a modded ST.
      It didn't even sell that well for that very reason, I'm confused at why people have the opinion you have.
      It's just an effing ST with wide arches, a bigger turbo and different clutch/gearbox.
      Which is all stuff you can do to the mk 2 ST.
      The mk3 is actually a much better car, it has 4x4 so harks back to the Cosworth days, it's not just a modded ST like the MK2.
      I also think the mk3 has much more road presence and turns more heads, it's the new Escort Cosworth.

    • @jayrave4
      @jayrave4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why Notagain the MK2 didn’t sell that well?! It sold out its entire UK allocation (c.4000 units)!! In fact it sold far more here than anywhere else! I appreciate how you feel about the car is subjective, but it’s way more than a “modded ST” and if you’re going to hit it with that stick, the MK4 ST shares the same engine as the MK3 RS. The MK2 RS was the last class-leading hot hatch Ford produced - the MK3 trailed both the A45 and RS3. Anyway, the proof of the pudding is in the residuals - MK3s have suffered way more depreciation than the MK2 did at the same point, and this will only continue given how many were sold here and the well-documented reliability issues. And please do not compare the MK3 to the mighty Escort Cosworth - a road car with an engine of true racing pedigree that could safely handle double the power.

      Each to their own!
      I think you'll find most true petrol heads, who actually enjoy driving and have owned 4x4 and rear wheel drive sports cars would have the same opinion as me.
      Compared to an all wheel drive or rear wheel drive car, the MK2 RS handles like a piece of shit, all that torque steer is just not fun or enjoyable at all.
      The MK3 RS handles like a fast car should...
      End of conversation!
      You can't really compare an on rails 4x4 with a cack front wheel drive car and say the front wheel car is better.
      I suppose you're one of those people that take their rear windscreen wiper off too, as it looks nicer apparently. Lol

  • @waynester71
    @waynester71 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Future residuals will be telling... there were fewer mk2 RS cars built/imported.. plus, the Mk2 really was the last of the proper hardcore looking rally weapon. Wide arches, bonnet vents, 5 cylinders, lairy colours (mine is green) etc.... But I hate to be a ‘this is Better than the other’ kind of guy. The Mk3 was built as a more global world wide platform. My RS was around £25+> new, and yet its now 8 years old and still cost me £23k last year... Mines a keeper. It’s currently running REVO 2 with a Milltek exhaust and decat, but as I only drove 300 miles last year in my mine as a 2nd car....I have purchased a KMS Section 18 to fully realise that Quattroesque noise. Just need to get around to fitting it.
    One other thing.. we recently moved house, and I followed my fiancées Audi A1 on the A1M.....and she said my RS with its xenons on looked very intimidating in the rear view mirror.
    Edit: Yep, I’m guilty of looking at my RS more than driving it..eg, 300 miles in 12 months. Oh the shame.

    I have been waiting months for you to do this video , so thank you. Although I anticipated what your thoughts might be, in so much as you still preferring your own car , ( Technically it is a better car ) The MK3 RS is a more polished , practical easier car to live with on a daily basis, the the traction available makes it a very capable , easy car to drive .
    I did my mechanic apprenticeship in the mid 80's and was a RS mechanic working on the iconic Sierra Cossworth etc, for me the MK2 is closer to the spirit of those earlier Ford RS models, I think its probably the best looking car made in the last 20 years ! and the noise from the 5 cylinder makes the hairs on my arms stand up ! . I also like the fact that you do have to think about how hard you push ( especially in the wet ) and you cant just plant the throttle whenever you want . Sometimes more polished , capable cars are less fun to drive. You only have to see some views on the Golf R , hugely fast , just lacking in excitement .

    Excellent video. It seems the Mk2 RS is a more raw driving experience whereas the Mk3 is a refined one. Interesting to hear the Mk3 RS is now going up in value despite the engine recall issues. I put it down to more demand for sleeper hatches in the 2nd hand market. Cheers.

    Great video Mark. Pity about the sound in the Mk3 I found it really hard to hear the comments. My story. As an owner of a Capri RS3100 (yes one of those 248 built) and having to sell it to purchase a house 30 years ago. I promised myself to one day buy another RS. 2010 I bought a new Ultimate Green Mk2. Still own it done 35k Kms. Last year I bought the Mk3 in NB. The mk3 is my daily the mk2 my weekender. Absolutely love the technology of the new car. Feels so planted and with a Dreamscience map gives it a little more punch. When the new RS comes out I might but it and trade the Mk3. But the car I could never sell is the Mk2. The presence of that car is amazing. It's more analogue than the digital Mk3, more raw. It's a real event to drive it, particularly with it's bluefin stage 1 tune, makes it a more dramatic drive.

    I’ve been into fast fords for the past 25 years, and (Cosworth’s aside) I think think Ford lost its way throughout nineties and early noughties, and conceded loads of ground to the ricers who fully capitalised off the back of the success of their rally cars.
    However IMO The Mk2 Focus ST, and subsequent RS, brought Ford back into the game, and I genuinely believe that the Mk2 Focus is to this generation of Ford enthusiasts what the Mk2 Escort was to me when I first started driving. It is also iconic as its one of the last fast fords released before complex electronics became the norm, which for me makes it much more of a drivers car, and a far better, and more economical, modding / repair platform for the layman......if that’s your thing.
    That said the Mk3 is probably easier to live with in terms of comfort and practicality.
    Great vid 👍🏻

    Lag is overstated as a bad thing... it gives Turbo cars some of their "personality". You can drive any Turbo car (that doesn't have a hybrid system) and feel turbo lag, and if you don't want it, you select a lower gear. With the Mountune upgrade I can drive My Fiesta ST and feel enough Turbo lag to make it fun. The 5 cylinder engines in the Mark II was a great little engine.

      If a car is too easy to drive/handles like it's on rails you're simply not driving it fast enough. The mk3 if used in anger really moves about, more so than my old Fiesta ST! I think you're probably right about future values...we'll see if mine has held on to anything like as much value as Pete's has when mine reaches a similar age.

    After testing both mk2 and mk3 RS, I would have the mk2 as everyday car, and mk3 as the track weapon. The mk2 is easier to drive at normal pace, the suspension is less punishing, and the engine torque is so sweet. The sound is on another level. Also the interior and boot room are better on the mk2, even having less doors. The mk3 is a lot less comfortable, you are bouncing in the seat all the time, even at legal speeds. The main controls are harder to operate, steering, clutch... Interior space is not very good, boot space is pretty poor. The performance is not that impressive, the engine doesn't feel that alive for it's power. BUT, traction is SUPERB. The mk2 best point is the looks and 5 pot personality. The mk3 best point is chassis/traction. Very different cars. I would have a mk2 with the mk3 awd system if it was available.

      @@robertyates6913 the rs mk2 with lowering springs rides much worse than with the oem springs. According to friends with them. I tested a totally oem car. The only thing better about the mk2 is the engine, which I already have in my Volvo S60R. The Mk3 is so much better in EVERY other respect. I liked the look of the mk2 when it was released but now I think it just looks ridiculous.
    Drifting is the most fun thing you can do in a car and the mk3 is the only hot hatch with (the exception of the m140i which is beyond ugly) that does this.
    Fwd is pretty crap, I have a great fwd car too (R26) but its no match for a good awd car.
