Fantastic gear choices! I have the same set up with exception for the pack. I have an Osprey and a Gregory packs, a bit heavier but I like the extra support. Also, I have the Outdoor Research Helium rain pants (5.6 oz) to go with my OR Helium II rain jacket. For some reason I cannot get into Altras, they hurt my feet in the back even though I bought them slightly bigger. I had to go back to Solomon's or Merrill's.
Thank you!! I do have another pack that I use for heavier loads as well, it's a Granite Gear Blaze AC 60 and I love it!!! I used it this Summer in Colorado because I had a bear bin with me and it carries it so much better. Sorry to hear that the Altra's don't work for you but I totally get that everybody has to find what works for their feet, that's exactly how I stumbled into the Altra's. I say definitely use what works for you!!
Really digging these videos. Love the Marshall. I’ve been doing the same thing as far as trying to go more ultralight. I’ve been hesitant to do any videos on it but I think it is a good subject. I really enjoy doing 20 miles per day or more, if I can. The only way I can even attempt that is with a lighter pack weight. Here’s to getting old!
Ultralight is definitely the way to go. When I did my first thru-hike on the OHT it took me six weeks to recover. I killed my knees on those crazy downhills and was carrying at least 40+ pounds. I will never do that again, and that's when I started slowly swapping all of my gear starting with the small items and working up to the big three. I just bought a Zpacks Nero so now I have my big three from over 10 pounds down to a little over 3 pounds. I can walk farther and be in less pain. Totally worth it if you want to crush the miles!!!!
Hello!! I wasn't sure where New Blaine was so I looked it up and what a great spot between the Ouachitas and the Ozarks. The older I get the more I want to get out of the city. Take Care!
Thanks for sharing your load out Paul. Those higher mileage days sound good sometimes but about 14 to 15 mile days sure makes it more enjoyable. A few vitamin I before bedtime and I'm ready for the next day. A big plus on the Duplex is you can put it up in the rain and stay 90% dry on the inside. I've never managed to do that with my double wall tents. Man, I'm looking forward to seeing your trip, and wondering about the teaser you left us with about the next trip !!! Happy New Year and may 2020 be full of adventure. Atb, Tony
Hey Tony, Thanks as always for watching these vids. I agree about the high mileage, it's cool when you're doing it but when you feel like you've been beaten up later it's just not worth it (for me). I have never enjoyed a hike so much as this one with no pressure of any high-mileage days. I don't think I did a day over 17 and most were around 15 or less. I'm going to be sticking to this mileage plan since I recovered in about a week from this hike where in the past it's been 6 weeks to 6 months. Announcement coming soon on the next hike!!! Happy 2020 to and your family!!
I slept with my food every night. My only precaution was I tried to eat far away from my tent. I've slept with my food on every trip except in Colorado and few spots in California and I'v never had any trouble.
You probably have this link....but if ya don't......good place to pick out lesser known trails.....en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-distance_trails_in_the_United_States
I have looked at this before but right now I think I have about 30 trails that I want to do. They are all about 200 to 500 miles long. So many trails and so little time!!! Thanks!!!

Thanks for sharing! How did you store your food bag? PCT method hang? Trying to figure out what is necessary on the OT!
