  • Did you know that there are Welsh towns in Patagonia, Argentina?! In today's video, we take a day trip to Gaiman in the province of Chubut, a town that was founded in 1874 by some of the first settlers in arrive to Argentina. We have lunch at a cosy pub, visit a few museums, hike through an old railroad tunnel, and of course, enjoy a delicious Welsh afternoon tea complete with scones, cream pie and Welsh cake! We hope to visit more Welsh towns in Argentina as we continue our travels further west.
To get to Gaiman from Trelew take 28 de Julio bus by loading a transportation card. With buses coming about once every hour. Our visit to Gaiman was one of our favorite day trips in Patagonia. We enjoyed it so much we decided to come back a second day which will be an episode coming out soon.

WELSH TOWN in Patagonia, Argentina + Welsh AFTERNOON TEA at Ty Gwyn in GAIMAN, Chubut 🍰
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a travel vlogging couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
We had the privilege of traveling around Argentina for nearly 3 months from January- April 2019 on a trip covering a large section of the country.
We kicked things off with several days in Buenos Aires where we were joined by Audrey's parents eating and sightseeing around some of our favourite neighbourhoods in the city. We then flew from Buenos Aires to Cordoba where we spent a couple of weeks in the Sierras of Cordoba visiting both La Cumbrecita and Villa General Belgrano with highlights including hiking and delicious German and Swiss cuisine.
From Cordoba, we then travelled a considerable distance on an overnight bus to Mar Del Plata just in time for a special food festival called Feria Masticar featuring the best of Argentine food and wine. We spent several days enjoying beaches and seafood before heading south to Patagonia to visit the province of Chubut.
While on the Atlantic side of Chubut we visited Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, Trelew, Gaiman and Dolavon. To summarize our time in this area, we had incredibly close encounters with wildlife including penguins, sea lions and guanacos while also experiencing Welsh culture in Argentina.
Our time in Patagonia continued as we headed from east to west trading more barren landscapes for thick forests, impressive mountains and magnificent lakes. We spent significant time in both Esquel and El Bolson with day trips to visit Trevelin, Parque Nacional Los Alerces, Cholila and Lago Puelo. Highlights included sailing, hiking, riding vintage trains and partaking in the national asado festival.
We finished visiting Patagonia with time spent in Villa La Angostura, San Martin De Los Andes and Bariloche where we enjoyed more stunning scenery and hiking. On our way back to Buenos Aires, we took the Tren Patagonia to Las Grutas before meeting up with Audrey's dad again.
To finish off our trip in Argentina, we spent more time in the capital and later Mendoza where we got to experience wine tourism to its fullest extent. Overall, we had an amazing time travelling around Argentina having only scratched the surface of this vast and diverse country.
Overall our Argentina travel series explores cities, small towns that are off-the-beaten-path, and scenic attractions with a strong emphasis on Argentina cuisine and local culture.

The Spanish and Portuguese didnt like the climate much plus there was a large native American tribe they just didnt want to deal with so Patagonia was left to the British who liked the climate and were looking for new places to settle in the new world..

@@theodoresmith5272 It was the Welsh not the British. There was no British government organisation behind the settlements. The Welsh colonists wanted to create a colony free from what they felt was English oppression in their country which was the motivation and threat to the Welsh language and culture. A "little Wales beyond Wales".

@@aldozilli1293 you are half right. I'm welsh and yes us Welsh did move there for that reason as you suggested.
The "British" so us Welsh, and Scots, Irish and English did also move to Argentina to develop railways and natural resources. Us British had a major influence in Argentina at one point.
Argentina used to drive on the left like the British. When the Perons came into power after ww2 British influence wained.

I'm welsh. I noticed that you said that you visited Cardiff. I haven't seen the video, and assuming you haven't, you should consider visiting us in North Wales. Its very very different to Southern Wales and is noticably more celtic. Too much is made of Cardiff.
Also I'm shocked you didnt try any Welsh cakes or Barabrith.
There was also a Welsh colony in Brazil and another "colony" in Pensylvania due to the coal and slate mines.
In Pensylvania there's a county of Gwynedd and other Welsh place names. Amtrak also has a station called "North wales".
Another Welsh influence in America would be the Cockerell on kellogs. There were a Lot of Quakers in Wales.
Not forgetting the architect Frank Lloyd Wright was Welsh decent too.

    • @jgonz260
      @jgonz260 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It is so not weird. Many Europeans (other than the Spanish) explored and settled in South America over the centuries, including Germans, English, Italians, Portuguese, Eastern European, and even Asians. These facts are not widely known by the world in general simply because the main media (dominated by the US and the UK) stereotypes South and Latin Americans in general. For example, Alfredo Stroessner (a Bavarian descendant) was the dictator of Paraguay for several decades until 1988, and Fujimori (a Japanese descendant) was the president of Peru as well. Half of the population of Argentina is Italian in origin; the largest Japanese population outside Japan is in Brazil, etc. In Chile, the name of O'Higgins, an Irish immigrant and liberator, is prominently displayed in public plazas; Juan O'Leary was one of the main literary writers in the country of Paraguay, after which a downtown plaza is named...I can continue but I hope you get the point,

Thanks Brendan! It is fascinating because there are a few towns like this to visit in Patagonia. We're using a G9 and GH5. The G9 has really come down in price. Have you visited Wales before? We've only been to Cardiff. We'd love to see more of the countryside.

@@samuelandaudrey the GH5 is an awesome camera! 👍 I've been all over Wales yes, beautiful part of the UK. One place I would highly recommend is Llandudno, North Wales as it's a real traditional British seaside town 😃

My grandmother's house in snowdonia was just like that even in the 1980's spring for water and a range for cooking. I'm only 45 and I remember lots of houses like that except they had slate roofs.
They've all gone now and snowdonia is just a theme park for the rich now.

Ty Gwyn is Welsh for White House. I'd be interested to visit Welsh Patagonia but as it's literally on the far side of the world it's a long way for an afternoon tea. The Cream Pie (or Tart) is a particular speciality developed by the Welsh settlers in Patagonia. I have a small Welsh book (written in English) called "A book of Welsh Country Puddings and Pies" by Bobby Freeman, it has a recipe for it and a little note on the origins.

It is worthy of mention that the name Gaiman is not of Welsh origin, but
Tehuelche (Patagonian natives) a people that is almost extinct, sadly., and it means "sharpeninig stone" (piedra de afilar).
Many names of places in Patagonia are of Tehuelche origin, like, Esquel or Chaltén. The famous local myth that claims if you eat the Calafate fruit you will return some day, is of Tehuelche origin.
