    Thank you for the candid talk. I'm getting my first Malinois soon and I know in theory what they need I've spent time with the breed, but this one will be mine and I'm nervous but incredibly excited.

    Spot on!!
    I got my female puppy at 6.5 weeks from a breeder and immediately had 3 puppy sessions. Very beneficial, BUT by the time we finished the three 1 hoursessions once a week, it was obvious I personally could not provide the guidance and training she needed. She had no bad habits but her intelligence required much more than I possessed. She is now in a 6 week, board and train, which I believe in the long run will be best for both the dog and owner. Yes she is already missed, but short term pain is long term gain. Thanks for your words of wisdom and encouragement.

    Very spot on! We were going to do basic puppy classes but then decided to do a 2 week board and train with our Mal. It was SO beneficial and we are working with his trainer regularly with follow up lessons and he will be going back for another 3 week board and train to build off leash confidence/e-collar training. I have had that "wall of frustration" moment a lot with my pup and sometimes I feel we are in over our heads but he has come a long way and is only 5 months old. We also are beginning Schutzhund and will be dabbling in other sports to give him a job.

    Couldn’t agree more. So many people think they can bring a new dog home and “train it”. They fail, and say things like “he/she is the stupidest dog”, when in reality they are stupid. Training a dog (or anything else), is not a birthright. “You are not a professional trainer”, seek out those in the know and never stop learning.

    I’m a new subscriber and I love watching your videos before I purchase my malinois, I plan on sending him to basic obedience and then off leash training and everyone I have spoken to said these dogs aren’t great family dogs or companions, My children are grown so it’s just me, so I want a dog, I currently own a bully but have my eyes on these dogs, the trainer I know owns one and he highly recommends this breed but he said they are very bitey and love to bite

    Thanks for a great channel! I'm planning to get a Mal puppy within the next year, and I just have a question about the whole crate concept in your house. Do you mainly use it for puppy, do your adult dogs get to choose when they go there and when they come out? Do they sleep on there? How often are they in their crates as in locked up in a day? I understand they like it there it's just i want a dog that can be part of our family and trained for personal protection. I live in South Africa and hubby works away so a dog that can protect is the main thing I need in my next dog. And what good is a protection dog when it is locked up when you need it?
    I guess what I'm asking is will we eventually be able to have our Mal out in the house with us most of the time, sleeping on his bed in my room. I'm not planning to have more than one, we have two older dogs that will probably not be with us for much longer.
    Thanks for a great channel so far you have been sooo encouraging and a very different voice than a lot of other owners and breeders. Really appreciate it!

    What about an actual playpen outside of the crate..?

    • @maldad9073
      @maldad9073 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although it may work, one long term advantage of a crate is that it becomes a "safe space" for the dog that becomes a favorite place to be. A crate also has benefits for settling the dog down when company comes over, or workmen in your house.

    • @MaligatorMom
      @MaligatorMom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve used these larger indoor pens and think they’re a great idea but not as a replacement to the crate. This tool works in addition to crate training. I used a puppy playpen (the one I used is linked on my products page on my website maligatormom.com) as a way for my older dogs and the puppy to coexist during the slow introduction period because it created a barrier between them. It was also nice to just drop the puppy in there occasionally as I found myself busy with one small task or another. Keep in mind, these wire play pens won’t contain a Malinois puppy for long. They’ll be knocking them down, climbing over them, or chewing through them by the time they’re a few months old.
