Some women are just not cut out to be wives and mothers, just like some men are not cut out to be husbands and fathers, and if they are forced to try to be something they're not, it will only make them resentful, which, like it or not, will come out in some form of abuse, either to themselves or to those they are *supposed* to love. If they *know* that as singles /childless singles they are better people - kinder, happier, content with life and supportive of loved ones - and if they know they could not fulfill that potential if they were married or had children, then it's not society's place to prevent them from being the best people they can be.
Oprah you said it just right. I respect you for being your own woman. If you were married you could have not been all you could be like you are now. Also having no children is the right choice you have made, because you have a whole world of children, some men and women you have helped raised on some level. Thank you for being so real. If Oprah's happy staying single, that's her choice. She will never be another divorce statistic, get involved in bitter child custody disputes, or raise her in a single-parent household!
Many women in today's world don't feel the need to get married. having a husband and children is not every woman's ultimate dream. fortunately we live in a world that is allowing us more and more to have different dreams, different goals. That is progress.

Men are either cheating, there is either verbal, physical and mental abuse. If not for the alimony most of them would be divorced. There are very few good marriages and if someone finds it then one should do whatever it takes to stay in it. Marriage is important if you want to raise a kid in healthy environment. The way all societies were originally set up, women are defined by their looks and relationship status. Most will spend their entire lives focusing on, and trying to get validation for those two things, or else they lose. This is why you hear all those jokes about age, looks, and being single - only on women. *They conform, and often erase their individuality, because marriage is a necessity to them in most societies, never was for men* . But in modern societies, we're seeing generations of self-realized women for the 1st time in history. Not a dozen accomplished women, GENERATIONS. Marriage now is an option for us, no longer a necessity. I don't think marriage itself is the issue (the vow to commit for a lifetime, and build a family), but the world's idea of what a wife is toxic. *Very few couples have found the balance between some traditional elements that have their place, without taking them to extremes, and allowing each spouse to be themselves* . Throughout human history we've been going on extremes. Misogyny in traditional societies is one extreme, misandry now called "neo-feminism" is another. *We can romanticize the past or highly traditional countries all we want, healthy marriages were never the norm anywhere at any point in time in the history of mankind* . Divorce just wasn't as allowed as it is today. But our nature remained the same. We all know around us people who have been married 30+ years and are bitter and unhappy about it. A healthy marriage is a blessing, that very very very few people have the capacity to create, PERIOD. Including most of those who want it.

I am sorry that I am differing with you. Arranged marriages in fact don't work for many. Whether it is an arranged or a love marriage, most of the marriages become disastrous and the couples is those marriages lead miserable lives together just for the sake of the society or their children. Of course there are a lucky few couples that end up in happy marriages but they are rare (according to me).
This completely makes perfect sense too me! When you choose to be with someone you have to almost sacrifice being your own individual to become something or bond to someone and be something you aren't. & I CANNOT DO THAT. I'm not bound to nobody. I like to be free. Not that being free means sleeping around with everybody but even if you do that is your free will choice. Everybody dreams of being with someone and live happily ever after and I completely am the opposite. I love myself and being alone. At the same time I wouldn't mind being with someone if we are on the same path and think alike and have the same goals in a sense. I find that most people, regardless of gender, tend to seek out distractions (from themselves) in whatever form they can find it. Oprah feels uncomfortable, she really felt the cultural gap enormously. It seemed they were laughing at her. But she is such an adult and knew how to speak and focus on the respect for the foreign audience. That was a challenge!!

I think being a good person is the MAIN (and if not) ONLY reason why you should be allowed into heaven (if heaven/hell is even real). I am a believer in God don't get me wrong but I think having a beautiful soul no matter what you believe in should grant you into heaven. Oprah gave over a million pounds to charity and she never boosts or even speaks about it. She is a teacher to others, a positive influence, a black woman from a modest background who has acquired a successful career in TV. I think Oprah is amazing and if there is a heaven then Oprah has her place reserved. She is a beautiful person and has touched people's lives in a positive way.

Only in India, and certain other developing and under-developed countries, we have this social pressure of getting married. I mean what one does in their life, is their choice, who is anyone else to even comment on it. Unless someone is doing something illegal, I don't think anybody has the right to even comment on anything. But we have all the time in the world to comment about everything and judge everyone. That's why we are third world because we love wasting our time doing unproductive discussion and gossiping about friends and neighbours.
I am married and I am my own woman and my husband is his own man. It is one of the best things that god created for men and woman. I love myself but I know what god did for us so me having a man, husband and adorable father to our children makes every moment precious. He has a life and he does all the things he wants to do and I am still his devoted wife. He did not make a man to be alone! So that is where we come in. She's not the marriage kind. Marriage is a gift and some people are built for it and some are not. I AM built for marriage. And so I AM able to flourish in marriage. It is an life that serves me well.

Most people that prefer not to be married do so mainly, because they do not want to be accountable to someone other that themselves. I believe in marriage and look at it differently. I chose to be married not to be accountable, but to have a helpmate and be a helpmate, and have children.

Why is that even a question? Why do people ask that kind of stuff unless you wanna get with them or something? It's taken decades for some of my own family to believe that I am happy as a single woman, too. They assumed I must be putting on a brave face or something, because _they_ couldn't be happy without a significant other, and assumed it _must_ be true of me, too! Recently one of my sisters who was wont to jump to this conclusion about me, got divorced because she couldn't take having to be something she wasn't all the time and yet feeling so disconnected from her husband with whom she used to be good friends. I thought at least now she would finally understand why I'm content to be single - but the first thing she asks me once the divorce is settled and complete and she can think about other things, is, "Are you a lesbian?" REALLY?
One thing I have in common with Oprah is that I've not been married either. I think she felt put on the spot by the question and hadn't really thought about how to easily answer a question like that. There are many pros and cons to being married, just as there are pros and cons to being single. Marriage does not necessarily mean you “give up yourself” as Oprah put it. There are many successful marriages where each person keeps their individuality. And yes, a big no to arranged marriages.

while this is an articulate answer it is not a rational answer and oprah has been asked this question several times and i have never heard her give a consistent answer...great success n wealth are both a great gift n a great curse.....many women's lives are defined by their,husband n children.....oprah found her fulfillment in the success of the oprah winfery show and the wealth it brought her.....so she did not need to look for this fulfilment in a husband or child which is why she has neither.....she has stated many times that if she had a child the child would not be mentally well balanced because she would not have had the time to spend with the child.....and another time she mentioned that stedman is a very traditional man and if they married he would expect her to be home at a certain time and with her schedule that woule be impossible.bottom line is she found her fulfillment in the oprah winfery show but a family becomes a greater legacy than money, the oprah winfery show or her own network.

Exactly why I never got married, I inherited over 3 million dollars in coins and precious medals. My father always had me run his apartment complexes so I got used to hearing and dealing with woman lies and the lower classes tricks. I, at 57, never got married or had children either (made up my mind at 15) because we're already overpopulated and it costs a lot of money and nerves to raise children. I think if I had had children in my twenties I would have killed them and I certainly didn't have the funds to give a child what it needs.
I'm now 'on the other side of 40', as I like to say, & still happily unmarried & child-free. I made my decision at 12. In my case, it wasn't even really something that I decided; it was rather a truth I was blessed to (so early) uncover about myself. I didn't have to consider social/financial variables. The DESIRE to marry & assume the role of a mother, whether to my own kids or to others, has ALWAYS been entirely ABSENT. I was happy to discover videos about other women & young girls in whom this desire to birth a child is also absent. And yet I, a kid at heart, do enjoy interacting with kids--to a point. Their natural capacity for joy & ability to be fully present always inspires me, though never to the point where I want to be around them 24/7. A wife's life, moreover, a mother's life, as I have observed, is not her own; it is an unceasing series of interruptions from sunup to sundown & beyond. True, many women feel in their bones their own destinies as wives & mothers, & they wouldn't know what to do with themselves otherwise. But I know who I am & who I am not. My time is my own. And what writer (like myself) ever has enough time?

*We can romanticize the past or highly traditional countries all we want, healthy marriages were never the norm anywhere at any point in time in the history of mankind* . Divorce just wasn't as allowed as it is today. But our nature remained the same. We all know around us people who have been married 30+ years and are bitter and unhappy about it. I am sorry that I am differing with you. Arranged marriages in fact don't work for many. Whether it is an arranged or a love marriage, most of the marriages become disastrous and the couples is those marriages lead miserable lives together just for the sake of the society or their children. Of course there are a lucky few couples that end up in happy marriages but they are rare (according to me).
This completely makes perfect sense too me! When you choose to be with someone you have to almost sacrifice being your own individual to become something or bond to someone and be something you aren't. & I CANNOT DO THAT. I'm not bound to nobody. I like to be free. Not that being free means sleeping around with everybody but even if you do that is your free will choice. Everybody dreams of being with someone and live happily ever after and I completely am the opposite. I love myself and being alone. At the same time I wouldn't mind being with someone if we are on the same path and think alike and have the same goals in a sense. She is a teacher to others, a positive influence, a black woman from a modest background who has acquired a successful career in TV. Only in India, and certain other developing and under-developed countries, we have this social pressure of getting married. I mean what one does in their life, is their choice, who is anyone else to even comment on it. If the difference between living together and marrying is just a piece of paper, why do so many couples that won't marry say that if they had gotten married would be divorced by now? How does that piece of paper make you divorce when without it you stayed together.
I respect Oprah Winfrey's reply to the question, and it makes a lot of sense to me.
Most people that prefer not to be married do so mainly, because they do not want to be accountable to someone other that themselves. I believe in marriage and look at it differently. I chose to be married not to be accountable, but to have a helpmate and be a helpmate, and have children.

It's taken decades for some of my own family to believe that I am happy as a single woman, too. They assumed I must be putting on a brave face or something, because _they_ couldn't be happy without a significant other, and assumed it _must_ be true of me, too!
Recently one of my sisters who was wont to jump to this conclusion about me, got divorced because she couldn't take having to be something she wasn't all the time and yet feeling so disconnected from her husband with whom she used to be good friends. I thought at least now she would finally understand why I'm content to be single - but the first thing she asks me once the divorce is settled and complete and she can think about other things, is, "Are you a lesbian?" REALLY?

It’s way way better to stay unmarried rather than marrying a wrong person.....and it’s really difficult to find a right person to be married with.
One thing I have in common with Oprah is that I've not been married either. I think she felt put on the spot by the question and hadn't really thought about how to easily answer a question like that.
Some people here on the comments page are quite cruel and rude though I can see how some are questioning her sincerity due to her not so smooth response (unlike on her shows)

while this is an articulate answer it is not a rational answer and oprah has been asked this question several times and i have never heard her give a consistent answer...great success n wealth are both a great gift n a great curse.....many women's lives are defined by their,husband n children.....oprah found her fulfillment in the success of the oprah winfery show and the wealth it brought her.....so she did not need to look for this fulfilment in a husband or child which is why she has neither.....she has stated many times that if she had a child the child would not be mentally well balanced because she would not have had the time to spend with the child.....and another time she mentioned that stedman is a very traditional man and if they married he would expect her to be home at a certain time and with her schedule that woule be impossible.bottom line is she found her fulfillment in the oprah winfery show but a family becomes a greater legacy than money, the oprah winfery show or her own network.

Exactly why I never got married, I inherited over 3 million dollars in coins and precious medals. My father always had me run his apartment complexes so I got used to hearing and dealing with woman lies and the lower classes tricks. I never had any kids but you know what its better than giving up half of everything you ever made and have because you couldn't make it work. Im 32 years old and I have seen so much. I have seen men actually go crazy because of this, its sad. If a woman does it she is a strong woman. In past times marriage is like everything like after 25yrs society put questions on ur character etc if u r unmarried but that was in past time....
I, at 57, never got married or had children either (made up my mind at 15) because we're already overpopulated and it costs a lot of money and nerves to raise children. I think if I had had children in my twenties I would have killed them and I certainly didn't have the funds to give a child what it needs.
I'm now 'on the other side of 40', as I like to say, & still happily unmarried & child-free. I made my decision at 12. In my case, it wasn't even really something that I decided; it was rather a truth I was blessed to (so early) uncover about myself. I didn't have to consider social/financial variables. The DESIRE to marry & assume the role of a mother, whether to my own kids or to others, has ALWAYS been entirely ABSENT. I was happy to discover videos about other women & young girls in whom this desire to birth a child is also absent. And yet I, a kid at heart, do enjoy interacting with kids--to a point. Their natural capacity for joy & ability to be fully present always inspires me, though never to the point where I want to be around them 24/7. A wife's life, moreover, a mother's life, as I have observed, is not her own; it is an unceasing series of interruptions from sunup to sundown & beyond. True, many women feel in their bones their own destinies as wives & mothers, & they wouldn't know what to do with themselves otherwise. But I know who I am & who I am not. My time is my own. And what writer (like myself) ever has enough time?

Since she rejects God as God, so there is no need to obey and submit to God's laws. And that is why Oprah said she is her own woman, meaning in her there is a man and she is the woman. Do you think A specy like Oprah who said that Jesus is not the only way to God - maybe her wealth and her money, i think - would accept to submit to the will and the rules of God? There’s no other woman I admire the most as compared to Oprah. Everything about her authenticity, living the truest highest, truest expression of herself gives me life. I’ve found myself in this space many times agonizing over the idea of yet to be wedded only because I think, by societal standards I feel pressure to be. Over time this idea has deluded me and gradually faded away. As I entered my early thirties, I find myself just fine with being where I’m at. Fine with everything because I had to be honest with myself by askin ‘is it really the marriage I desire or life of stability?’

I have been married for 24 years and my husband has always allowed me to be fully me. I have never had to cease manifesting the fullness of my purpose because I'm a wife. If anything, he believed in me long before I believed in myself. He has always fanned the flames of my dreams. I feel a but confused that she and others have such a limited definition of marriage, especially in this dispensation. I'm not sure why there is an assumption that you can't find a man who loves you and allows you to be your own woman. Some may say it's rare, but it's definitely possible.
