Tom Scott has some new competition. I know you collab'd with him. I'm just saying I enjoy this channel as much as his. It's a really interesting topic presented really well. Also, I wonder how much of the underground infrastructure is still there. Does the city still use the same sewers? I doubt it, right? Capacity and age would probably make them obsolete.

Goodness me! I don't think I'm quite on his level so he doesn't need to worry! However, being compared with someone I look up to is wonderful so I thank you gracefully :-) x
I'm not sure if the city uses the same sewers, I doubt this too. Interestingly enough, Sheffield holds some old Victorian storm drains though! E.G: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3177399/What-lurks-beneath-Incredible-underground-pictures-network-Victorian-storm-drains-city-Sheffield.html

@@EliseFreshwaterBlizzard oh how I do enjoy exploring old waterworks and drains vicariously through others! A channel I came across that explores Sheffield (and beyond) is Martin Zero. I recommend his content for those who also enjoy them. th-cam.com/users/MartinZerovideos greetings from MI, USA.

Really enjoy these short interesting bits of history. I have a mental image of a streetlight flaring like a firework 😋.

like using tip gas to run generators for electricity as we do today in stead of burning it off very cool info thank you

  • @nigellemons2171

Not all strictly true though. The gas light was powered by the mains gas supply, they lamps did not burn the sewer gas. The heat generated by the gas mantle caused the sewer gas to be drawn up the lamp post by convection so ventilating the sewers, and the 700 Fahrenheit temperature destroyed a lot of the noxious gases.
Still connected to the same sewers in use today, although now not needed due to more modern methods of sewer ventilation

    Loving the “fart lamps” 😆
When I was at uni at Exeter at the turn of the millennium, there was a pub by the quay called the Welcome Inn that was still gaslit - it was lit more prosaically however, from the nearby gas works!

I'll admit that until your videos, my only mental image of Sheffield was "industrial revolution hellhole". The fart lamps are great, and it looks like there's a lot more interesting stuff hidden in the city!

Nice video :) Sheffield is such an underated city. People only think of the city's historical industry and presume it's ugly or dirty, but it has so much history and interesting architecture as a consequence of it's past. Definitely a city on the up with regards to investment and development too :)

@@EliseFreshwaterBlizzard I suffer from chronic pain pain, most of my days I'm miserable, you help me a lot by districting me, making me think about other things besides the pain.
Your longer video about caving are a blessing, even though they make me a bit sad that my body is too much of a piece of garbage to even try caving.
But I accept my condition and I'm happy to live caving through your videos.
Also this short ingesting Tom Scott-esque videos are great and I'm sure you're going to get better and better with every video.

Freshwater-Blizzard is just a sick name.

Thank you for opening up to me about that and I really can't believe I can add value to your life in that way, but I feel blessed and grateful that I can !! Genuinely that is so kind and lovely to hear. It sucks that you have chronic pain and that must be so difficult for you. You must be so strong. @@EliseFreshwaterBlizzard @Elise Freshwater-Blizzard wow, people tell me my real name is dope but I can't compete at all.
Anyway, I don't know if I am really strong, I just let life drag me around because I'm too tired of never ever being able to not feel pain, and doctors are so mean with people who have an invisible illness, my problem is fibromyalgia so they always tell me it's all in my head, I don't have cancer so I shouldn't complain/feel so much pain/take opioids for my pain, and besides telling me it's all in my head they tell me I fake my illness and I'm just seeking drugs.
Three weeks ago I saw this doctor, she was the worst doctor I've ever seen, she kept making fun of me (for example when I told her that even just being touched can make me feel pain, especially in my belly area, she started repeating FIVE TIMES "Oh so you don't even let a nice girl touch you? Hahahaha" and it was so humiliating, when I told her "No, if I don't have my meds or my pain is too high I don't let anyone touch me, and this fact gave me several problems in the pas-" she interrupts me yelling: "I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR SEXUAL LIFE", so I just lost it, punch her desk, insulted her and cry on the floor of the hospital (ew), the nurses helped me to sit, gave me some water, the doctor came back to me telling she wants to help, I go back to her office and she takes my therapy away, from 140mg a day to 0mg a day, I lose my s*it again and go cry outside, then I, go home and decide to end it, some friends noticed I was going to do some stupid stuff though and decided to call for help, police and paramedics show to my house, they calm me down and ask me if I wanted to see a psychiatrist, I, accept, it took me ten hours to see him.
It was the lowest point of my entire life, so after that I can't really see me as strong...
Anyway, you're really helping me recover from this traumatic event which I'm sorry for having shared, I don't think you really care or want to hear such a depressing thing.
But thanks for thinking I'm strong, I'm not, but thanks.
And yeah I look forward to "seeing you" again soon, and hearing some hyper cool fact about England or a caving video, also England is more interesting than I ever thought, I have some relatives in the south of England and I'm going to visit them soon, I'll make sure to enjoy my stay as much as possible.

Great video, thank you. Gas lamp of a similar type can still be seen in Malvern, Worcestershire, where they were the inspiration for C S Lewis to place the lantern in Narnia in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. I don't think they were powered by f*rts though, that must just be a Sheffield thing.
