careful guys, some sandpaper uses synthetic sapphire for it's abrasive. As such it will not scratch a diamond but will scratch most any other stone (even emeralds and rubies)
It’s not really synthetic, just an impure form of sapphire, Aluminum Oxide.

I remember one time we were all drinking at this Irish Pub and we were talking about the hardness scale so to give a real-life example, I took my Movado watch (which has a sapphire front face crystal) and started rubbing it back and forth directly on the bricks inside the building. I remember hearing my friends gasp and saying, "Oh my god! You're going to scratch up your watch!"
I rubbed it back and forth for a good 10-20 seconds and then when I stopped, I showed them the front face and there wasn't one small scratch anywhere on the sapphire crystal. It was completely shiny with no imperfections.
Then one of my friends asked if she could take her diamond ring and rub it across the face and I said, "no." LOL

the fake is the cloudy sratched up thing. ive done this since i was a kid. usually if someone asks me i just ask if they care about the piece. if they say no ill just scrape it across the concrete. and then tell them to toss it. ive found a total of 1 diamond to be real and it was an earring i found that was run over by cars.
