Yes. That's quite some history. In 1991, the Kaserne where I was earlier stationed, Wiley (1/81 - Pershing), was shut down as well. There was no need for any further expense when the Cold War ended.
Had my first German Beer in Butzbach on the way from the Bahnhof to the Kaserne and smoked hash for the first time while there and was released on a European Discharge there. Great pizza there too
Not too far from Friedberg, Bad Nauheim and Giessen Germany. The drawdown really did hurt Germany and it’s economic status. Too bad that type of duty isn’t still ongoing. It was the one place where you felt good most of the time about life. Those were the days of soldiers ETS’ing in Germany and making it their home country. Many of my Army friends have been there well over 30 years as citizens. Learning the language is fairly easy too. Once you have that learned then blending in with the culture is easy. At least it was back in the 80s and 90s.

I was station at the rock ...they had a auto place their to fix your car which I use...I was their in the early 70's

Completed PLDC here in 1990. Very nice little kaserne. It’s a shame to see things change so much, but c’est la vie.
