It is criminal to spend anything on fireworks when people are homeless and hungry. But all over the world they waste money on New Year's Eve fireworks, sadly. It does look spectacular in Sydney, though. And when they do the "waterfall" from the bridge, it is so beautiful. I'm also in Australia. Happy New Year! They did that waterfall effect for the first time in the year 2000, and when they finished they left the word "Eternity" burning on the bridge. It was a reference to a man who used to write the word all over Sydney. He was a Christian and didn't feel he could do much for God, but by writing that word everywhere he hoped to remind people that there is more beyond this world. It was very fitting for the turn of the year, decade, century, and millenium.

City of Sydney executive producer Stephen Gilby said the show is expected to cost $6.3 million to put on and will bring in more than $280 million to the local economy. Although, thankfully homelessness is on the decrease in NSW, a lot needs to be improved upon to make that number absolute 0. I do however disagree with you. Spending money on a celebration that ultimately makes money for the state isn't the area where you can simply just cut and donate. Not only would it be political suᴉcᴉde, but an extremely poor financial decision.

People often complain about the money being spent on the show but fail to see the benefits. Sydney has a huge reputation for NYE, and people come from all over the world to see it. The $280mil it brings into NSW after spending only $6.3mil is an amazing investment. Rather than whining we should be grateful we have such an awesome event in Sydney. Don't take it for granted. Go to it and enjoy it, beats watching a ball drop

It costs less than 1 dollar per NSW taxpayer, and they earn all that money back through increased tourism.

@@xymonau2468 they did the waterfall for the first time in 1986 celebrating 75 years of the Australian navy. They did the waterfall for the bicentennial and throughout the 90's on nye. Costs 6mil but brings $280mil into NSW and helps businesses. The cost is well worth it. Homelessness is a separate issue

It isn't about that cause from all the tourism the fireworks attract they make a huge profit the problem lies the profit isn't being put in the right areas by the government
