I love that Odysseus waited for so long to call for Athena, they push each other away at the end of the cyclops saga, the Odysseus' men are killed by Poseidon, turned into pig by Circe, haunt him in the Underworld, Rebel, stab, and "betray" him leading Ody to sacrifice them, without mentioning Athena at all! But we Calypso flirts with him as he's having a panic attack, that is when he asks for the help of Athena.

that is a fantastic theory never would've thought of that, however since this is based of the Odyssey I must put in some references. Telemachus goes to look for Odysseus around this age in Sparta and Pylos. When he returns he finds his father is already home. Might be this but your theory might make more sense, especially in a musical
I like to think this is Telemachus seeing the suitor infront the statue of a monster, and putting the dots together like "if i fight and beat this man, will you be proud of me?" I like your idea better tho

His devotion to his family, it's not even about his kingdom anymore it's about his wife and son. Ody needs peace and paradise and any other male would have been in paradise in that situation but to our boy ody it's torture.

Does Athena’s “I could sleep at night…” in “We’ll Be Fine” remind anyone else of Odysseus’s “What’s a title that a goddess could lend if I’ll never sleep at night?” It was the first thing I thought of as I heard the lyric, but I’ve never seen anyone else make the connection. They’re kinda like reverses. Odysseus loses his sleep under Athena’s control and mentorship, but Athena lost her sleep because she left Odysseus.
My favorite part is the crescendo before yelling out for Athena when he's on the ledge and you can hear all the voices of the dead around him. It just rips me apart.

In fact, she used magic on him to force him to do sexual acts with her against his will. Something that drove Odysseus to the brink of suicide. She's not a good character or a sympathetic one. Which why, I assume, that they decided to add such a curse on those novels. To make her a sympathetic character, instead of the monster that she really was.

@@SLauch I saw someone else say that the Gods Zeus picked were Gods who had reason to dislike Odysseus (because his actions were insults to their "elements"), but also hadn't ever been directly involved with Odysseus. Meaning any dislike they had for him would be because of the things he had done to others, and not because he did something wrong to them personally. So therefore giving Athena a fair chance, but also not too fair. He was probably intentionally a little lenient because Athena is still considered his favorite child. Although Zeus is still prideful as fuck, so that's probably why he didn't take too kindly to Athena beating his game, despite him (seemingly) deliberately making it a little easier by not including any Gods that would seriously hate Odysseus.
@@nightblade68 nah i dont think so, he was opposed to all achaeans during the trojan war, not just odysseus. and the one i think he had the most personal grudge with was achilles since he killed his children. also, outside of the war, apollo should be more neutral towards odysseus. maybe even favorable since it was odysseus who came to his temple bearing hecatombs and prayed to him on the behalf of all achaeans so that apollo would stop killing them with the plague. also because odysseus is an archer and apollo is a patron of all bow wielding warriors. as evident by the fact that even odysseus himself dare invoke apollo's name when he was faced with the suitors. if apollo was really angry at him, i doubt he would do that.

I've listened to love in paradise so many times and just now realized that what triggers ody to panic and call athena are the phrases calypso uses to try and placate him/talk him back from the ledge. "I'll stay inside your heart" thats what his mom said to him in the underworld. "Stay in my open arms" is one of the last things Polites and Ody talked about before Polites' death. Wow. Poor Odysseus. 😭😭😭

"I'll stay inside your heart" thats what his mom said to him in the underworld. "Stay in my open arms" is one of the last things Polites and Ody talked about before Polites' death. Wow.
