    It's so amazing to see the good biking infrastructure in the whole country, not only in the big cities. Thanks for this content.

      I feel like in the Netherlands the smaller towns and cities are a lot better in terms of cycling infrastructure than the largest metropolises. Correct me on that, Netherlanders, but it seems that in Amsterdam the infrastructure is just "OK" by dutch standards and in Rotterdam/the Hague it's even worse than that

    • @Koen030NL
      @Koen030NL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@smb6995 It is just a lot more challenging to make a good flow of traffic in those city's. In Rotterdam the very "pro car" mindset of the 50's is still very visible. 4 lanes of cars with out any possibility for cyclists to cross the street is still very common. This street design causes people to cycle against the stream of traffic, my biggest annoyance when i lived there.

    In the 1990's, i've ridden that route many times. It doesn't look like it has improved that much, and with bottlenecks like the railbridge, it really doesn't deserve the 'fast route' designation. It's just a cycle path, not even up to modern standards of normal bike paths.
    I love the cycling garage at Deventer rail station though! That's certainly an improvement!

    Nice. I like the comment at the end that "naturally the station of Deventer has a beautiful underground parking garage." I think only in the Netherlands would that sort of infrastructure be "naturally". Over here in the UK it would be "amazingly" or "surprisingly". :-)

      I can attest that the Netherlands state-of-the-art is intuitive and appealing, Mark's not bragging here. Up and down the Low Country, there are few examples of poor public architecture.

      Haha yeah, I definitely felt my heart sink at that point. In the US it would be "astonishingly" as well lol. I'm just happy when I don't feel TOO unsafe riding around :-) I'm working on my home town though, the future is not yet written!

    2:46 😊 as a citizen of Deventer, this view always gives me the feeling of coming back home again.
    I wonder if the bike lane will be upgraded in the near future. In the city of Zutphen (about 20KM from Deventer) they upgraded the bike lane section of the bridge a few years ago while undergoing large maintenance, making much more space for cyclists. It would be great if they managed to do that with this section too.

      I left Deventer in 2016, still miss it every day. The view from the bridge and the park bring bak so many good memories.

    Nice to see that Apeldoorn is looking at improving it's cycling infrastructure. As someone who grew up there and koved to Utrecht a number of years ago i only realised how much Apeldoorn still has to improve when i started cycling daily in Utrecht. There are still so many places with bicycle gutters on busy streets or unneasecary conflict points with motor traffic, on top of the many missing links, both in the city itself and the regional network.
    But here's to hoping for improvement! The cycle route to deventer seems like low hanging fruit for a good cycle-highway and the city seems to want to better connect cycle routes trough and via the city centre and station.

      The fact that it also involves a lot of tax money. But in many countries this lack is often a cause of the poor infrastructure.....

      @smb6995 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lowiebovens. I often see poorer countries even here in Europe waste enormous amounts of money on inefficient bad car infrastructure. I understand that Netherlanders build all of this cycling infrastructure to make their country safe and comfortable to live in, local politicians read public's message and do what they are requested to do, but it would be really great for you to export more of the know-how, it's sad you can't export your political will 🙃

      it's my commute and I feel it's not really that great, compared to other bicycle highways. I always somewhat envious when I see what's built around other Dutch cities. The paths are quite narrow so especially in the morning when a lot of school children occupy the paths it's hard to maintain some speed

    If you live in the US, Australia or other less bicycle friendly country send a bicycling video to your local transportation planner or local elected official. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Older adults and children should be able to ride a bicycle safely to work, school or for fun.
