      I agree. Thank you, algorithms. I saw the one on Tokkie and now here I am. You know a podcast is good when you will listen to people you've never heard of...talk about people/situations you've never heard of...and be thoroughly entertained. And Josh has such an honest, gentle way about him. He knows how to ask the right questions and let them share the information without constantly interrupting. And he showed so much compassion for Tokkie/Gabriel. I'm telling everyone about this channel.

    Listening to this from Australia . This lady must wake up she is dealing with a psychopath . This man has got to her like he did with his victims .
    Yet she still has feelings for him proves to me she is in deep trouble without her knowing it . Just like an alcoholic never admitting he has a drinking problem.
    He now has control over her mind from prison. A very dangerous mental state to be in . Be careful he is going to bring u down .

    Large lesson from this story: Cults exploit vulnerable people and what we need as a nation is to focus on mental health and community building.

    • @compulsiverambler1352
      @compulsiverambler1352 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They mostly exploit wealthy people and/or healthy high-functioning people capable of working hard for them or giving them most of their earnings, like the members of this cult were; they don't want any kind of ill or disabled people with expensive health, debt, addiction or other money-draining needs, unless they have a lot of savings and can still give them or leave them a tonne of money. It is a myth that cult members have worse mental health or lower intelligence than average when they FIRST get into the cult. The only vulnerability that has any correlation with joining a cult is being young and newly away from home. Most ways of being a "vulnerable person", such as homelessness or mental illness, protect you against being targeted by a cult, cos they believe you would be a burden.

    What about the terror and fear that the victims went through as they realised they were going to die? Then the pain? Why does this not come up in this conversation? Am I the only one feeling that basic empathy for the victims is missing (I'm about two thirds of the way through), and a total lack of humanity?

    • @yanodgh2656
      @yanodgh2656 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      You are not the only one, this woman is sick, she could care less about the victims, she is too fascinated with the murderers, she even went as far as to date the one she clearly had no relationship with, just to hear him tell his sick stories and you can see she loved all the stories he and his friends had to tell, she could care less about the victims side and the trauma they left behind.

      She did say that she and another journalist split the story, one focused on the criminals, and the other focused on the victims. So her point of view is, in that respect, one sided, yes. It's a very unique story to listen to, because it shows that humanity, being a human being, is complex and complicated.

    As a South African who moved abroad 18 years ago I sometimes sit and reflect on SA's relationship with christianity. Now that I have the position of looking at it from the outside I would say that SA has such a convoluted relationship with religion. So many want to do good by God but get so caught up and enamoured by so called prophets or even just church ministers (which ends up breeding more and more hate and divisiveness) that they end up losing the true meaning of religion (that of love, respect and acceptance). Perhaps this is because they need something to hold on to, the greater good, when faced with so many challenges in the country. I'm not sure if SA is still as conservative as it used to be, I hope not.

    • @chillyman7340
      @chillyman7340 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is so true, left the church years ago in my late teens cause the stuff Christians were doing raised way to many eyebrows for me and these people believing in prophets and all sorts of weird stuff, hope life has been better wherever you moved to, lol I want to leave to.

    • @panchovan617
      @panchovan617 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also left 7 years ago, but go there once a year. My family is not very religious or conservative, and at least in the cities, people seem a bit more open-minded. But there is still this underlying conservatism rooted in some fundamentalist Christianity that keeps popping up. And it is not limited to a certain race group. It is across the board.

    Everyday as I drive past Key West Mall, Netcare Hopsital near the flat that Cecilia used to rent and also its the same place and possibly room that my friend also occupied for two years, I am so shocked at the stories these walls experienced. I withdrew from the same ABSA atm's they withdrew the monies from, diven and lived in Sivewright street where one of the bodies were found inside the car. Its almost as if I could see everything when I passed these places after I watched the documentary. Its a scary but also eye opening experiece that such a calm peaceful appearing old town has experienced such horrors. Aside from all these bad stories though, its really a good quiet place to live in.

    This was actually one of the best true crime podcasts I've listened to in a while.
    I come from a conservative Christian background and I have always been fascinated by how quick people are to just believe whatever a religious leader says and justify even the most horrendous things in the name of religion.
    The way the human mind is able to rationalise things over time is fascinating.
    I really do pray for Mariska's safety and protection though. Le Roux was an abused and manipulated child who didn't deserve what happened to him. But South African prisons are the OPPOSITE of rehabilitation centers. Justice is being served, and I really hope he was joking about the stalking thing.
    Great podcast.
    I would love to see an interview like this with Dr Nandipha

    This woman is sick! Listening to her is really disturbing! Listen to her, she asks the guy in front of her, why is he in prison and she laughs and say like dude why did you say that or do that, you would never have been caught, you can see she is fascinated about murders and that is what attracted her to him, the fact that he is a murderer and willing to speak so that she can listen to the fascinating stories that he has to tell and she evens admits to it, listen to her even saying she feel like she had so much power with them, because she could tell them who and who not to speak to and what not to say, you can see she don't care about the victims, but more of the killers instead, they fascinate her, it's a shame that you get people like her and reading thru the comments you can see alot of people looking up to her, it just shows how fucked up our society is!

    Anonymous contacted me in 2013 to have a meeting regarding the 4 first murders. I contacted the investigating officer, and we had a meeting with anonymous, we recorded the meeting on audio and video. She knew exactly who the murderer's were and where they hid the weapons. They discussed everything in front of her - anonymous was afraid that she would be next. (Cecilia and them had a hit-list of people they still wanted to kill.) Nothing came of the investigation. In 2015 the killing spree continued, and I waited in anticipation for the killers to be caught, but 7 more people died, just to find out that they were all caught in the end...

    The biggest thing I would catagorically disagree with. is that victims get all the attention in the media. All these stories are almost always based around the killer and the victims are just supporting cast it feels like. We all know the killer names, but the victims so rarely are remembered or the first people associtated with the cases when they are brough up. This was a great interview, but she's defintly got rose coloured glasses on.
