However, they look like fiends in a world where fiendish invaders can and do commit heinous atrocities when they find some time to get away from their blood war. Plus they're meant to be uncommon, so most NPCs (especially in far flung rural areas) could probably be assumed to have never actually interacted with one, and thus haven't been able to work past their irrational fears. Even if its naive, its not necessarily unreasonable. 'Course, you could always build a world where they're widely known and treated like any other race, I think the PHB stuff is specifically relevent for official WotC adventures.
As for the origin, while its unfortunately not in the PHB, Xanathar's has a table for tiefling heritage that includes hot, steamy devil on human action if that's what you're looking for.

I feel like a lot of people ignore most of the flavor text for tieflings in the handbook and go wild with their designs. The most you need is that their bloodlines come from fiends and that they can have a lot of variation. Just open a monster manual or volo's guide and look through the fiends. Find one you think is cool? Make a tiefling based on it. A tiefling character I'm fond of, Panic Grimtongue from The Unexpectsbles campaign, is based on a barbed devil and has little spikes on his chin as a sort of beard, as well as the ability to cover himself in spines to damage an enemy he has on his grip.

Tiefling popularity started with Planescape. Out in the planes, Tieflings were more plentiful, and in general, weren't as hated as they are on the primes. Not sure what you're talking about wth Eve and the apple, unless you mean the ritual that Asmodeus performed to become a god. That explains the current look of tieflings, but not their origin. Their origin was always because someone's grandparents got their cheeks clapped by a fiend (half fiends are cambions).
They also only appear the way they do in 5e because of the stuff that happened with Asmodeus. Ignore that, and your Tiefling can look however you want. Again, Planescape had the best options for this. In the Planewalker's Handbook, they had tables for Tiefling appearance and powers. Since the fiends are so varied, it only makes sense that the tieflings would be equally as varied.

3.5 tieflings, and Pathfinder tieflings especially, are SO cool and flavorful tbh. 5e (actually 4e) just kneecapped so much of the creativity with them, by doing some weirdness where Asmodeus basically became their patron, which is why all of them are devil-based now. (Hence the charisma boon, since devils have a force of presence.)
Before it was just basically anyone with evil outsider blood somewhere in their history (not necessarily fiends, though they were the most common), and it could manifest at random, sorta like draconic sourcery. My favorite character in Pathfinder so far was a rakshasa tiefling. She was supposed to be born a true rakshasa (as they reproduce via a human and a rakshasa), but something on her human parent's side caused her to not fully adopt all the traits and made her a bit 'defective' as a rakshasa, in their eyes. (Which was funny when she and the party kicked her siblings' asses later.)
Pathfinder 2 also allows tiefling to be applied to literally any other ancestry, so you can have a tiefling orc or a tiefling halfling.
The idea of it being a boon granted by a patron is also super fitting.

Pathfinder has the best depiction of tieflings yet because they are diverse which mirrors the immense plurality of outsiders that exists and they also take great strides in accurately depicting how alien they are which makes sense given that they are literally beings borne from a union with a creature from a different plane. You wouldn't want to encounter a qlippoth in fear of becoming a mother to a motherless.

Generally, it's a fairly fragile trust so players need to be careful not to be caught doing crimes or else the trust may be undone. there are also plot points I can mix in based on this like needing something confirming your good-will (such as a letter from a notable ally) to see important people among other factors.

Whether it's through a pact or breeding, it's still not the descendant's fault either way. They can't help it, and it still makes sense for npc's not to trust them, when every time a devil is involved in something, trouble always occurs, so they assume Tieflings are in league with them. Even so, tieflings are still not hated as much as Orcs or Drow. A bartender will be cautious around a tiefling, looking around to make sure they don't start a fight or steal something, maybe even carry an amulet for protection, but when an orc or drow shows up, they will say "Get the fuck out of here, you abomination!" Orcs and drow are kind of universally hated because they seem to hate everything else, with the rare exception that an orc or drow baby was raised around people that aren't douche-bags. Half Orcs are a little more accepted than Tieflings, but people are still cautious around them. I just have my party go to places where people are more accepting of Tieflings, because they too know prejudice and/or have seen good Tieflings and know there are good and bad ones out there. I would agree that they could have dexterity because of their tails, but really, they kind of need high charisma. Otherwise they will be even more despised.

So I started playing D&D 2.5 years ago for the first time with 5e. I feel like I took a different perspective when reading about Tieflings in the book and it actually made me want to play them more, making them my favorite race in terms of lore. I am very much aware of their origin prior to 5e and while I think that was interesting, I kind of like the new one more (and I can relate to it as a gay Latino male).
Firstly, I know it was likely an exaggeration, but the book does not say they all become thieves and slumlords. It says that the negative treatment and negative expectations other races have towards them get so bad to the point that they might as well fit those negative stereotypes and benefit from it if they will be treated that way regardless. On the other hand, it states that many Tieflings go in the opposite direction and overcompensate by trying to be super good and nice so that others may like them. This is a very similar plight that many minorities that have negative stereotypes about them in real life face. To me, it is fascinating that there is that dichotomy and plays into them often falling on the chaotic spectrum, whether that be good, neutral, or evil.
Secondly, just like in the case of racial or sexual minorities not choosing to be born looking or being who they are, the new origin does the same with Tieflings. They did not choose to have the looks of fiends/devils, yet people treat them terribly anyway. It makes for an interesting backstory when you grow up like that (or in the case of myself, again, I can strongly relate to it) and affects how your character is. Combined with my previous paragraph, are they a hero simply because they are a people pleaser that wants to elevate their race beyond being "devil spawn"? Do they pretend to be good but end up stealing from everyone they meet just to get revenge on how they were treated? Or do they ignore all of that end try to be above it, accepting who they are and not caring if others like them?
I guess what I am saying is that to me, despite being one of the most fantastical races in the game, they are one of the most realistic in execution and background. Also, the charisma comes from the devils having strong allure. Plus, many, but not all, people who go through discrimination their entire lives have a strong sense of self, kind of like the Tiefling in the last sentence of the last paragraph which can be charismatic.
It is always cool to see other people's thoughts on it, of course, so thank you for the video.

I like the idea that Tieflings are a curse that a Devil can place upon a bloodline, for various reasons. This also goes with the idea that Tieflings "always breed true," meaning they can reproduce with any other humanoid race, and the offspring is always a Tiefling. It's not genetics; it's a magic transformation that gets passed down from generation to generation. My Tiefling's backstory is that her grandfather was a Warlock of Levistus, and part of his pact would be that the next child born of his lineage would be a Tiefling.
We're all very aware that Tieflings are hot as fuck. However, this can play into the racism against them, as fetishization is another form of oppression. In the fictional setting, people who wanna bone Tieflings are like people who are into race play in real life. It's creepy and racist and no Tiefling will appreciate you for it.

A good example of this could be Twi'lek species in Star Wars, on how half the species is enslaved not because they fear or hate them, but because they want them as a propiety/product/exotic piece of, something. After all, they have contact with devils, they may be straight up a fetish thing to some people, they have some powerful skills and in general, you may want to use them in your favor, and this happens even more if they are rare, which they are.
I'm glad that my "Tieflings in my world won't be hated, but still be treated like crap because of their usefulness and exotic existence" idea doesn't sound so out of place outside my head.

Many don't like them and that's precisely why Tieflings have high charisma. They need to it to charm people and help get them around so that they won't get treated as badly. I do think it slows things down when an npc has to comment them, so I have it to where Tieflings are in smaller areas or places that are more accepting of Tieflings. I don't mind so much if it is a pact kind of thing as opposed to humans having sex with devils. Tieflings had some devil blood, but weren't half breeds, like Cambions. I guess they changed it because they felt there were too many half breed races made due to sex, like with half elves, half orcs, genasi, ect. Doesn't really matter much in the end anyway, because in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, which is what you were using, it uses the bloodline of the other devils. So instead of it being passed down through sex, the pacts basically infused the essence of those devils into their bloodline. Whether it's through breeding or an ancient pact, it's still not the descendant's fault. Plus of course people will be wary of them because they know devils themselves cannot be trusted, so people are going to discriminate against them. You can have a good drow or undead character, but good luck trying to go to a tavern or something, because people will assume your drow worships evil gods or if you're undead, a necromancer must have brought you back to cause trouble.
If you think about it, I think it makes sense for the whole pact thing and cursing their children makes sense. Don't devils want to increase their influence? What better way than to do it with pacts? If it was the result of an ancient sin, and someone didn't read the fine print of a contact saying "Oh by the way, all your children are now cursed, too." That would be something a devil would do, because they want to increase their influence and spread their bloodline. And also, because they know that devils aren't to be trusted, they are aware that people would reject them, which is why many tieflings turn to crime. Just another way to spread their evil around, so I guess that's why they changed it.

People don't like Tieflings because they have demonic or infernal blood (or worse). Depending on type, they likely kill their mother during childbirth, are regularly drawn to evil due to the corruption in their blood, and they look like monsters. Hot monsters, but monsters none the less. The book's intro even mentions the draw of evil and how badly the Tiefling has to fight it to be a good person. Sometimes it is a self fulfilling prophecy. They are treated terribly, frequently abandoned at birth because of the shame of giving birth to a literal demon spawn (seriously, at best, the suspicion of infidelity will never truly go away, at worst the village will kill the parents and the child for treating with demons), and rarely have access to good jobs. In short, the hatred of them is realistic, even if they are not all bad guys. Considering the hatred people in our world get into over skin color alone, if we had literal demon children being born...

Because I miss read the rules and thought Tiefling’s were any infernal not just Devils... so I let their parent be a Shadow Demon. It’s been pretty fun because they still have base tiefling powers but skinned for shadow magic and that’s been really fun in our campaign and led to the incredible bit where they can become one with shadows (basically going invisible in darkness) and it’s been really interesting story and game wise because whole combats will happen with none of the party being able to find em. What I’m saying is, tieflings can be anything, and that anything is fun.

Okay, just so you have a chance of getting it:
Deus Vult is LITERALLY a thing in D&D.
As in. Your God just LITERALLY TOLD YOU TO DO SOMETHING.
Also, Religious Orders would actually be MORE likely to be accepting of Tieflings. The Tiefling got good Charisma, makes for good Deus Vult.
ALSO, the ones who go "Deus Vult" in D&D ARE THE DEVILS!
THE DEVILS FIGHT DEMONS! The entire existence of Hell is fighting darkness with FIRE AND FURY. (Or so the PR says, reality is more... complicated)
      th-cam.com/video/HM2QkgcGqT8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Jorphdan
People never understand what Gods being real actually means in D&D. There ARE NO PURITANS in the sense of hour world because a PURITAN OF SUNE WOULD BE CALLED A HARLOT OR WITCH BY THEM! (sune being one of the mest popular divine beings in the Forgotten Realms for example)
Just look at Zariel. Zariel used to be an Angel. She was sent to OBSERVE the Devils doing Jihad. But she had to all fire and brimstone on them. Turns out they are immune and so now she is one of them. Again, Devils and Angels actually share the side of Law.
There is not a SINGLE fanatical "Good" Deity that would acctually try to go "Deus Vult" on the Devils because they keep the Demons at bay. Also, the Devils would probably curbstomp the Angels.
Unless you don´t use standard alignment and like most noob players and DMs don´t propperly distinguish between Devils and Demons.
In which case, you do you but you are missing out.

In my games, I just go with the tieflings *original* origin, coming from the AD&D Planescape setting. Which is to say, a mix of mortal and extra-planar blood. ANY extra-planar blood. So even a celestial/human cross breed was considered a tiefling. Aside from certain physical traits, behavioral tendencies, and the rare spell-like ability (provided your DM liked you, of course) they were essentially normal player races. The whole concept was really just meant to add further color to an already amazingly bizarre setting.

When I run tieflings, or really any plane touched character, I make their designs abstract and strange. Sometimes, this comes out as animalistic qualities. Tieflings usually resemble certain fiends but often times just end up hauntingly beautiful, like a handsome man who happens to be thin as a pole and 8 feet tall with long arms.
Aasimar are the reverse. They may still be creepy, but their appearance is typically more regal and lighter, like having rings with eyes on them behind your head. To me, plane touched are the paradox that occurs when two different worlds - each with their own laws of nature and physics - clash and make a being that tries its best to fulfill both.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't a tiefling (their old origin) similar to a cambion in terms of demonic blood? Cambions are also in DND, too. I had heard that a cambion is a straight half human/half demon or devil but a Tiefling is just a being with some demonic blood and their demon ancestors are further up the family tree. Sort of like Bretons from Elder Scrolls, who have some elven blood, but are not half elves. Would make sense why the cambions look more monstrous and the Tieflings look more human because they don't have as much demonic blood.
