Don't take all that blame on yourself, you're basically still the kid in this situation! If anyone needs to take blame, at least some of that goes to the adults involved. Have a great time at UCF, you can for sure get a great education and have a fantastic college experience at most schools.

I look at these videos because I have a daughter in high school and one that is already in college. And what I am about to say is not about me, it’s about you. I am a high school dropout who went back to community college, got a degree, went to medical school and I’m now an alumnus of the University of Chicago and Harvard. When I was applying to college, I was in eligible to attend a university based on my background. I was happy to enroll in a community college.
UCF is the most popular school in Florida. It is definitely an up and comer. But more importantly, elite education myth is really just that. A myth. Having a fancy degree doesn’t guarantee you anything. Having a degree from a “lesser” university does not bar you from anything. You can be successful from anywhere. This is really dependent on you. Some of the wealthiest, most successful people I know do not have fancy educations. They work hard. This is a lifelong pursuit.
College is about learning, but more importantly, it’s about transitioning from childhood into adulthood and learning to become a citizen of the world. Enjoy the ride

Thank you so much for this, you are so inspiring!! I totally agree that you have control over your path, it isn't dictated by the school that you attend.

Your story was almost parallel to mine, and watching this video in comparison to all the others where people get into their top dream schools really helped my imposter syndrome. I've recently committed to my safety, and since then it really has just made me feel so free. Can't wait for these next 4 years. Good luck to you! :D

Good luck to you as well! Yes I agree, it is refreshing to hear about someone who didn't get into all of the top schools because that's not realistic for 99% of people who apply to colleges.

congrats on committing! as someone who went through a very similar experience as you back in 2019 with school decisions, i ultimately chose to go to my "safety" (really more target now looking back) state school and i never regretted it. i met amazing friends and got the best experiences that prepared me for my future. i'm now heading to my dream ivy league for grad school this fall (and they rejected me for undergrad haha) and it's a new chapter. but i'm really glad for you and you're going to have a great undergrad experience!

Thank you for the lovely video: not only was it informative (as I expected), but also very sincere and emotional.
Living in Europe, my knowledge of the university admission system was quite vague, based on movies and TV shows that, of course, provide a "dramatized" view of things, making it impossible to understand how reliable they are. It is evident that it is an important step in the life of an American student, but it is difficult to grasp just how much.
That's why, when I saw that you had posted this video a month ago, I made a mental note to watch it, knowing that it would provide me with useful clarification. And it did! Now I have a great understanding of the sheer stress that these application attempts cause in students, which, ultimately, was what I was truly interested in, even without realizing it.
I was surprised by the lack of "transparency" from universities. I would have expected that by providing academic results, extracurricular activities, and perhaps family income data, they would immediately give you the probability of being accepted. For example, if Dartmouth had informed you right away that you only had a 10% chance of being admitted, you probably would have taken action earlier with other applications.
Your choice to enroll at UCF seems definitely better than the other options (online courses or waiting a year to reapply). I believe that only by immersing yourself in student life, interacting with other students, will you truly understand the educational path you should take.
Regarding the lesson that can be learned from your experience, from my perspective (as an outsider with very limited knowledge of the American system), it seems that you were taken aback by being one of the big fish in the pond of your school, only to be considered an average fish in the sea of US universities. Let's be clear: this says nothing about your potential. Perhaps you had only dedicated a fraction of your energy to your school. Now you know that to be competitive at a national level, you have to give even more. It's something you would have eventually realized anyway, and considering how logical and rational you are, I'm sure you'll organize yourself to perform at your best. Once you have set your goal, you will manage your strengths and abilities to achieve it.
It may sound cliché, but I believe that Dartmouth has lost more by not accepting you!
Good luck with your continued studies, and I hope you'll find the time to keep us updated with your progress!

stumbled across this… first off, great video and great perspective on all of this! Secondly, although I commend your excitement for UCF (go knights), I think you’d be a terrific transfer candidate. I was admitted to several ivies last year as a transfer from a community college and think you could totally have a similar path

Thank you for sharing your experience! I would definitely consider transferring if I'm unhappy at UCF! I'm looking forward to it now though! 😊

Don’t ever do anything because of your family. I have done a lot despite my family (dad’s) opinion. A gap year to think if college is for you is better.

Listen, I'm not like others, and I'll not say "Congratulations, UCF is a great school, wish you best" and blah, blah, blah... It's obviously not, but this doesn't mean that I want to humiliate or upset you, I just think that you deserve more. And therefore, I advise you to stay next year, prepare a lot more, and get into your dream school. No matter what anyone says, a prestigious university is a very important factor that can have a big impact on your future. Some may say "Oh, well, you will lose a whole year", but if you don't make the right decision now, you can lose a whole sweet life.

I think UCF is certainly a great school if you apply yourself. I am actually really excited to attend and I think it will be a great fit for me. I never had a dream school throughout my college search and had a hard time picking schools to apply to. Even if I wanted to go to an ivy for undergrad, I would likely still be rejected because of their selectivity. It would not be in my best interest to reapply instead of attending UCF, which I am already committed to and excited about.

Or she can transfer if she doesn’t find the experience she wants ! But attending is not a bad choice

Was your ACT even competitive at Dartmouth? I think it is pretty high to get EA there?
